the counter to that argument stu is that the only top side we beat in either of those tournies was Germany...

played against a lot of average stuff to get those outcomes...WC '18 - Tunisia, Panama, Belgium (L) Colombia (pens) Sweden, Croatia (L) Bel (L)
Euros '21 -  Croatia, Scotland, Czech Rep, Germany, Ukraine, Denmark, Italy (L)

That England squad is up there with the others

Every team has one top lad in their team

France are fluid, Brazil are flamboyant

We seem to be very structured and dont look as impressive in winning as those two mentioned but they can beat those two if they stop them from doing the things theyre good at. Easier said than done, but they can do it.

Southgate is the spanner..

This WC is up for grabs, no outstanding team, a few very good ones, all about who dares wins. Our lack of belief always kicks in when most needed

Too much criticism of Southgate for me only justified if Mount is back in the starting line up on Sunday

Yes I am frustrated by his negativity but he is the man in charge

I am also thinking maybe he should play Rice, Henderson and Bellingham in the knockout stages

Last night's result, and to some extent the performance,(Rashford's overall performance is being hyped to the rafters), only serves to demonstrate how wrong the approach v USA was.

To be fair, he's overachieved with the players he's had - semis previous WC, final nearly winning the Euros. Did we really have awesome world class players while doing that? Not sure we did.He may not be a great manager, but he knows how to 'manage' a tournament route.

Look a the teams he's beaten at majors versus the teams he's lost to. That is not overachievement. It is nothing special whatsoever, especially with home advantage at the euros. The draws he's got are entirely responsible for any misguided sense of overachievement.

England have been one of the best in the world at beating inferior sides for a long time. They were unbeaten in 20 qualifiers under Hodgson and won 10/10 in one campaign. It is not a barometer of where they are vis-a-vis the top sides like Brazil, Spain, France. They can't seem to hold their own in midfield against top sides and generally get dominated. But they took the lead very early against Croatia and Italy. Perhaps if they take the lead in the second half they might have enough to hold on.

Both Rashford’s goals were goal keeping errors.

Saka back in on right for me.

Ideally Foden at 10 with Rashford OR Sterling at 11 and Rice and Bellingham in the middle

At worst Henderson, Rice and Bellingham. Sala and any one of Rashford, Creakish, Foden or even Sterling on the left

If Mou t starts…….Cry

If England were to win this world cup it would be in spite of Southgate, not because of him. England have a great squad of players to thank for the fairly good form shown in a couple of recent tournaments. Southgate is a joke as manager.

Will he start Mount? If he does expect them to make a mess of it

Senegal will be hoping he does start him

spot on basil. gareth is awful but england have the best squad in the world, so even joe cole could get them to go all the way if they rode their luck in spite of the management.

Southgate sees football different than most fans.
He played in defence in an average villa side.
He never went out with tactics of trying to win a game. He spent years going out trying to not lose. Everything about his tactics screams don’t lose. He isn’t a winner. Dosent know how to win. Never been in a team that makes subs to try and finnish teams off.
He also believes that if you don’t lose you can’t be knocked out,bar pens or a fluky last minute goal.
Also by losing gallantly he also keeps his job,
He onLy ever makes subs as a last ditch attempt when he’s run out of ideas.
So it’s always 85 mins etc.

How could anyone watch England v USA and believe Jordan Henderson is needed. Desperate stuff

He slavishly sticks with Kane. Proven in the last 2 tournaments he isn’t good enough. He’s kept on the pitch for 120 mins to take a pen,4 touches in their box in 2 games,1 game we scored 6.
His office is closest to spurs,so he’s probably seen more spurs games than any other.

2 tournaments Kane has proven he’s not good enough, but on he ploughs.

He’s not really arsed about front 3. He’s obsessed with defence and midfield. It’s all he knows. Hoping Kane might fluke him a goal.
We should of won at least 3/4 world cups, but weak management cost us.

If Senegal don’t beat us,then the next team will,

Other USA game was there to win,so to was the Italy euros, but Gareth only sees how can we stop them attacking us,

Jordan Pickford is an accident waiting to happen, that’s how we ll go out,

Japan at 85/1 might surprise.

6 [six] goals scored against Iran and Star Striker Harry didn't have a single shot, not even one off-target.  People will say he was 'drawing defenders out' and other fancy sh*t but for a striker to not have a single shot in a game where his side is rampant is appalling.

He’s good at getting past the lesser sides and plotting his way through

We’ll see if he finally gets a rubber stamp win against a truly good side next week..

Wily old Gareth drawing them out with his slow tempo, sideways passing tactics and then hitting them with the old one-two.

I think.

I have to laugh about the claims his good runs have been beating poor sides - those same sides have historically knocked us out of tournaments so many times, maybe even qualifying defeats. They are all still international sides that have to be beaten and we haven't always managed that, even against so-called 'weaker' sides.

We may well lose against France, having said that, as may the entire WC opposition potentially. That would be no shame in a WC QF against the holders.

The idea that this team is good despite Southgate is laughable. He's a very good coach for these. It's not the most exciting football by any means but he has them in a good shape, they all know their jobs and play as a team. It's not a collection of talents like some teams, or a team set up to serve one or two stellar talents but a squad of generally 7/10 players who become 8.5/10 when put together.

Still think France are better and should knock them out but I bet they're more worried about the tie than England are currently. France are still a bit disunited and if you can keep M'Bappe quiet in the opening stages you may see their heads drop as they start looking round for who to blame rather than digging in.
By:

When: 05 Dec 22 09:36
I highly doubt France are more worried. They will see themselves as superior technically and tactically like the Croatians and Italians did and will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing England, who they will see as overhyped (eg farmers' league). Don't be surprised if Deschamps gets the better of Southgate tactically too.

You'd think Deschamps would encourage Mbappe to come off his favoured wing position and play on the shoulder of the CB's as he has much too much pace for Maguire and Stones and play their game accordingly while England will try and defend deep and counter

Since england were treated like heroes, returning back from italy in 1990. The mindset of losing on penalties.... will always be the best of the worst options, scape goating the players that miss

I don't think France are better certainly not sans Mbappe!

I think it is a tough call and the Gods will decide!

Dembele is a good player so is Saka!

Bellingham is growing into a something special but Rabiot has been playing well too.

Both defences are on parade!

We have as good a chance as we need!

Southgate is managing to ringfence his players away from the media and the constant distraction of the social media bullshine....

If he prevents his players heads from wobbling ... they may have half a chance
