Be wary of backing the Gills at odds on tomorrow at home to basement dwellers Newport.
The home side have only one win in fifteen games (away at Bristol Rovers) and incredibly haven't won at Priestfield for FOUR months .
Plenty of draws in that period of course.  They have had two weeks since their last game to get their heads together and for Gareth Ainsworth to hopefully sort things out, but there will certainly be better short priced favourites on the coupon this weekend.

I think the draw for Gills v Newport is overpriced and I've backed it.

I went to Bromley v Crewe tonight -

Bromley are a very ordinary team IMO on the basis of tonight and the last few games and it wouldn't shock me if the lad that they have just sold to Lincoln wasn't the piece that was holding it all together. Crewe gifted them the two goals with some poor defending and without those Bromley lacked any sort of invention or nous to fashion chances of their own. Cheek was pocketed quite easily by the Crewe defence.

It is a slight on the league that they happen to be 6 points clear

that being said, I would be shocked if there isn't 2 if not more good bets against them in the Outright, especially whilst there is still a handful of firms 3 places each way.

Cambridge and Notts County certainly two I have an eye on

Grimsby 66 and Chesterfield 150 but ew is now 1 and 2 only.

This race is still wide open and finding the strong "finisher" will be the bet.

From what I've seen on TV I think Notts have enough firepower to see off Fleetwood but I do worry about some of their inconsistent results. Swindon should also win at home to Barrow.

Over 8,000 there too.

4 of the top 5 won on Saturday and are at last showing some consistency. Swindon leapfrogged flagging Walsall who could only draw.
Swindon and Notts Co play tonight and both should win again. Gillingham have been a bit of a bogey team for Notts in recent times but are so off colour that I don't see them as being much of a threat at the moment.

Gillingham played well tonight, plenty of energy and never gave up. Notts have Goalkeeper Belshaw to thank for their win. Wins also for Swindon and Bristol Rovers who beat Walsall 2-0

Yes Foin, the Gills deserved something tonight.  They had plenty of chances against Bromley as well. Bit worrying that they keep getting off to great starts in August/September (top of the league 3 years running after the first month) but then completely lose their way. Little chance of going up this season now.

Bristol Rovers are now hard to beat, as one would expect under Mr Evans. A team to be on the right side of from now on.

We needed a goal from Salford and it wasn't for want of trying, they met their match in Stanley.

Struggling to see why Walsall are over 2/1 at home to Barnet. Granted they are not in brilliant form but Barnet have only drawn with Shrewsbury and Crewe over the past week and don't look value to me at about 5/4. Walsall were below par against a resurgent Bristol in the week but a Home win still looks the value.

Plenty of  other fixtures have short priced favs this week but as we know its hard to be confident of selections in this league so i'll stay clear of the rest of the games.

India do look formidable for the T20 Dragon but the price is short enough to swerve at this stage. They are just about to bat v USA, could be fireworks !
Pakistan only just scraped a win against the Dutch, not very impressed with them but a wins a win.

Bristol R have got a bit of confidence back Foin with 2 consecutive wins but Chesterfield are hard to beat (only 6 defeats so far)  so yet another draw could be on the cards.

They are the bears indeed Dixie, great game yesterday in testing conditions and Chesterfield were well worth there win but as stated Rovers are a totally different side under Evans.

I'm backing Shrewsbury to beat Barrow tonight, both teams desperate for points to stay out of the bottom 2 but the away side are in freefall, 5 defeats on the spin.

On the outright front,  Bromley show no signs of flagging although they have had their share of good fortune recently. They are now odds on to win the title having been a general 66/1 with the high street bookies ante post. Well done to anyone who had the foresight to back them then !

bromley v notts co is a fascinating game Foin with both teams in great form. bromley unbeaten in 6 and notts co won 6 on the bounce.

however notts co away form v the top 10 teams is not good with only 1 win in 5 games.bromley are unbeaten at home.

the teams drew 2-2 when they last met. its a no bet but i would not be surprised to see goals, btts and possibly a draw or home win.

I'll be going to the Bromley game The Dragon. I agree with you entirely. I think NC will be very difficult to beat. Should be a decent game and atmosphere hopefully.

3 draws for me this week - Barrow v Colchester, Cambridge v Bristol Rovers and Bromley v Notts County.

Then a home win for Tranmere against Crawley.  The hosts have lost their last six games but looked decent in patches against Gills last week and could have snatched a point. Crawley are hit and miss and looked poor in the week, losing at home to Cambridge.

I will also back my local team the Gills away at Crewe. Could be an entertaining game this one and now that Gills have signed a striker who looks like he actually knows where the goal is (Ronan Hale, scored both goals last week on full home debut) then they could still make a late bid for the play offs.

I haven't seen Crewe play since the mid 70s when on a very rainy day the Gills beat them 3-2 in a cracking game, but always remembered by me for a superb own goal by Joe Jacques who was a bit of a cult hero during his 3 year stay at Priestfield. He only scored one in the right end during his Gills career !  Unfortunately died at the very young age of 36 in 1981 from a heart attack having moved back to his native County Durham.

Pretty average game at Crewe by the sounds of it. home teams first shot on target in 64th minute goes in and decides the result.
Gills had more chances it seems but couldn't convert any - same old, same old Maybe Dragon can give us his report if he made the trip.


Top of the table clash was a draw as i predicted but my other draws crashed and burned although Barrow/Col was close with a late home winner.
Tranmere also beating Crawley as expected but the away team were a tad unfortunate, creating more chances than the hosts but like the Gills were not clinical enough.

i decided against it DD and watched the racing instead. looks like i didnt miss much. i had a bet on the draw

Regarding Notts Co, Jatta has been "inactive" for the past 4 games (W2 D1 L1), he scored in all the previous 4. The reason has not been published as far as I know. They will probably cash in before his contract expires in June.
I watched Notts v Shrews on TV and in my opinion, Shrews improved performance is not a flash in the pan. Also noted Newport's determined effort to climb out of the relegation zone.
Gills game looks like "unders" again 1-1 or 1-0 to be optimistic.
L2 is still a betting minefield.

I should have reminded you earlier Dragon, the play is called Our Little Hour and it was on in Salford last weekend.

However if you can attend this weekend it is actually playing tonight and tomorrow in Liverpool 's Hope Street theatre - tickets £17 incl booking fee.

I can well believe what the city is like on a weekend night, it's been about 30 years since i was last there but it was always buzzing of a night time.
Most of the nightspots i frequented have closed now, The Continental, Grafton, Fallows, Bunters and my fav The Cabin on Bold Street which was a great place, a real throwback.

Bromley was the only one of the leading group of 5 to win today. Those teams still have a cushion over 6th placed Crewe.
Shrewsbury's excellent run of results came to an end against Walsall who were themselves badly in need of a result to stay in contention for a playoff place.
At the other end of the table, Harrogate continue to pick up points and are now level pegging with Barrow who lost again today to Gillingham. Both are just one point behind Crawley who are also very much in the danger zone.

I'm on Barnet and Salford. The latter have acquired Macauley Langstaff from Millwall who used to be prolific at this level with Notts Co a couple of years ago. Perhaps he can find his old form in front of goal with his new club?

Bristol Rovers used to play in a stadium about 2 miles from where they are now, which is  the Memorial Ground, "The Mem".. used to be Bristol Rugby ground, the Rugby now play at Ashton Gate, City's ground...hope you're following so far?
Rovers old ground was right next to the M32 (with a dog track as well)...right next to it was a massive gasholder, similar to the one still at The Oval cricket ground ...hence they became known as The Gas
The whole football ground and dog track was sold off in the 90s, IKEA plus others there now, with Rovers supposedly building a new stadium...they played at Bath City for a good few years before moving into the Mem as tenants to Bristol Rugby
Within a couple of years, and some controversy,Rovers owned the Mem and the Rugby club were the tenants ie complete change around.. before the Rugby club moved to Ashton Gate as I said earlier

And, the Dragon, Geoff Twentyman did commentary on Rovers games for local radio for many years

To further add to Reg’s info regarding Eastville being right next to the M32- it wasn’t unheard of for cars to stop on the M32 to watch a bit of the match! (The M32 sat raised high above the stadium making it easy to view).

League 2 looks a nightmare this year. Will just go Salford win. Keep thinking a rank outsider will be in the top 3.... however cannot unearth it.

I'm looking forward to the L2 campaign which should be as topsy turvy as last season. The top game for me will be Barnet V Salford which I will watch with interest. No serious bets until the form settles but I've had a fun bet on Gillingham to beat Walsall. In recent seasons Gills have got off to a great start topping the table for a few weeks before fading away. Walsall were a disappointment last season after a great run the previous year, I hope this season will show an improvement.

I would be careful when backing the Gills Foin, they have a much changed squad and were poor last week when getting hammered 3 nil at home by Luton.

It will be a watching brief from me to see how the new players settle in.

Walsall on the other hand had an excellent away win at Bristol City in the cup last week. It could be a difficult afternoon for the Priestfield faithful again.

Colchester have been solid the last 2 seasons , not far off the play offs and will probably be similar this year.

Like most clubs in the division its been a struggle to recruit well but they have not had a huge turnover of players, however having said that creating chances may be an issue as they have lost some of their pace out wide, Lisbie and Edwards have both left and moved up a division (Reading/Peterboro).

It's often the case that clubs have to sell their best players to survive and look for promising new players.
Promoted Notts Co sold off their strike force of Jatta and Dennis and replaced them at lower cost. Acqua who was on loan to Harrogate last season and Luka Smyth from Finish side VPS.

walsall had the 4th best away form last season with 10 wins and 7 draws. they are on my list to look at for away wins when the season gets going. gills home form last season was not that good with 8 wins in 23 games.


walsall also have a new manager in lee grant and word is he will be more attacking so maybe goals could be looked at.gills also conceded 72 goals last season so if punting id go over 2.5

Well done Dragon on the Walsall bet.

But if ever a score line did not tell the story then this was it.  Gills totally dominated the first 80 minutes from an attacking perspective, the Walsall keeper pulled off some very good stops - Gills 7 shots on target and hit the woodwork twice. I feared what could happen late on and lo and behold Walsall nicked a goal on 81 minutes and Gills then fell apart and conceded two more as they pressed forward.

Worrying times for the Gills as they are struggling to convert chances. The only saving grace is that they at least are creating them.
Gareth Ainsworth appears to now be on borrowed time unless the tide turns, plenty of fans want him gone (not me)
Fleetwood away next week and they won away at Chesterfield today so it ain't going to be easy.

I like Barnet at  Shrewsbury this weekend. Their away record last season was really good securing 40 points with 11 wins and 7 draws and they got off to a good start beating ante post favs Salford. Shrews have poor home form with 14 losses and only 4 wins last season and lost the opening game to last year relegation threatened Tranmere. 9/10 looks a solid bet.

Ive doubled them with Swindon who i think will beat Cheltenham with a broadly similar logic to the above other than Swindon are at home and price of around 10/11.

Colchester registered their first win with an own goal in the 94th minute against Oldham, who probably deserved a point after playing the whole of the second half with just ten men after a sending off in first half stoppage time when they were leading one nil.

The Gills drew 0-0 at Fleetwood, quite a decent game despite no goals. Gills are cursed at the moment as just like last week they hit the woodwork twice and just cannot get the ball in the net . The home side also hit the post but despite having 17 attempts at goal, none of them were on target, quite an achievement

This division really is wide open, AP favourites Salford have lost two out of two after a home defeat to Chesterfield today. It's all a real puzzle

some interesting fixtures in League 2 this weekend with a few surprising prices knocking about.

i am backing BARNET (1.62) again this weekend at home to Cheltenham. Barnet 2/2 so far this season and won their last game 3-1 v ante post faves Salford 3-1. Their home form last season was solid with 10 wins and 6 draws. Cheltenham were very poor on the road last season with 12 losses and 6 draws and already lost their first away game to Swindon 2-1. its bit of a short price but i think Barnet will win.

The other game i like in this division is COLCHESTER at a healthy 7/5. Colu were solid at home last season with the identical home form as Barnet. they beat Oldham 2-1 in their first home game and play Rochdale who are struggling already in the higher league with 2 losses v teams that struggled last season Newport (3-0) and and Crawley (1-2).

I have had 2 singles and a double.

I was surprised that Swindon were 3/1 away at Oldham and Crewe are 11/5 at Port Vale. Crewe won 2/2 PV 1 point in 6. Watching brief on them but i think the prices are incorrect.

Grimsby v Fleetwood looks like unders (1.82) in the Fisherman s derby and Crawley looks like overs v Bristol Rovers (1.93)

sorry forgot to add that SALFORD away at Shrewsbury at Evens looks a bet to be on. Despite their poor start salford shd be too good for shrewsbury who have also lost their first two games

I'm pleased by Barnet's early form as they were my preseason pick to win this league. I think they should win well again although the price is a bit slender. Rochdale's poor results are surprising and I don't see any adverse transfer activity over the summer.

Well both teams managed a goal each at Priestfield - Gills scored one from two shots on target, Northampton had one shot on target and it went in.
So not a thriller (as expected).

Four goals at Grimsby in a 2-2 draw, so unders scuppered there for Dragon, along with Salford losing again and Barnet drawing. But at least Gills obliged for unders and Colchester saw off Rochdale. so probably even stevens on the betting front for Dragon. Foin successfully tipped unders in the Gills game as well.

This league is proving very hard to predict as it was last year. Who would have thought Salford the AP favs would have lost their first three ?

I thought my unders bet was sure to lose after the Northampton equaliser. I watched the Barnet game on TV and thought that Cheltenham were unlucky not to win. They certainly deserved the point and several very good chances went begging. Barnet looked very ordinary and they will need to do better than this if they want to be promoted.
York seem to have adapted well and I was pleased that Colu won with their late goal.
Still only fun-sized bets for me at this stage.

There are 4 odds on favourites, Bristol R., Chesterfield. Northampton and Salford. I have layed them all to small amounts. Not much to inspire confidence as yet.

I wouldn't be confident about backing any of those odds on shots apart from Bristol Rovers and even they have a tough game against Colchester.

Salford have lost 3 out of 3 and even though they are at home against one of the relegation favs in Newport i couldn't go near them at 4/7 or similar.

Northampton have only scored one goal so far and opponents Crawley won away at Rochdale a couple of weeks back after an unlucky last gasp defeat against Crewe. They were second best against Bristol Rovers on Saturday but overall i'm struggling to see why Northampton are so short in the betting for this one. They may well win but have to be swerved  at odds on.

The Gills away at Chesterfield is an interesting match. The home side haven't looked anything special and have lost 2 out of 3 including their only home game to Fleetwood.
Gills have only scored one goal in their first three games but have created chances and have hit the woodwork five times so far. At the odds , Gills at a general 9/2 look worth chancing a shekel or two.

Elsewhere, Cheltenham looked pretty good at Barnet on Saturday as Foin said above. Odds of approx 5/2 at home against York look a tad generous and on value terms alone are tempting.

Salford were seven minutes away from another defeat but managed to turn it round at the death to get their first win of the season. Turning point for them ?

chesterfield and Northampton were unable to land the odds and both drew at home.

Cheltenham a nice 5/2 winner for me

Out of the 12 matches, no less than 7 were draws and the other 5 games were home wins. No away teams victorious at all.

Two lays from 4 guaranteed a small profit. It looked like it was going to be 3 until Salford's two late goals. A good point for Gills away to Chesterfield.
Cheltenham confirmed the good form shown at Barnet as York are no pushover, one to watch.

I'm considering backing Walsall and Cheltenham, the Dragon and agree that most games look difficult this week. Those two I mentioned are odds against and are playing teams which have had a poor start to the season.

A win for Chelters at a nice price (2.8). Walsall should have been the icing on the cake but failed to score.
Barnet lead the table and a good win for York in the week I didn't back them.

Cheltenham are certainly being underestimated by the bookies at the moment, they will cotton on soon.
