Newcastle United defender Alex Murphy has joined Bundesliga 2 side FC Kaiserslautern on loan for the 2026/27 campaign.

Alex made his first start for the Magpies in January’s Champions League knockout phase play-off second leg win over Qarabağ FK at St. James' Park.

The 22-year-old, who joined the club’s Academy in 2022 from Galway United, made his Premier League debut during Newcastle's 4-1 win against Chelsea in November 2023. He has made a further six substitute appearances for the Magpies.

He completed a loan move to Bolton Wanderers during the second half of the 2024/25 season, scoring on his full home debut for the League One club.

He now joins a Kaiserslautern side who opened their league campaign with a 0-0 draw against Wolfsburg at the weekend.

Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Alex the very best for the season ahead.

As new head coach Matthias Jaissle continues to run the rule over his new squad, there are a handful of changes to the starting XI from his first match in charge against Valencia.

That includes the introduction of Joelinton, who takes the armband worn by Malick Thiaw in Spain at the weekend.

Lewis Hall also returns to the side, while Yoane Wissa's two goals at Mestalla earn him a starting spot. Anthony Elanga was stretchered off in Spain, but is fit enough to start here.

Lukáš Horníček continues in goal, with Hall slotting into a back line also comprising of Thiaw, Sven Botman and Leo Shahar.

Joelinton joins Aladji Bamba in midfield, with Elanga and Bazoumana Touré on the flanks. Wissa and William Osula are the central attackers.

Yes, Toure looks to have something. La Bamba had an awful start but did a couple of decent things after, looks weak in a full tackle though. Not convinced about the keeper.

Don't think you can set up with 4 forwards and expect to be solid.

You can look at bamba/ Botman, but we should have another body in there to cover these things.
