coley not doing his player by player guide , says his preview will be out next week. for what its worth, carnoustie is a tough links. if you look at results of opens 1968, 75, 99 and 2007 then you get some top links players winning there and also high up board winners gary player, tom watson, paul lawrie, and pod harrington top tens for nicklaus, woods, norman, charles, cink, els, miller, newton, garcia, and leonard. carnoustie is played on euro tour during links championship where its used for one of the 4 rounds. so is well known to the players, although its softer underfoot at that time of year, and course is set up easier as the comp includes amateur celebs. my identikit player will be a good links player, and straight hitter and good putter not asking for much! easier to rule some out, but leaves me 40 or 50ish with a second look required. i like tommy fleetwoods chances, only thing against is he hasnt really looked like winning a major, but his form at carnoustie is outstanding. |
