I've often read that backing really short odds doesn't work in the long run because the many wins will not beat the one big loss. But I'm curious, is there any sort of consensus at what point odds aren't seen as short?

have a look at the 300 bets thread, you can see people backing very short odds and building a bank that way. anything goes imo, it's about the patience and discipline with the staking and finding the value. no matter what odds you go for, you will eventually hit a loser. at shorter odds it will hopefully take you longer before you hit a losing bet. if you stick to things around evens or better, it will happen more often.
