Declan Rice has always struck me as a nice guy.
Its like he has the ability to walk between the raindrops.
He was one of those earmarked at a very young age as a future professional footballer. He had a great education at the Hammers where Mark Noble mentored him. Nobes might have done too much for him in fact as Rice never really seemed to grab the bull by the horns so to speak. And really step up to the Stevie G, Young Frank Lampard levels which were expected.
England's soporific performances in the Euros obviously drew the attention of many pundits and plenty noticed that Rice was reluctant or even unable to play on the 'half turn'. An accusation made by Graeme Souness among others.
Rafa Van der Vaart may well have joined in on the criticism at the time last summer, when it was justified. I guess Declan shut up those critics tonight though.

Seen him given more freedom at times and he's a top player.

Rice did an excellent job for England under Southgate, Phillips too. Their job was to keep the opposition away from mugs like Maguire, Stones and Walker who couldn't be trusted to defend on their own and ultimately all made costly mistakes for England in big games. Southgate knew this. On the ball, they were clearly told to play the ball sideways to the wings. Every single pass map under Southgate was the 'u-shaped passmap of death' with nothing going vertical thru the centre. That was what Southgate wanted. Risk-averse, pedestrian paced shíte with Kane not moving to look for the vertical ball.
At a big club players like Rice, Rhodri are capable of so much more but there are other quality players who can do the attacking and they allow them more freedom to do it because they can protect a defence on their own.
Martin O'Neill on Irish TV tonight said that he spoke to Moyes 6 or 7 months ago and he said that Rice wanted to attack more but he was so good at protecting the defence that he reined him in.
These FK stats about 300+ games and no FK goal - when was he the designated shooting FK taker at WHU or England? How many shooting FKs did he take/miss would be a more relevant stat. It is only since he moved to Arsenal that they identified his prowess at dead balls, mainly from wide areas initially and Southgate started using him for those post his Arsenal move.
He'd have been 5th+ choice shooting FK taker for England, prob 3+ at WHU. But it's not just a good thing for Arsenal tonight. It's a big thing for England too. Big weapon in tight KO games if he can half-replicate that for England.

I should think the last thing on the mind of mr Rice last night was how he can replicate his performance for the beknighted England national team.
In fact I should imagine that in a year or so the supporters of the mens national football team of this Sceptic Isle will be looking back with a degree of fondness on the tenure of Lord Gareth of Southgate.
