Still remember the agony of his penalty save from Geoff Hurst in '72 ............ RIP

Reynard, I was at Old Trafford that night it poured of rain and I was stood in the open due to the stand having to be refurbished. What I most remember was Bobby Moore saving a penalty and then they scored from the rebound. It was a very miserable 25th birthday for me!

At the time , maybe , but in hindsight that night was a great night given the memories it's left us with

Just looked it up reynard and I was mistaken as the Banks penalty save was in the previous game rather than the replay.

first game i attended at sjp saw gordon banks in goal.

quite a treat to see my first world cup winner in real life.

so sad that his career was cut short.

certainly a benchmark for all that will follow in goal for england

Unbelievable save against Pele but I still think he should have held on to it. No matter.

Banks was on of those keepers who had great feet,made saves look easier than they were

Still remember seeing the ball arcing the bar in front of us
I thought it took two replays for Stoke to knock us out

Very sad news indeed.

Six times winner of the FIFA goalkeeper of the year award.

Might have played for a good few years more too but for the accident.

Reynard, due to living in Yorkshire I was only able to see the Old Trafford match. The other replay was at Hillsborough which I was unable to attend and followed a two leg tie. Some 7 hours were played before the result was decided.

when you watch the old clips,games on tv,what do you see the likes of banksy do a 100 times a game but cant remember the last time you saw an EPL keeper do ?

"Jairzinho was flying down the wing, and he clips the ball to the far post, and Pele - who climbed to such a height better than anybody else - headed the ball and Gordon went from one post to another and he flicks the ball with his fingertips and it just goes over the crossbar," he said.

"I patted him on his head, and I said 'why didn't you catch it?' and the abuse that came back was unbelievable."

Nor do they appear to carry a small toiletry bag which they would place just inside their goal at the start of each half

bit risky in the likes of Manchester putting a 5 grand loui vutton toilet bag inside the post, , also miss the arc on the edge of the box, what was that for by the way ?

I never thought I would see the day that goalkeepers would pass the ball to and fro to defenders instead of clearing it upfield.

Yep oldschool for me too - keeper should boot it hard as possible every time...the goal's that way...

RIP, more sad news it's a sign we are all getting older, can you imagine now the worlds top goalie playing just for Stoke and Leicester, just wouldn't happen, RIP legend.

I remember Peter saying on MOTD that when he was playing he wanted the ball as far away from him as possible.

Sad news to hear. Arguably the greatest goalie that these shores have ever produced. A football legend and any who saw it, will never ever forget that magnificent save from Pele. Not only a great sportsman but also a great ambassador for the game. Condolences to his family, friends and and all Stoke and England supporters.

That England v Brazil game in 1970 was an absolute classic from start to finish.

I remember Jim Montgomery's save like it was yesterday but couldn't tell you (without checking) which teams were in the FA Cup final for the last decade! Still not sure if his save from the header (Cherry) was better of from the follow up (Lorimer).  Gordon Banks a true legend and a gentleman.  I remember being at Tranmere v Stoke FA Cup 4th round 1972.  Record ever crowd of 24,000 for Tranmere.  I'm sure most of them were there just to see Banks! R.I.P. Gordon.
