Going from Dyche to Moyes

Think Moyes is an upgrade, but it's an odd choice for new owners. Surely they should be trying to inject some optimism and some excitement, some novel approach of how they're going to turn it round. Instead they're turning the clock back and going for Mr Safe Pair of Hands.

The OP has history in his loathing of Moyes which came back to make a fool of him for almost all of his career at West Ham.

That was 42 years ago. I doubt the Celtic and Rangers fans are the kind of people who cannot move on from something that happened four decades ago

A quick report from the last time Moyes was in a relegation battle

In July 2017, David Moyes resigned as Sunderland manager less than one year after replacing Sam Allardyce.

The former Manchester United boss failed miserably in his bid to keep the Black Cats in the Premier League.

Sunderland finished bottom of the table with 24 points, having won only six games.

The football was drab and draped in defeat - but the 13 signings Moyes made certainly didn't help his cause.

In retrospect, it's no wonder a second successive relegation followed to League One.

Moyes's transfer business was absolutely horrendous.

Three of the 13 players he signed have been sacked for unprofessional behaviour and eight others have departed too.

Didier Ndong - Lorient, £13.6m
Sunderland's club record signing went AWOL after they relegated from the Championship last season.

Ndong, 24, was sacked on Monday and his career at the top level could be over after Sunderland threatened to take legal action to recoup the midfielder’s value should he join another club.

Papy Djilobodji - Chelsea, £8m
The Senegalese defender was sacked by Sunderland earlier in September after also failing to show up for pre-season training.

Djilobodji only made 24 appearances for the Black Cats, playing a starring role in their horrendous 2016/17 Premier League campaign.

Adnan Januzaj - Manchester United, loan
Big things were expected of the Belgian winger when he joined on a season-long loan deal from Old Trafford.

However, he struggled to make much of an impact at the Wearside club - failing to register a single goal in 25 Premier League appearances - and was sold by Man United at the end of the season.

Paddy McNair - Manchester United, £5m
McNair made a decent start at the Stadium of Light but ruptured his ACL three months after joining.

He was sold to Middlesbrough for £5.5m in 2018.

Donald Love - Manchester United, £1m
One of only two of Moyes's signings still at the club.

Love has struggled to become a first-team regular, making only 11 appearances in the Championship last season.

Steven Pienaar - Everton, free agent
Moyes signed the 34-year-old South African midfielder on a one-year deal after he was released by Everton.

However, the years had caught up with him and he retired from professional football six months after his uninspiring spell at Sunderland.

Jason Denayer - Manchester City, loan
The highly-rated Belgian international was often fielded in midfield instead of his natural position as a defender.

Failed to convince his bosses at Man City and was eventually sold to Lyon in 2018.

Javier Manquillo - Atlético Madrid, loan
The full-back endured a pretty disastrous campaign at Sunderland before completing a permanent transfer to Newcastle.

He made 20 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats, winning just twice.

Victor Anichebe - free agent
The former Everton striker was released at the end of his one year-deal after netting three times in 18 Premier League appearances.

Anichebe joined Beijing Enterprises in June 2017 but is currently a free agent after a disappointing spell in China.

Mika - Boavista, free
The first choice Boavista goalkeeper found himself firmly behind Jordan Pickford and Vito Mannone in the pecking order.

He never played for Sunderland's first team and his contract was terminated in January 2018.

Darron Gibson - Everton, £2.5m
Once a Man United player, Gibson disgraced himself during his time in the north-east.

In March 2018, the 30-year-old midfielder was sacked by Sunderland two weeks after being charged with drink driving.

Bryan Oviedo - Everton, £2m
The Costa Rican full-back suffered with injury problems in his debut season at Sunderland but has been a regular in the first-team in the Championship and now League One.

Incredibly, Oviedo was probably Moyes's best signing. However, the bar is really, really low.

Joleon Lescott - free agent
Terrible signing.

The veteran defender made two Premier League appearances and retired at the end of the 2016/17 season.

Yeah, to be fair Moyes in a relegation battle is probably a downgrade on Dyche really. Wonder if he's got money to spend, though I'd suspect not a great deal.

Can back them at 10/3 to go down which is tempting. Wolves are quite a bit shorter which seems questionable given their turnaround under the new manager, and they seem to have a far better squad. Ipswich look to be able to win the occasional game too.
Possibly the biggest problem might be City joining Southampton and Leicester.

He replaced Manuel Pellegrini, who had left them in 17th in the Premier League table, one point above the relegation zone. Speaking about his return to West Ham, Moyes said, "I think there's only two or three managers with a better Premier League win record. That's what I do, I win. I'm here to get West Ham wins and get them away from the bottom three."

His first game on return resulted in a 4–0 win, against Bournemouth, in the Premier League on 1 January 2020. West Ham finished in 16th place in the Premier League with 39 points, their lowest points tally since 2010–11 when they gained 33 points and finished bottom. Moyes' 19 games in charge produced 20 points, one more than the previous 19 games managed by Manuel Pellegrini.

In the 2020–21 season, Moyes guided West Ham to a record Premier League points total of 65, finishing in sixth place and qualifying for the 2021–22 UEFA Europa League. The team won 19 Premier League games, including nine away, both records for the club. Owing to these strong performances, some West Ham supporters affectionately given the manager the moniker "Moyesiah". In June 2021, Moyes signed a new three-year contract with West Ham.

In the 2021–22 season, Moyes guided West Ham to a top-seven finish and a Europa League semi-final, where they lost 3–1 on aggregate to Eintracht Frankfurt. It was the first time in club history that the club finished in the top seven in back-to-back seasons.

In the 2022–23 season, Moyes led the club to victory in the 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina to finish undefeated in the tournament play, winning 12 games and drawing one. West Ham finished the Premier League season in 14th place, the lowest table position any team winning a European trophy has ever finished.[

In February 2024, with some supporters calling for him to be replaced, Moyes said he had been offered another contract but would wait until the end of the season before deciding if he should sign it. In April 2024, after Moyes had received criticism from some fans for his perceived negative style of play, a spokesperson for West Ham said they would be waiting until the end of the season before deciding on any future contract. On 6 May 2024, West Ham confirmed that Moyes would leave the club at the end of his current contract, at the end of the 2023–24 season.

That was the impression I got from the Everton fans as I was actually at Goodison for his farewell game against West Ham and most of the crowd stayed after the final whistle to thank him.

I'm with you lurka.  Their defence is very poor in the main.  How Branthwaite got into an England squad is anybodies guess.  He can't read a game, he ball watches and more often than not is out of posi. at crucial times. And he's not the only unreliable one in the squad.

The only stat that says they are doing anything better than under Dych is their goals scored.  44% possession at home and outpassed 60/40 at home is no recommendation. Yet they've seemingly turned a corner.

Tactical nous combined with steely determination and charisma, is needed to make a perfect manager. Id suspect Dyche would be falling a little short in at least 2 of those traits. imo.

The 44 percent possession has nothing to do with it, Forest upto 2 weeks ago were averaging below 40 percent for the season possibly 37 percent which was joint lowest in the league and looks where they are!

Dyche wasn't doing too badly before he got the chop. Drew with Arsenal, City, Chelsea, beat Wolves 4-0 lost to Forest home and Bournemouth away. Moyes has had relatively easy fixtures and scored more against poor defensive sides. He'll pick up more wins than Dyche would have tho.

Leicester City settled the possession nonsense once and for all when becoming champions by ten points.

Leicester won the title with just 44.8 per cent of possession - only West Brom and Sunderland saw less of the ball.

No desperation here old son.  I'm a Moyes fan - in case you've forgotten - but can't ignore the bare facts.  If these goals had been scored by these players six weeks ago Moyes would still be unemployed.  Maybe he's got them more relaxed. We'll learn more on Valentine's Day.

His record speaks for itself at West Ham and I hadn't forgotten you are a fan honcho. Dyche of course did a good job in those very difficult circumstances but unfortunately West Ham and Everton fans are not always appreciative of what those two have done at both clubs.

What absolute nonsense and as a West Ham fan maybe I just got fed up fighting relegation each season. Of course those fans who talk about "anti football" are just a noisy minority and had it been left to them a few years ago we would have been in League 1 with Ravel Morrison leading the line! Moyes record at West Ham is the best for a great number of years and results are what you look at. Even in the his last season (with the problem of Steidten interfering) which his critics always jump on in desperation the club finished in the top half.

Results are what I care about not possession stats. Leicester City taught me that when they won the title by 10 points with an average of 40% possession. I was encouraged by what I saw yesterday and will judge at the end of the season and not before.

The cost cutting measures are necessary. They are that bad for FFP. £300m in losses over 3 years, £250m of that was taken by the Glazerss. They got an exemption for covid as their gate receipts hit them a lot more than everyone else. Got another one for the takeover expenses. They won't be getting them in future years. £105m over 3 years is the limit. That's what Everton and Forest got docked points for. The redundancies will save them £35m a year but cost £8m in payoffs this year.

Should just flog as many players to Saudi Arabia as they can, some criminal acquisitions, Hojlund and Zirkzee not worth more than a packet of jelly babies between them yet they paid 130 mil for the pair.

Whoever said Moyes was a good appointment was right. Whoever said it was a risky appointment was also right (at the time). Whoever said Dyche would have kept them up was right. Basically everyone on the thread was right. The bottom 3 have been woeful with awful managers.

In actual fact DM was the least risky appt they could make as he knows the club inside out.
I agree SD would have kept them up but that's on account of the bottom 3 being hopeless. I think SD did a decent job in his time at the club but he was far too negative in home games especially and this is what turned the fans against him. DM has taken the same players and transformed the performances, he has put faith in players like Jake O'Brien who wasn't getting a look in under SD.

So no, basically everyone was not right on this thread, especially mesmerised and porcy (who thought 10/3 was a good price for Everton to be relegated - hope he didn't do his conkers!)

Risky for Moyes

Dyche did a decent job most of his time there. Lampard would have taken them down.

But the last couple of months they never looked like scoring a goal.

Moyes would not have been my choice to fix that but he did.

SD kept them up with 2 points deductions from two different accounting periods in the same season. They were the only club who could have faced points deductions in one season for two different 3 year periods as it turned out because they changed the rules.

Everton would have challenged that if they'd gone down but SD was so good that they were happy to take 2 last season and stay up. It should have been 3 points last season and 3 this season (if they'd appealed) but SD was so good after the initial deduction that it suited Everton to take them both in one season because they were so clear that they could take both.
