Who cares.  The job of a manager is to manage, not raise a new generation of coaches.  Ferguson was infinitely more successful than Robson and so therefore was the better manager.

Fergie was in charge for 20-odd years. In that time he must have had hundreds nearly thousands of players on United's books. That list basically says some footballers become managers. Nothing to do with Fergie.

I think most football fans would recognise that those who have followed fergus at Utd are operating in a much more competitive environment.
There is a tendency in the uk to give managers godlike status.
Busby, Revie, Shankly, Clough, Stein, Herbert Chapman etc
What is probably overlooked at Utd was the success of the Edwards family in making Man Utd the richest club in these isles.

Don't think Robson made Mourinho or Pep and don't think Robson or Fergie were tactical coaches like Mourinho and Pep. Fergie was more of a manager working over a coach. That, and the fact that the hairdryer treatment is outdated and wouldn't work with the modern player, would explain why none of his ex players have been anywhere near as good in management.

Mourinho and esp Pep tended to get the better of Fergie by having more modern, advanced tactics than any of the old school managers. The players that played under Fergie only learned outdated methods from him imo.

Disagree that Mourinho/Pep were better tacticians than Ferige, it was a combination of Mourinhohaving dirty sides/outspending United and/or simply having better players/teams at the time.

Fergie's teams were built around 'Power Play', Pep's were Possession based and Mourinho's was cheating/players running through brick walls for him, though not so much anymore. I would imagine Jose's deployed the same hairdryer treatment Fergie did, in fact probably more so, ex United players said Fergie only actually every went into that mode very occassionally to give players a kick up the backside when they needed it rather than during every match.

Mourinho's Porto team were a very dirty side, they used to pull every trick in the book, the uefa cup final v Celtic I recall especially stood out, they were the same v United in 04, it wasn't a case of Porto or Mourinho having better tactics, at Chelsea Jose walked into a ready Made football team that had virtually bought a whole new squad that transfer window and the 2 before under Ranieri who himself had ran out of time to win the title in 04 as they started to come good chasing down Arsenal. Ranieri would havev won the title the following season imo, Jose simply took over and finished the job Claudio had started, a bit like someone spending ages trying to unscrew the a tight lid of a Jam jar, then someone else waltzing into the kitchen and take it off after all the hard work was already done in unloosening it.

He started that season having bought/inherited Robben, Duff, Bridge, Drogba, Crespo, Makelele, J Cole, Ferreiria, Cech, Carvalho and it took United 2 more seasons to catch their spending up as they had already fallen behind Arsenal, this was during one of Ferguson's rebuilding periods as the remnants of the 99-01 team were fading away. When Fergie first came to United he wasn't afforded the same luxery and too him years to filter out the poorer players and get the squad into his mould and to attract better players. Jose walked into a club that had a huge momentum swing in progress.

I think Fergie faced Guardiola 4 times in the Champions Leauge, Guradiola won 2, Drew 1, Lost 1, but the 1st game in 08 United really should have won that, they created quite a few chances and Ronaldo had the chance to win it with a penalty but missed.

The two finals they lost to Barca they were well beaten, but they were well beaten by a team that had superior players and some of the best ever at their peak, in defence they were evenly matched but up top, Messi, Henry, Iniesta, Xavi, Eto'o, Toure were too good for the likes of Park Ji Sung, an ageing Giggs, Hernandez and Anderson, Barca's players were all technically superior, largely a result of their academy system which Pep benefitted from enormously, if you swapped the managers around in reverse roles, I don't think Pep would have gotten the better of Ferguson with inferior players. Guardiola at every job has literally always had the best players at the time. Ferguson started from a much lower base.
Report thelatarps December 10, 2018 6:58 AM GMT
Hmmm
I have to disagree with some of that.
I would say that Fergus 'roonaldo' side had a lot more similarities to jose's chelsea than it did to either peps barca or wengers arse.
I think Fergus has admitted as much.
From my own point of view, far too much in the media is made of the 'united way' under fergus.
There were plenty of times when utd under saf came off a difficult midweek european tie to be absolutely lifeless at old trafford the following weekend. I should know I bet on most of them.
The difference was fergus had a world class forward line to bale him out of trouble. Something Utd do not have now in this more competitive environment.
I always felt there was an air of pantomime about the so called epl golden era when there were 8 champions league finalists in 8 years from 2005-12.
It was a unique time when the champions league money gave the four ucl clubs a massive competitive advantage over the rest of the epl.
It effectively meant that Fergus could train his sights on just 3 rivals.
And I have to say that Park Ji Sung was a magic player. Real hard runner breaking from midfield, with a goal threat too. He used to start off those fast counter attacks which rooney or CR7 would finish off. Sort of like Ngolo Kante but with more flair. Done me a right few favours over the years old Parky.

Fergie lost 2/2 to Pep Barca. It was Rijkaard's team he beat in 2008.

I don't agree Fergie did a great job of rebuilding a crap Big Ron United. The Atkinson team was strong. Fergie's impressive rebuild was replacing the crap mid table United he assembled himself by 1989 with his great team of the early 90s.
Report darren_discombobulates_sports December 10, 2018 8:59 AM GMT
oh yes it was Rijkaard, pep took over 2 months later

the two losses in the finals though, Barca really did have superior players in attack all round imo, players who suited tika taka perfectly, I don't think it can be understimated how important it was having the greatest player of all time in your team when you take over, Iniesta and Xavi were not bad either, all 3 European cup winners under Rijkaard 2 years previous.

Fergie did knock Jose's Inter team out of Europe as well.
Report donny osmond December 10, 2018 9:16 AM GMT
if fergie was managing now he would have a modern coach in place

robson would see his tactics being more relevant than they were

fergie ruled with rod of steel, robson with a cuddle, and a chat.

i bet they loved chatting about the game, ....would be great if their true wisdom
was passed on, and not just their bluster.

Mourinhos Porto side didn't have better players than Man U. There were a few teams in that CL that had better players on paper. They were very tactically defensive and clinical when it came to taking chances. They got lucky with the draw too. His Chelsea sides were better but similar in terms of being clinical. His Inter side wasn't a stand out team on paper either but he got the better of Pep by playing defensive at home and countering quickly up the wings, avoiding the Barca press and hitting them on the flanks where they were weak, then parking the bus in the away leg.

Agree that Pep had better players at Barca than Fergie at Man U in the 2 CL finals, but tactically Fergie was outdone also. He had no answer to the Barca press and no way of winning the ball back from them. He could have tried to switch the play like Mourinho's Inter did or to try and press Barca, which nobody really did at the time but which some teams try nowadays against Pep's sides with a great degree of success. But with Xavi, Iniesta and Messi in those sides the result was inevitable imo.

Fergie in his latter years recognised that he was past it in the coaching department and used the likes of McClaren and Queiroz to do the day to day tactical/coaching stuff with his players. Something Wenger never did.

I'm surprised Bob Paisley never got a mention in this thread. His Liverpool sides dominated at home & in Europe. He left a great side that won 3 major trophies (European Cup, League title, & League Cup) the year after he retired. & in keeping with the theme of this thread, the 2 managers who followed him continued his great work by winning more silverware.

I'd never put Brian Clough down as an all time great for the simple reason that Peter Taylor was highly instrumental in the success he & Cloughie achieved at Derby & Forest. You only have to look at how Clough's impact went into decline when they both went their separate ways.

Reading this thread has got me thinking about the most successful British managers since the 1960s.  Almost without exception, they were born in Scotland or the north east of England. In no particular order, Don Revie, Bill Shankly, Jock Stein, Bobby Robson, Alex Ferguson, Matt Busby, Howard Kendall, Harry Catterick, Brian Clough, Kenny Dalglish, Bob Paisley, George Graham. All the aforementioned have won at least 3 trophies.  Add to the list Lawrie McMenemy and Bob Stokoe who both won FA Cups with second division sides against far superior opposition.

I think it must show how good a coach Kidd must be to survive from Fergie and apparently flourishing coaching Pep's City.
