Picked him for Golden Ball winner and top scorer before the World Cup, looks better than Nunez who will probably be offloaded at the end of the season, has no composure to go with his pace in front of goal, gets in the right positions though.

Initial fee appears to be a steal. Pool look much more in need of def or mid so I'm surprised they went for him. Maybe it was just to piss EtH off. But this speaks volumes of where both clubs are at present.

Utd more in need of a true CF with Martials's fragility...not so unlikely that Utd turned their attention elsewhere...newspaper chat doesn't always equate to the real world...
in the current transfer market that seems a very decent price to buy him for though..

Young and untested in the Prem so £35m is a gamble.

If another Big club were in for him then PSV would have played one against the other for a week or so.

Doesn't seem much for an attacking player nowadays. Makes me think Diaz and Jota are both out for months rather than weeks and, with Firmino also being out, the need for another attacker was suddenly the biggest issue. Midfielders are back now and while they're ageing it's more a case of getting them in form and keeping them fit. Adding the likes of Elliot, Carvalho and now Bajcetic also helps. Wouldn't be surprised if we got on in in January aswell but not as urgent. For defence we just need to swap Gomez for someone who can properly defend.

Gakpo club position was left wing coming inside. He was never a fit for United where we have Garancho coming through and Sancho trying to get back.

Having said that LvG played him in other positions and that produced goals.

Big difference between playing week in week out in the Prem and playing in the Eredivisie.

If you watch his psv montage on YouTube he looks even better, all different kinds of goals. And seems to have the strong physique needed for the prem, and quite nifty

Hes better off at Pool ho build a team slowly rather than a United who buy a load of players then throw them together and expect miracles

Klopp slowly building a new team to challenge

Nunez will improve as it takes shape as well

When was the last decent attacking player to come from Holland?

They are defo going thru a major lull.

Lots of these players are signed, done and dusted
before a bid is made.

Their people speak to our people,... Man utd manager
seemed to think he was available just a week ago.
Not to be.

He looked good in group games at world cup
not so good in knockouts, tough to judge on that.

One lad that does analysis has him 2nd to Messi on
current stats across a range of attacking
attributes, he's usually pretty decent at stats so
I'm guessing Liverpool have a very good deal.

All the big clubs would have been scouting at the World Cup and all will have had PSV's email addy.

The lad will have an agent and he would have been in contact with all the big spenders.

If RM or Barca or PSG or Man Utd or Newcastle or City had made an enquiry then PSV would not have sold young Cody today for £35m.

league hasn't gone up notches since Robben was here.

You Arsenal in their unbeaten season run, Chelsea's Mourinho conceding something like 15 goals in 38 matches and United were as strong as always. In recent times you've had Solskjaer's United beating Pep's City 4 times out of 9 and drawing 1 match, and that's a United team that was one of the worst in decades. People just tend to think as time marches on everything gets better. People also think Pep hasn't won the Champions League with City because it's just a cup competition, it's unlucky, it's a lotter, anything can happen, s*** excuses like that, Madrid won 5 since 2014, Barca won 4 in a 9 year period, this City team in the last 6 years have basically just proven that a squad depth filled with 2 quality players per position is what's needed to win the league but it's not quite good enough against the creme de la creme of Europe.

I'm sure clubs also had Roma's email address when Salah was there, and Southampton's when Van Dijk was there.

Just because United couldn't get him, you're trying to make out his s*** and nobody else wanted himLaugh
Maybe it's because it's because other top clubs are not at a low ebb like Liverpool atm and sorted their striking options out in summer, Barca have Lewandowski, Madrid have Benzema, Bayern have Mane, Gnabry, Musiala, City have Haaland, Juventus have Vlahovic, Inter have Martinez/Dzeko, there really is not any other top club that needs reinforcements now except United and Liverpool. Arsenal are buying Mudryk.

Having watched him play in the Eredivise before the World Cup and at the World Cup he looks like he'll need to build up some physicality but that aside, should fit like hand in glove into a Klopp side.

Kind Regards.

When you see some of the fees being banded around now I'd be more than happy to take a punt at 35m. When players like Anthony Gordon at Everton are being mooted around 50m it looks a steal even if he isnt successful. (Even Mudryk as noted above we're probably looking around 60-70m). As some of the commenters have said above playing in a Liverpool team as opposed to Utd makes a lot more sense stylistically.

I think EtH's number 1 priority is a good centreforward so I very much doubt he would want to spend any of his available budget on a left winger/sided midfielder.

But have it your way, I'm miffed because Liverpool have more money than Manchester United.
By:

Liverpool spend it better though SNC esp under Klopp

True United have spent stupid money under José, LvG & OGS.

Early days yet but EtH seems to have sent well.

Yep, no such thing as auctions nowadays. Players are tapped up before a bid is made most of the time; terms are usually known and agreed in advance and the actually signing of the contract is a mere formality. I'd imagine a lot of top players have a good idea which club they'll be at in two years' time nowadays.
By:
SirNorbertClarke
When: 27 Dec 22 21:54
Agree tapping up will be the norm nowadays and it'll all be done via the agent. The agent will then tell the club their client will only move to club X.

Of course the club can always say they want more money but then they'd be stuck with a disillusioned player.

So Liverpool offer £35m + a better wage than anyone else was prepared to better and they get their man.
By:
PorcupineorPineapple
When: 27 Dec 22 22:13
Or they sell the move to Gakpo so that he only wants to join them and the agent tells PSV they need to accept their (low) offer as he's not going anywhere else and you risk keeping a pissed off player who'll run his contract down.

Btw, the tapping up will have been done directly by VVD (and maybe Wijnaldum over the phone). Agent will probably not have been much involved.

As I said originally £35m for Gakpo seems on the low side in this day and age. I'm not massively sold on him btw (but then I wasn't on Suarez at the time!), but the idea that Liverpool have simply thrown huge amounts of money to secure this seems a bit like sour grapes if you ask me.

Bottom line is LFC were more in need of this player at this time than Man U.
By:

When: 27 Dec 22 22:41
I am not that much of a fan of Gakpo. Never really come across him till the WC.

Is he better than Rashford? We'll see.
By:
PorcupineorPineapple
When: 27 Dec 22 22:43
Are Utd blessed in attack? Would Gakpo struggle to get into their side right now? Who are their attackers? Rashford showing promise again (he's 25). Martial back getting the occasional game (27). Saw one Antony run earlier - he picked the ball up deep when a Forest corner broke down, ran forward desperately trying to  keep the ball on his left foot but struggling as every touch was misplaced and needed to be controlled all over again, then he stops when an overload's on and passes the ball across the pitch behind everyone else. Top. Sancho has been a League One player since joining. And then they're down to Elanga and Garnacho.

You saying Utd don't need to be any attacker at all right now? That they're well set in that dept? Not saying Gakpo's the bees knees exactly but I don't think you need to be M'Bappe to knock one of those lads out of the first XI surely.
By:
SirNorbertClarke
When: 27 Dec 22 22:50
Agree Antony is comically one footed.

United need a centre forward. Someone who will always be there to bang it in from 3 yards. A greedy bastard.

The Premier league is certainly not stronger than it was in 2004.

Problem though with Mesmerised list of successful Dutch players is that it was mostly a long gone generation.

Van Dijk top class and Wijnaldum good but not great. The you have the likes of Depay, who had more hype than Gakpo.....

The Dutch just don't seem to produce top class forwards anymore.
By:

When: 28 Dec 22 15:20
If everyone's fit for Liverpool next August they will have 5 forwards on big money and lengthy contracts, 2 of whom will see very little meaningful action.

Not conducive to squad harmony IMO.

Gakpo and EtH are rep'ed by the same company, SEG.
By:

When: 28 Dec 22 17:47
I doubt Diaz or Gakpo are on massive salaries tbh. Salah will obvs, and I imagine Nunez is on good money given his fee and Jota has signed a new deal so will have had a boost but the others are all £35M buys.
