Negative I assume?   West Am fans have big ideas about the standing of their wee club on the world stage.

Surprised it's 18 months, would have thought just til end of season would have done, not sure what the point in an 18 month deal is, that says you don't just want him to steer you to safety but you don't want him for the long term future either, it's a sort of we'll see how you get on in the next 5 months and if you've done better than we thought and the fans are not on our backs we'll extend it, if not we'll pay you off for the last 12 months, West Ham have 19 games left, in Moyes, last 19 games he won 6, drew 7, lost 6, if he could repeat that they'd be on 44 points and be comfortably safe. It's a very good short term move IMO, I'd have signed him for 5 months whilst looking for a replacement in the meantime. Not sure who West Ham fans were expecting exactly, Allegri?Mischief he's what they need right now unless they want Championship football and away trips to Wigan, Barnsley and Luton.

Moyes will have wanted 2 and a half years, the club will have wanted just to the end of the season.
18 months will be the compromise.

don't think Moyes was in a position to negotiate, 18 months out of work and similar options like Allardyce, Mark Hughes, Chris Coleman, Chris Houghton.

Moyes was certainly in a position to negotiate because it was very apparent that he was the choice.

They will have offered 6 months and he wanted 3 years so they compromised.

It's a poor choice though.

The 3 teams that went down two years ago were historically dreadful. So keeping West Ham up was no big achievement at all.

This is basically like Southampton sacking Hassenthal and reappointing Mark Hughes.

ha, no chance Moyes in a position to talk about length of contract, he'd have taken what he was given, nobody wanted to employ him for 18 months despite many vacancies arising and West Ham having many other options, teams being historically poor doesn't really have relevance to where they were at in an individual season, though there were poorer teams Moyes still finished comfortably away from relegation which is why he's been brought back in. They have 19 games left, in his last 19 games he achieved 25 points, even 18 or so points should/could do.

He also had a brilliant record at Everton, 9 seasons from 11 he had them in the top 8, one year finished 4th, couple of 5th placed finishes, only once in 10 years were they close to the bottom. West Ham player for player are not to dissimilar to those teams. Got to the FA Cup final as well.

Pellegrini was taking them down, owners know Moyes will sort out the defence and build from there, in terms of saving the club 10's of millions of pounds, it's a very good short term option, maybe poor long term option just because  the fans just wont tolerate his style over time again, wouldn't be surprised if he started benching their expensive flair players in favour of being more pragmatic, which means once safety is achieved the board will probably set him on his way again.

I think for this kind of level club, or to save any club from going down, the right move. Though Big Sam the same.

If Moyes had taken what was offered he would have agreed 6 months. West Ham want another fashionable manager long term but they have no chance of getting one right now.

I never saw what was so amazing about getting the 6th or 7th biggest club in the country - Everton - into 6th or 7th place most seasons. Moyes did a solid but unspectacular job there.

And this West Ham side is nothing like his Everton teams. 'Expensive flair players' are what they have spent their whole budget on since Moyes was last there. They have hardly anyone interested in tracking back etc

Interesting point except for the fact that there was 7 clubs below us and not 3.

but we don't know what he was initially offered, just know he was definitely offered 18 months which maybe means owners didn't want end of season media/fan distraction of who will be next manager when looking to avoid relegation.

haven't signed Moyes to do anything spectacular, he's a short term fix, if by the logic of using history to determine league finishing position, then West Ham are safe with him as they must be around the 10th or so biggest Prem side, but Moyes did more than hit par with some with 6 top 6 finishes, he improved them dramatically from previous seasons, with his record in bold....1993 > 13th-17-15-6-15-17-14-13-16-15-7th-17-4-11-6-5-5-8-7-7-6

Rice and Noble will probably sit deeper, full backs not crossing the half way line much, long balls up to haller, any flair player not doing dirty work will probably be dropped, likely to make a signing or 2 in Jan, maybe even loans.

None of these prem clubs are ever willing to take a punt on a lower league manager, like 18 month contract they'd jump at it to leave a Crawley or a Wycombe for example

Problem is, the players wouldn't give a no-name manager a chance.

Also, the demands on a top flight manager and a lower league equivalent are worlds apart.
Moyes struggled to cope with the difference between Everton and Man United, how would the Wycombe manager deal with it Shocked

Moyes is not a top top manager by any means, he's just a safe pair of hands at medium level clubs.

It works at these type of clubs because they have certain type of players who's ego's are not so huge and therefore does not need much managing, fans also don't demand certain styles, at least not as much as the traditional big 4 or 5 clubs.

The United team that Fergie left and he took over needed Major repair work and they were not replaced adequately, Rooney had been gone at the game for some time, Giggs was 40, Ferdinand, Evra, Vidic, Carrick, Van Persie well into their 30's, all their key players, others were not really good enough or surplus to requirements, Rafael, Jones, Anderson, Hernandez, Nani, Cleverly etc, he brought in Mata and Fellaini. Mistake to bring in Fellaini though, he needed half the squad out and new players in so was always on a hiding to nothing with that group of players, Fergie knew this and was canny enough to leave when he did.

As I said at the time of Moyes leaving, he rescued us from the relegation places to 13th place and should be given the chance to further improve the squad. The fans who wanted rid of him last time welcomed Pellegrini with open arms and we end up back where we started from and 180 million worse off. I judge managers on results and have been following West Ham since the mid 1950s and have learnt the hard way through the 1960s with great players and never finishing higher than 8th. If you can't defend you win nothing and we never learnt the lesson and probably never will.

West Ham got rid of him to go in a new direction. Now they get him back . For what ? If I was Moyes , they would have got told to Feck off . He can't be skint . Has he no shame ?

Moyes cannot be blamed for taking the money, he is in a win/win position and there are very few who would turn their nose up at such an offer.

Where he can actually take Wham is debatable, can he rally the players he has inherited into a team that are prepared to play for each other?

There is only so much a good keeper like Fabianski can do to stem the flow of goals, he needs a solid defence in front of him and those that are there at the moment do not look the right type to roll their sleeves up and battle, selling Tomkins to us was a brilliant piece of business on our part, not so great for Wham, similarly Kouyate, two players that give their all and the fans relate to for their efforts, albeit they may lack finesse that others may possess, but to my mind fans always prefer players who have heart over skill in a dogfight.

I feel that there are worse teams than the mix that Wham have and I believe Moyes will manage to keep them up, problem is the long term plan seems to have been reversed and it must be very frustrating for Wham supporters not knowing what the hierarchy have in mind from one minute to the next.

Cork Langer....It was a stupid mistake for us to sell Kouyate to Palace but Tomkins had began to disappoint a little so I understood the transfer. My understanding of the situation last time was that Gold wished to retain Moyes but Sullivan wanted Pellegrini and his view prevailed.

If West Ham feel sheepish about giving the manager they ditched an 18-month deal on Sunday night, they have no one but themselves to blame. When Moyes replaced Slaven Bilic in November 2017 he found an unfit side and improved their work ethic. Yet it did not convince the board to extend his initial six-month deal. Pellegrini arrived, promising attractive football, but West Ham were easy to play against under the Chilean and habits that disappeared under Moyes have returned.

“I actually thought I had got rid of some of the things and we’d got to the bit where there was quite a lot of non-negotiables like ‘You’re doing the work’,” Moyes said. “I feel as if I might need to go back to the start and say ‘We’re back to here’. I would have liked to have come in with a new message. What I do believe is there’s a stronger squad than when I first came in.”

Discipline will be on the agenda. “I’d have said that was probably one of the biggest jobs I had last time,” Moyes said. “It was zero tolerance. It looks like I am going back to that level. You either get on board or you don’t because I haven’t got enough time. If one or two of you don’t like it, then let me know.”

"They are getting a very experienced Premier League manager," said Moyes.
"I think there's only two or three managers with a better Premier League win record. That's what I do, I win.
"I'm here to get West Ham wins and get them away from the bottom three."

Noble's letter in full

Hello everyone.

As captain of this great football club, I want to speak directly to you, my fellow West Ham United supporters.

I know that we were going through a difficult time and the club decided to make a decision to change manager.

David Moyes knows the club and he knows a lot of the players and the players he worked with - myself, Manu, Angelo, Arthur, Cress, Dec, Reidy, Michail and Zaba - really liked and respected him and the way he worked when he was here. He got players playing to their full potential and I hope and believe he can do it again.

I know the fans are not happy with the situation we find ourselves in, but we all love and support our club and we need to get behind the manager and try to get ourselves out of this position.

The manager worked for a long time at a club that is very similar to West Ham in Everton, and you don't stay at a club for that long under the scrutiny of passionate fans unless you are good at your job.

I think David is the best person for the job.

My main thing is that I have always put the club before myself in my career. I just want us to do well. The last few seasons have been full of ups and downs, and I just want the club to be stable.

We hoped that would happen with Manuel because he is such a great guy and had a proven managerial pedigree, but we now need to get back to what we are as West Ham United and achieve realistic targets before aiming higher. When Manuel was appointed, I was really hoping it would be that way, but it didn't work out.

I enjoyed some fantastic football under him and learned so much from him and his staff and I know they were genuinely gutted that it didn't work out, but I do feel like we need to walk before we can run and build something.

We need to win football matches and, however that comes at the minute, I'll take that.

Everybody knows I care for this football club and I want to win so badly, not just for myself but for every West Ham United fan out there.

Sometimes I take so much pressure on my own shoulders that every time we make a mistake or concede a goal, I blame myself, rightly or wrongly, and my emotion can come out.

That's why I have played at this level for so long, because I care so much, and I want us to do well.

I know it's a tough time for the fans, I understand that, but I do believe we need to come together and show the manager support and start getting results because, at the end of the day, results are all that matters.

Let's hope we all enjoy a happy New Year.

Come on you Irons!
