Arsenal had a 10-point lead one x'mas but was overtaken by City with at least a game to spare. A reliable keeper is a must eg Shilton under Clough/Taylor at Notts Forest managing a bunch of misfits to the League and European Cup.

Still doesn't explain the phantom 10 pt lead Arsenal had at Xmas over City

Still, where was there 10 points lead over City at Christmas.

When Arsenal lost to Leeds, Man United were already 1 pt ahead with 2 games left, United won both games, so the Leeds result irrelevant.

Did Arsenal not have a 10-point lead at any time whether it was leading up to one x'mas recently, and overtaken by City? I know my memory is not good these days however, whether it was 8-points of 10 points at any time or leading up to x'mas did not hide the fact Arsenal led but unshipped only a short few months later.

I understand it's difficult for any ardent emotional Arsenal fan their team succumbed despite leading by a monumental margin of points just a short few months prior to the end.

Same here, laid them @ 2.84 on the 15th Aug and @ 1.3 top two finish in July. Was intending to lay off after difficult first six matches, but they did better than I expected. Which sort of indicates they haven't been that good since; much more inconsistent compared to last season. On their day look very good; suited to CL I think.

On a different note, its a bit surprising Arsenal are as short as 2.96 to win the EFL cup, with the teams left in. This has to be the main target for Newcastle/Spur/ ManUtd. Arsenal & Liverpool will surely be distracted by PL & CL matches around the semi-final dates?

I see Arsenal as more of a cup team. They may drop points due to draws, but they have a great defence and are hard to beat

Once again lay Arsenal in EFLC as short as 2.6, despite Arteta admitting he will field a weakened team with many 2nd eleven players against Newcastle. In the semi. Newcastle will be full strength and imho this is a low risk bet that should yield a decent profit in a meaningless trophy for Arsenal.

Arsenal's squad looks too shallow to win the league.

Liverpool continued to win without Alisson, Konate, Trent and Jota for extended periods, whereas Arsenal seem to be in crisis whenever they have one or two players out.

If Arsenal were going to win the league, they would have closed the gap on Liverpool when they dropped points against Newcastle and Fulham, but they slipped up themselves.

They'd want to have deals signed with them both pretty quickly or it will affect them. Money shouldn't be the issue either after not spending in the summer. Makes no sense for them to allow it go on this long.

One of the reasons L'pool are in such a healthy financial position is that they don't pay mega wages and especially not for players that could start to trough mid contract..would imagine both have agents very eager to get as much out of the club as possible..and contract length may be a sticking point as well..

the players are clearly plenty enough focused on the football and with two big prizes available (as well as domestic cups) not really a need for the club to get rinsed.

Liverpool turned down 200 million for Salah which looks like a good move
as he's currently best player on the planet and driving liverpools value
higher. But losing 3 players for nowt would massively impact ffp implications
for 3 year cycle. No doubt Madrid would welcome all 3...

Liverpool already pay mega wages to Salah. He ran his contract down to 1 year left the last time and they extended it to 3 years and gave him a 70% rise to about 360k a week. He was 30 at the time. I don't think he's looking for a similar pay rise this time, prob more to do with length than money.

I don't think letting it go on this long improves pool's bargaining position relative to the player. They will both prob receive a better wage offer and longer contract from elsewhere now, maybe more than one, if they haven't already.

If you are Salah/VVD's age the next contract might be your last and biggest one. You get a bad injury before it's signed and you might not get it at all. The player has to think like this at his age. That might affect your performance as well as all the rumours and potential unrest with the fans. Seems an idiotic policy from pool.

At some point very soon they'll have to sign somewhere to avoid the risk of injury costing them big. If there is no deal on the table from pool very soon it could go pear shaped for them one way or the other.

I certainly take your points but Salah is the one of only two players on over 180,000 and VVD is 'only' on 220,000..so they do have a sensible payroll..

They made an exception with Salah's money, he was one of the very top in the world and still is...they probably would again but he is now older and the risk of a downturn in form higher...he seems to have been very highly motivated both on the field and in the gym to get a good deal whether at L'pool or otherwise but if the demands of his agent (wage or contract length)  aren't realistic (who knows ?) then they are right to do business on their terms... I don't see Madrid taking him if he becomes a free agent, not sure Barca can add another massive wage to their current financial situation and nowhere else other than Saudi is a realistic option..

Yeah, to be fair they're probably the best attacker and best centre back in the whole world right now, so paying them top dollar is hardly outrageous business. The thing Liverpool will be thinking about is what these players will look like in 30-36 months' time when they might still be on a similar wage to right now. The club might be looking at diminishing the pay and making it more incentive and playing time based while the players will be fighting against that. To be honest, I'd probably just pay it. They both look after themselves, both have a great record with injuries (apart from getting karate kicked by tiny-armed keepers) and elite players are staying at a high level far later into their careers. I don't see any sign of them waning yet and would gamble that they'd both still be first teamers in a couple of years' time.

Or look at actual replacement cost, and then realise
paying them a fair bit more works out as an actual saving.

Of course getting a fee for them is good for ffp.

There's a new interview with him on Sky where he says that and that he's not even close to agreeing a deal with pool, presumably recorded in the last few days. Reports PSG have offered Salah close to €500k a week for 3 years too. If you are challenging for PL and CL and they are instrumental to that, it's a no brainer to give them 3 years even if you think they'll be at the level for only 2.

If they don't announce signed deals very soon, I reckon it means that either one or both have signed elsewhere and they've agreed to keep it quiet til nearer the end of the season. If one has signed elsewhere and one is staying, they might say nothing as it would only cause speculation about the other. Every time these guys step on the pitch now they are putting the most important contract of their career on the line, if they have an offer from elsewhere on the table. You are asking for them to sign elsewhere if you are pool and allowing that. Reports of agreement in principle with pool too - that doesn't give the player much comfort either and sound like nonsense.

That's the wrong attitude, you're viewing City as they were, not as they are, the whole world can see that they are shot to bits in the middle of the park, that's why practically every side they play have numerous counter attacks on them every game......we've seen it from Arsenal in the last 20...after the equalizer when they were woken up.

We've just battered them 5-1, I think Arteta knows what he's doing, recent results suggest he has the gameplan correct.

Carragher and Haaland telling it how it is...."as soon as the game quickens up and gets intense,City can't cope"..........therefore, sitting behind the ball and letting City have it and playing at their pace was not the way to go......impressive scoreline flattered Arsenal really because it was Haaland's goal that shifted how they were playing....should have been making this an end to end tear up from the word go.

They didn't sit on a 2-1 lead because the whole dynamic of the game changed as soon as Haaland equalized, Arsenal had to come out and go onto the front foot and as soon as they did City were exposed and noticeably fell apart and that's why Arsenal then had numerous counters with big spaces everywhere.

If Arsenal had decided to make it a stamina test (if you like)  from the word go and been brave enough to do it, yes City would have had their moments but ultimately they would get worn down far far earlier than Arsenal.

Anyway, I'm not an Arsenal fan but very much hope that you lot win the league....so good luck

Losing at home to a London team is crazy. The team needs a proper striker - one who can score goals on a regular basis eg Salah or Haaland. Arsenal has just cost me a 4-timer, but won £1 with 'sly' for a 3-team winner.
