Got a picture of Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Gordon Banks and myself at one of those sporting dinners they used to do together, it is my prized possession.
RIP Banksey, you legend. |

Shame it was that G.Banks.

Meet him ....top man....best goalkeeper there has ever been....
By:
Shame that it was G.Banks, (i was meant to say),
as the 66 squad are diminishing , lets hope some will still be around for the next WC as i think we have a great chance ![]() |
By:
If he'd had played in the 70 game against Germany, we may have won it again
By:
Four 1966 legends gone out of the XI, seven still with us.
By:
(Two of the German team have died, out of interest)
RIP Banksy |

Awful news. R.I.P. Gordon.

Reynard, I was at Old Trafford that night it poured of rain and I was stood in the open due to the stand having to be refurbished. What I most remember was Bobby Moore saving a penalty and then they scored from the rebound. It was a very miserable 25th birthday for me!

Just looked it up reynard and I was mistaken as the Banks penalty save was in the previous game rather than the replay.
By:
just shown it on skysports sparrow
By:
Strangely sj I was just watching this clip from the replay https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/most-mental-semi-final-ever-when-bobby-moore-went-goal-and-saved-penalty

first game i attended at sjp saw gordon banks in goal.
quite a treat to see my first world cup winner in real life. so sad that his career was cut short. certainly a benchmark for all that will follow in goal for england |
By:
loved that old kit of yours, i wonder what todays players/managers would make of the pitch
By:
Unbelievable save against Pele but I still think he should have held on to it. No matter.
RIP Gordon. |
By:
Banks was on of those keepers who had great feet, made saves look easier than they were
By:
sparrow - Bans penalty save was in front of the North Bank at the Boleyn .
Still remember seeing the ball arcing the bar in front of us ![]() I thought it took two replays for Stoke to knock us out ![]() |
By:
Very sad news indeed.
Six times winner of the FIFA goalkeeper of the year award. Might have played for a good few years more too but for the accident. RIP Mister Banks. |
By:
Reynard, due to living in Yorkshire I was only able to see the Old Trafford match. The other replay was at Hillsborough which I was unable to attend and followed a two leg tie. Some 7 hours were played before the result was decided.

when you watch the old clips, games on tv,what do you see the likes of banksy do a 100 times a game but cant remember the last time you saw an EPL keeper do ?
By:
A sad day, but this made me laugh, from the bbc page
"Former England midfielder Alan Mullery played with Banks in the 1970 World Cup match against Brazil, and described to 5 live the famous save that denied Pele. "Jairzinho was flying down the wing, and he clips the ball to the far post, and Pele - who climbed to such a height better than anybody else - headed the ball and Gordon went from one post to another and he flicks the ball with his fingertips and it just goes over the crossbar," he said. "I patted him on his head, and I said 'why didn't you catch it?' and the abuse that came back was unbelievable." |

1stTP - Bounce the ball
![]() |
By:
correct Reynard, still looks strange ,wrong when you see the old games, but at least it quickened game up ,kept it moving
By:
Nor do they appear to carry a small toiletry bag which they would place just inside their goal at the start of each half
![]() |
By:
and wear caps
By:
bit risky in the likes of Manchester putting a 5 grand loui vutton toilet bag inside the post,
, also miss the arc on the edge of the box, what was that for by the way ? |
By:
I never thought I would see the day that goalkeepers would pass the ball to and fro to defenders instead of clearing it upfield.
By:
doesn't add anything to the game imo
By:
Yep oldschool for me too - keeper should boot it hard as possible every time...the goal's that way...
RIP Mr Banks, a little before my time, but legend still. |
By:
on that point, Schmiechal (Peter) had the right idea, constantly turning defense into attack up the field.
By:
RIP, more sad news it's a sign we are all getting older, can you imagine now the worlds top goalie playing just for Stoke and Leicester, just wouldn't happen, RIP legend.
