For those not old enough to remember, a legend of the Leeds Utd side from the 70's and a legend from the collecting football cards era, the ones that came with a stick of chewing gum.

Yep was an excellent player in any position, possibly to his detriment, as i always thought he was good enough in central defence to be an England regular, RIP Paul.Sad

RIP to a great player

Taken from the Mirror today -

Jimmy Armfield in his autobiography said about Madeley "He once actually signed a new contract on what was virtually a blank piece of paper. I called him in to discuss terms and opened by saying we'll give you so much. He replied that he had no intentions of leaving Leeds so he might as well sign it and let me fill in the details. I said do you want 2 or 3 years & he replied by saying either way. I'll leave it to you. I just want to play for Leeds and that was that"

A different time of course but when you think of the money grabbers of today it does make you think!

Back in the 70's I thought he was the best player in a very good Leeds team.
He made the game look ridiculously easy and never appeared to give the ball away.

RIP

I remember being bored, spending a lot of time in his DIY store in Truro as a kid as my Dad was doing up our house! He must have died a wealthy man judging on how much my old man spent!

I'm a veteran and have seen some great, great English and Scottish sides( believe it or not ) but at a certain stage of the late 60's into the 70's Leeds played the finest football I have ever seen, anywhere in Britain.  With even a moderate amount of luck they would have won ALL THREE EUROPEAN TROPHIES. Madeley, a Leeds boy, played a big, big part in that.  R.I.P.
