His name is going to go stratospheric in the next season or two."

Going by the words of German football expert Raphael Honigstein, Liverpool's club-record £116m capture of Florian Wirtz could prove one of the deals of the summer.

The 22-year-old German attacking midfielder has agreed a deal to sign for the Premier League champions in a package that could eventually be worth a British record £116m.

"He will bring a lot of class and poise," Honigstein added on BBC Radio 5 Live. "He is more or less the fully-formed article.

"He has played for Leverkusen and Germany so knows the demands that are on him, but still, he will have to adjust to the pace of the Premier League and the more physical way.

"Opponents will try to negate his influence and that might prove a challenge, but he is young enough and good enough. He is not easily intimidated and stands up strong to the challenge. You are buying a super star."

Wirtz made his top-flight debut aged 17 for Bayer Leverkusen in May 2020 and just 19 days later he became the then-youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history against the might of Bayern Munich - a club who were also in contention for his signature this summer.

Since making his debut for Leverkusen, Wirtz has provided 44 assists in the Bundesliga, ranking him third of all players - but everyone else in the top five is at least 29 years old, indicating his high ceiling for development.

He will become the second player Liverpool have bought from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, with right full-back Jeremie Frimpong having arrived in a £34m deal.

The Reds will now turn their attentions to securing a deal for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, with talks taking place about a deal of between £45m-£50m.

"They key factor was, unlike other clubs, Liverpool presented a really thought-out vision," said Honigstein. "A very clear vision of how and where he will play.

"At Bayern, it was very difficult to fit him in alongside Jamal Musiala, at Man City they haven't had that central player. I don't think any club came near when representing the ultimate package and vision."

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has emerged as a shock leading transfer target for Atletico Madrid. Robertson is expected to face a strong challenge for his starting role next season with the Reds closing on a deal to sign £45million-rate Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

And the Scotland international, who is approaching the final 12 months of his current contract at Anfield, is towards the top of Atletico's wanted list as the Spanish outfit look to strengthen their defensive resources this summer.

Weirdly interesting and interestingly weird to see the Robbo to Atleti rumours. I hope it happens. Firstly, we all know he won't be first choice next season and he gets a good last contract and signing on fee as well as playing time at the top level. Also, it's a nice bit of anti-sentimentality from us. He's been a brilliant servant. Our best left back ever. But he's on the decline and it makes sense to get some money in for him rather than give him a few million for a year for him to play second fiddle. Also, it'd be fun to see him come up against Trent next year.

Isak's ace. I always get the feeling he's a bit injury prone but not sure if that's really the case. I've always thought he's just too expensive. Especially with Wirtz now. But he's clearly the best out there not already tied to a mega-club.

Liverpool have agreed a £40m deal to sign left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

The 21-year-old Hungary international is set to join the Premier League champions after two seasons with the Cherries.

Bournemouth have already signed Adrien Truffert from Rennes as his replacement.

Liverpool's deal for Kerkez comes with the Reds close to completing a club-record £116m move for Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz.

They have also signed Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong from the German club for £29.5m.

Serbia-born Kerkez began his senior career at Hungarian side Gyor before a move to Italian club AC Milan.

He failed to make an appearance for the Serie A outfit before a switch to Dutch team AZ Alkmaar in January 2022.

He helped AZ Alkmaar finish fourth in the Dutch top flight in 2022-23 when he scored five goals and provided seven assists in 52 appearances.

The Eredivisie side also reached the semi-finals of the 2022-23 Europa Conference League before being beaten by eventual winners West Ham.

Kerkez joined Bournemouth in summer 2023 when Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes worked for the Cherries.

He played all 38 league games last season as Bournemouth finished ninth with a club-record 56 Premier League points, with Kerkez contributing two goals and six assists.

Kerkez, who has made 23 appearances for Hungary, will join compatriot Dominik Szoboszlai at Liverpool.

His expected arrival at Anfield leaves the future of Reds left-backs Andy Robertson, who has been linked with Atletico Madrid, and Kostas Tsimikas unclear.

Liverpool are keen to retain Robertson and allow current back-up Tsimikas to leave, but they acknowledge that 31-year-old Scot Robertson may want to move on in search of regular football.

All this business regarding Isak, Gordon though goes to what I was saying on the other thread about Newcastle reaching their level, there should not be any talk of your so called rivals being able to take your best players away from you whether it happens or not is beside the point. It's not instant though. The pulling and keeping power of Man City is way different to what it was ten or fifteen years ago. And there's always still a pecking order. Look at Trent. As for Gordon, I wouldn't be surprised if the club is perfectly happy to see his name linked to other clubs to see if they could get a good wedge in for him. They could do a lot better imo.

Report duffy June 21, 2025 4:31 PM BST
I agree about Gordon, but the point is that it should be an affront, whether in certain circumstances you'd be happy to get rid or not, to see your so called best players being linked to rivals, that would have to stop, yes City's pulling power is dfferent now, but that's pulling power getting players in, that takes time and is different to player's leaving, from the moment the new owners arrived their best players leaving or being linked to a rival would have ceased immediately unless City were happy for it to happen. IMO
Report SirNorbertClarke June 21, 2025 5:07 PM BST
obsessing?
Report PorcupineorPineapple June 21, 2025 8:13 PM BST
I think pulling and keeping power are ultimately the same thing. And it's all about hierarchy. City have climbed the ladder for England. In reality they're probably top dogs (or would be without the cloud hanging over them). They're serial winners, got the best coach, great team mates and can pay better than anyone else. But as with Trent and going back to Ronaldo with you guys, all English teams will still play second fiddle to the Spanish giants. That's just how it is. Newcastle are a bit like City under Mark Hughes or Mancini. Getting better, are a big draw for up an coming players from smaller teams but not yet a big and established name to get proper superstars in. It's more likely than not that they'll get there as they have unlimited funds, but just not yet.

I hear you Dragon, but it's the name of the game, as PoP rightly pointed out. Carrick was the same when he left West Ham and then us for Utd; it was 'his' club, which I do believe was a true statement, but they all say it. Harry Kane was a Gooner, but never outwardly said it and Bergkamp (allegedly) grew up supporting Spurs... as did Roy Keane who actually admitted this on TV. There are many more that can be added to the list. I personally don't think TAA done a lot wrong, but I do appreciate that Liverpool supporters may think differently though. Only one player has ever riled me, Sol Campbell, but that was a different set of circumstances, as Mes correctly pointed out. And the world keeps on turning.

Report The Dragon July 2, 2025 11:40 AM BST
Bayer Leverkusen have signed defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a £35m deal.

The 22-year-old centre-back has joined the German Bundesliga club on a five-year contract.

Quansah was part of the England side that won the European Under-21 Championship by beating Germany in the final on Saturday.

His move is the third deal between the clubs this summer after Liverpool signed midfielder Florian Wirtz and defender Jeremie Frimpong.

Newcastle wanted to sign Quansah last summer, as part of a deal to send winger Anthony Gordon to Liverpool, but the Reds turned down the proposal.

As Quansah is a homegrown player, the fee Liverpool received from Leverkusen will be recorded as 'pure' profit with regards to profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Quansah came through the Liverpool academy and made 58 appearances for the club, scoring three goals.

He helped the Reds win the League Cup in 2024 and made 13 league appearances last season as Arne Slot's side won the Premier League.

"He has already made an impressive impact in a Liverpool defence dominated by world-class players," said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes.

"With Jarell, our defence gains significant dynamism, pace and toughness in tackling, and he's another very important building block for the future."

Liverpool are interested in Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, amid uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate's future.

The France centre-back has 12 months left on his contract at Anfield and is yet to agree an extension, while Joe Gomez's future is also unclear.

Trying to blame Diogo for reckless driving without any evidence like it was a fact rather then expressing sympathy for a tragic accident is very scummy given the impact on the family. Like its his fault he died cos he was driving recklessly

The police specifically referred to him overtaking a car, a tyre blowout hitting a barrier and ending in a ditch in flames. They never mentioned or probably will never know for certain what speed he was doing (the limit on a A road in Spain is usually 90km an hour). Given it was 12.30 I expect the roads werent busy

As both rothko and myself have found, it is a very scary experience when simply driving in a straight line. God knows what it's like in this scenario. Just the thought of it makes me shudder.

Absolutely Aspro.
Unless you're a racing driver, it'll be very difficult for a layman not to panic in such a scenario when going at speed.

This has really hit hard.
Wiping away tears just thinking about this all.

Q.  Did either of you hit the brake pedal?

I heard not only will that put the car in a spin but likely break your ankle / leg on impact.

I have been told not to brake but try and steer it to a halt and foot off the gas naturally. Instinct is hard to resist but I use it when aquaplaning.

You could see the skid marks on the road which were short, angled and not indicative of careless speeding and heavy breaking.

my friend who works in the motor trade said that lambourginis are very hard to control once they go off course. apparrently they are known for it - no idea if he is right.

its amazing the emotions this tradegy has raised. one of my neighbours who is 75 and a man utd fan told me that he wept when he heard the news and that it reminded him of the Munich disaster in 1958 when he was 8 and it was the only time he saw his father cry. Incredible story and the epitomy of the solidarity and togetherness of football that can bring such emotion even against arch local rivals.

Very humbling.

I too shed a tear on the news and still am in a state of shoke. Just a feeling of total sadness and disbelief. Words cannot expain the tradgedy for the famlty and their friends. Our thoughts and prayers will be forever with them.

I'm a gooner & don't think I'd be less upset if it had been one our players.

The guy's just had the best 2 months of his life: EPL, Nations Cup, married & now gone.

Q.  Did either of you hit the brake pedal?

I can't recall, but more than likely did WD. One thing you never forget is the yank of the steering wheel; you don't get even a microsecond to react, you're already veering.
Report Aspro July 4, 2025 6:48 PM BST
A good tip for anyone reading this. Keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times, especially on motorways or duel carriageways. One handed driving, which so many do, will not save you in a blowout.

A friend of mine smashed her ankle to bits in a head in. Jumped on the brake and the impact went through the pedal. On top of that I have heard if you brake on a blow out it is likely to spin. Hard to fight nature but like I said when aquaplaning or skidding on ice I avoid braking.

Just a suggestion but would like to know from someone with expertise

What struck me was there is so much misery going on around the World with so many innocent people being murdered in War zones, starved to death and generally so many people living in misery juxtaposed to Diogo and his family who had everything and was living a fairytale.

The wedding picture of his wife, his childhood sweetheart and the three children was quite heartbreaking.

As sad as it was, similar experience raise their heads at times like this, which are passed on to others. All for good.
