Carrick getting job, to be announced before end of season

Report duffy May 13, 2026 3:41 PM BST
I suppose Carrick ticks the most important box of all, that being he will be malleable, happy to have the job, extremely unlikely to hold the boards feet to the fire, yep, he'll do nicely.

And the added kicker is that when it all goes wrong the board can sit back and say, as they did with OGS, that they were only giving all those fuzzy nostalgic fans hamstrung by the United way and DNA, what they wanted.....yep he'll do nicely.
Report the_don May 24, 2026 6:23 PM BST
11pts clear of Liverpool and 19 ahead of Chelsea is ridiculous really, whether you view that from the start of the season or even the New Year. Even more unlikely is that we beat Brighton and also Danny Welbeck didn't score against us! (PS please no Baleba in the summer)

Said it a few times, but it shows the poor quality this season. Arsenal were deserved title winners but only really down to one of the poorest City sides of the last decade and no other challenger.
Report duffy May 24, 2026 7:10 PM BST
Back in the CL is a step in the right direction, whether it leads to anything we'll have to wait and see, the signings were enough to improve our position in what turned out to be a poor league but the quality of the performances are still a big cause for concern and something the Carrick supporters haven't seemed to grasp, only seeing the result.

It's a massive Summer now and the midfield additions are going to have to be the right ones to enable us to gain more control in games and not concede so much possession, winning the ball back quicker and allowing our defence to not have to defend every counter launched by the opposition.

The bottom line though when all said and done is that we would have taken this at the start of the season.
Report brentford May 24, 2026 7:24 PM BST
Didn't see today's performance or result coming but rounds off a very nice end to the season..

entirely agree with the views that much still to prove for the club just not to go backwards but can at least enjoy and breathe again after last couple of seasons and indeed 3 of the last 4  - places the club in a much more stable and positive position to approach the summer transfer window..

Carrick regardless of views about his future deserves a lot of credit for the calm he's brought to a situation that could have just spiralled even further..

he's probably earned a shot at the gig in the process but next season  will be tougher - not least game to be played ..but difficult to believe Chelsea, L'pool and even Spurs won't be better and back in the fight for top 6 along with Villa and maybe N'castle depending on how they can deal with PSR this summer..

Wow! We came third in the worst Premier League in donkey's years.

Biggest eye opener for me was seeing pictures of Metropolitano Stadium.

We are 10 years behind the opposition and stuck with **** owners and **** management.

And without 32 year old Bruno Fernandes we'd be lucky to finish in the top 10.
Report the_don May 25, 2026 8:24 PM BST
I agree fully with the comments re the stadium, owners etc. It's almost a running joke that whenever we have a decent 2 or 3 months the noise over the Glazers, the leaking roof and now the total non progress of a new stadium goes quiet. It shouldn't.

It's strange (but also predictable) that Radcliffe and co. came in with the allowance to have a say over footballing matters only, yet seem to talk the talk and also take the flak (often rightly so) about all aspects of the club. The Glazers will be delighted that part of their plan has played out perfectly.

So, lots to do on and off the pitch. But surely there hasn't been a better chance in the last decade for a team to grasp the nettle and take advantage of a real vacuum of top class competition - especially in the Premier League. We can hope.......

Manchester United to build new 100,000-seat stadium 350m away from Old Trafford
Master plan for £2bn ‘Stadium District’ unveiled weeks after club secure 25 acres of land near existing home

Manchester United have confirmed they will build their new 100,000-seat stadium 350 metres from Old Trafford.

The club and Trafford Council unveiled the master plan for the Trafford Wharfside project at United’s home on Thursday morning.

It included artists’ impressions of the £2bn “Stadium District” in which the new stadium would sit following last month’s announcement United had secured 25 acres of land north west of Old Trafford.

The triangular plot – located between Wharfside Way, Europa Way and John Gilbert Way – was acquired from Indurent, a leading UK-based industrial and logistics real-estate company owned by global private-equity giant Blackstone.

United had spent months locked in protracted talks with Freightliner to acquire land around Old Trafford but baulked at the valuation put on it by the maritime intermodal logistics operator.

Some reports claimed Freightliner was demanding as much as £400m, although well-placed sources said those figures were inflated.

The decision not to build on the existing Old Trafford footprint could allow United to continue playing in front of a capacity crowd while the new stadium is being built.

The artists’ impressions appear to indicate the existing arena would then be demolished, but the club said no decision had been taken over its future.

Collette Roche, chief executive, New Stadium Development, at Manchester United, said: “The publication of the Wharfside Masterplan marks another significant milestone in our journey to create a new world-class home for Manchester United at the heart of a vibrant and transformational district for Trafford and Greater Manchester. Together with our partners, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver a destination that creates lasting benefits for supporters, local communities and the wider region for decades to come.

“The proposed stadium site is ideally located alongside Old Trafford, enabling us to preserve the heritage, traditions and matchday rituals that are so important to our supporters, while also providing the connectivity and infrastructure required to deliver a truly world-class fan experience.

“We are committed to building a world-class stadium with our supporters, not simply for them. Atmosphere, affordability and accessibility will remain at the heart of our plans, and we look forward to continuing our engagement with fans and other stakeholders as we move into the next phase of design and development.”

The new stadium has been planned as the centrepiece of a regeneration that would create 48,000 local jobs and 15,000 new homes, adding £7.3bn per annum to the UK economy.

Cllr Tom Ross, leader of Trafford Council, said: “We are delighted to introduce the master plan which starts a long journey to piece together what could happen where, to bring this world-class cultural and sporting destination to life.

“We want to create a great place to be, not just on matchdays but every day – and we’re looking for as many residents and businesses as possible to help us to shape this vision, through our forthcoming consultation process.

“Wharfside will become a network of attractive neighbourhoods in which to live, work, wander, explore, relax with family, enjoy nature and wildlife, meet friends, eat out, have a drink, shop and be entertained.

“It will have the best of parks and waterside spaces, housing including affordable options in vibrant and diverse localities, new health and educational facilities, joined-up public transport and places to walk, cycle and be active.”

Report brentford August 5, 2026 5:36 PM BST
Utd didn't want another loan so once the buy option wasn't taken that was that for the time being..not inconceivable if no deals get done that he could go back on loan there but unlikely you'd think as they've spent decent money on the position with Gordon...

Club have been rather quiet in the transfer window.

Is Carrick going to put his faith in the youngsters?

still spent 85m ish (Santos, Tielemans) with almost certainly one or two more to come I'd have thought...don't think they'll be able to get Hall now as Newcastle have lost so many of late - would probably only be at a daft price now..

Shea Lacy has had some nice moments in pre season and I think is viewed as being worth a genuine squad place at least to see how he goes this season..the Fletcher lads I'd expect to get some more minutes this season as well with the time they've now been around the 1st team and the number of games this year..
Report duffy August 5, 2026 5:58 PM BST
Very disappointing window, the fans are being asked, and many have swallowed, the we're skint and are therefore being sensible BS, they've missed all their targets and saw Tielemans going relatively cheap and they thought they could placate the fans , oh, he's good, the fans will fall for that one so they snapped him up.

The board have reached their zenith in CL qualification, the money will keep rolling in so no need to push for honours as that is not a necessity.

We have seen through this window precisely why Carrick was given the job, happy to be here and no pressure being applied from his direction.

We are now having this notion that Rashford and injury prone Mount are akin to new signings and world beaters whilst continually having the Santos is world class narrative being foisted onto us that Chelsea somehow couldn't see.

We needed legs and aggression in the midfield as well as another top striker and we haven't got it done.

Last summer the board did a good job as they needed to get back into the CL, now they've got there they've sat back and not gone again.
Report brentford August 5, 2026 7:32 PM BST
I think that's a bit harsh - as I say I'd be amazed if you don't see one more (at least) significant signing, you also have to take into account how much they spent last year when they didn't really have the money so that's rolling in to this seasons finances and approach..

Ugarte's injury has cost then about 20-25m and Rashford not going to Barca about 25 as well...leads to having to avoid the blank cheque approach that some seem to want...PSR is real however much we wish it wasn't..

Santos has definitely looked pretty decent to this point but I do worry that MF athleticism is going to remain an issue when we start plating full speed games, wait and see on that..
Report the_don August 8, 2026 5:23 PM BST
Who would have thought that basing Mount's availability on the last 3 games rather than the last 3 seasons would be a mistake..........

In terms of the 2 midfielders signed, I'm fairly happy that they both materialised very quickly and weren't the usual players linked with every top team (Baleba, Anderson, Fernandez, Wharton). Of those, I would have taken Anderson but while I think we could have paid £120m, it would have ended up more and City seemed to be his chosen destination quite a while ago.

At least one more athletic midfielder required, I do think Santos has promise. No idea when Tielemans will be fit, but actually he's just come on as sub Laugh
Report duffy August 8, 2026 5:41 PM BST
INEOS are pushing the narrative, which many fans are swallowing, of sensible spending but it seems to be that what they are saying is that players that cost really big money are automatically not worth it whereas it could be that one or two of those players are value, I'd put Guimares into that category, Arsenal have got a really good deal there, a player we are crying out for and should have been in for.

However, I can't see past Arsenal for the title again this season. I do think they might get off to a slow start with some after effects of the World Cup and lots of matches last season. There are too many doubts or questions about all the other possible contenders, mainly due to new or recently appointed managers.

Could actually see us finishing 2nd or 3rd again, purely down to those doubts about those around us (similar to last season), then again it wouldn't be a surprise if we were anywhere down to 7th or 8th place, especially if the squad stays as it is.

By the way, Bruno will not be going anywhere this summer, especially not at the prices mentioned Crazy Maybe while Amorim was in charge and playing him deeper but no way this summer while Carrick is there.

Having 9 out fielders carry a striker is an option, but a team playing 10 and no carry
will have an advantage so long as they share scoring burden.

Sesko has been injured and not playing and as he's the size of an artic he'll probably be at full match sharpness in about two months, you don't want Cunha or Mbuemo playing there as however capable they might be you lose them running and breaking games open from deeper which is their real strength and in games where we are facing a low block I want aproper 9 that has the instinct to play the role in tight spaces.
