A date and kick-off time has been set for Newcastle United's Carabao Cup second round tie at home to West Bromwich Albion.

The Magpies were handed a home draw against the Championship side, who claimed a 4-1 away win against Rotherham United in Round One.

It has been confirmed that the game will take place at St. James' Park on Wednesday 26 August, with kick-off set at 7:45pm (BST).

Any further details, including ticket information, will be confirmed on newcastleunited.com in due course.

The 20-year-old makes his comeback after missing the remaining three matches of last season with a fractured fibula - and starts alongside his younger brother, Mason, for the first time at senior level.

Newcastle United can confirm that defender Dan Burn has been appointed club captain ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The England international, a lifelong supporter and former season ticket holder at St. James’ Park, will wear the armband in Sunday’s VisitMalta Weekender friendly against French side RC Strasbourg.

Dan led the side out on five occasions last season, having been a key part of the first-team leadership group.

The vastly experienced 34-year-old is the club’s fourth-highest appearance maker within the current squad and has 11 England caps to his name, including three at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

Dan said: “It’s an absolute honour to be named captain of Newcastle United. It’s always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special.

“It’s been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we’ve achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments. I believe there’s still more to come and I’m relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case.”

Newcastle United's final pre-season friendly of the summer sees them take on Strasbourg at St. James' Park (kick-off 4pm BST) - and Matthias Jaissle has named an entirely different XI to Saturday's narrow defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

The Magpies lost 2-1 here less than 24 hours ago but Jaissle has split his squad, meaning St. James' bows for new signings Ewen Jaouen, Aladji Bamba and Bazoumana Touré.

Fabian Schär returns after he was injured against Bristol City last month while Dan Burn captains the team. He was confirmed as skipper for the season on Saturday.

With Jaouen in goal, youngsters Leo Shahar and Dylan Charlton occupy the full-back berths and Burn partners Schär in central defence.

Bamba, Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey are in midfield with Jacob Murphy and Touré on the flanks. William Osula leads the line.

Rory Finneran - who played the whole of the second half against Leverkusen - is on the bench along with Miodrag Pivaš, Trevan Sanusi, Henry Johnson, Rory Finneran and Sean Neave. Mark Gillespie is the substitute goalkeeper.

IMHO they need a statement signing in midfield to replace Bruno. Someone to get the fans excited. Forget about him leaving in 3/4 years. That will happen and the aim will be profit and a good 3/4 seasons of performance. Forget Hojburg or Palinha.

If they do that then imho they have enough for this season and dont need more signings now They have no European football so squad is adequete and allows for club to regroup for next summer.

You could argue Murphy who's crosses are better but looks to have lost a yard of pace, you could argue Osula to play right wing with Wissa up front? None of those are any good at the high press and all three cannot defend when needed.

Will the hunger be there? Because you can rest assured that all the promoted teams plus those that were in the relegation battle last season will have the hunger to survive.

Lots of clubs won't be at best for first game of season as managing players from world cup, it's a long season.

We've not really had a full team out all pre season but some useful games for fitness.

Saw a young lad yesterday, no56, who did very well, (I wasn't going to game until we got free tickets, lol) and only 34k turned up despite huge waiting list for season tickets.

U18s won 3-1 at weekend, it's kind of a big season for them too, and with new manager, all of a sudden progression looks back on for them.

Four of Newcastle United's upcoming fixtures have been rescheduled in the latest round of Premier League fixture amendments.

The Magpies' trip to newly-promoted Coventry City - initially set for Saturday, 10th October - will now be played on Monday, 12th October, with kick-off set for 8pm BST.

The home game against Aston Villa at St. James' Park on Saturday, 17th October has a new kick-off time, and will now get under way at 5.30pm BST instead of 3pm.

Matthias Jaissle's side then travel to Crystal Palace, with that game now moved back to Sunday, 25th October at 2pm BST because of Palace's involvement in European competition the previous midweek, having originally been scheduled for a day earlier.

And United's match against Everton at St. James' Park, which was set for Saturday, 31st October, has been pushed into November and will now kick-off at 8pm GMT on Monday, 2nd November.

All four games will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Any further alterations to the Magpies' fixture schedule will be communicated at the earliest opportunity.

Newcastle United are delighted to announce the signing of Bosnian international full-back Amar Dedić from Portuguese giants SL Benfica.

The 24-year-old, who will wear shirt number 37, has penned a five-year deal to become the sixth senior addition of the summer at St. James' Park.

Amar has previous experience working with Magpies head coach Matthias Jaissle, playing under his stewardship in Austria during the early stages of his career with both FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg.

Amar said: "It's a special feeling and a really big honour for me to join Newcastle United. I'm really happy to be here and can't wait to start playing for the club and the amazing fans.

"Working with Matthias again was a big factor for me. We know each other well, he knows what I can bring on the pitch and I'm really happy to be playing for him again.

"Playing Premier League football at St. James' Park is going to be really special. Every game feels like a big occasion, with an amazing atmosphere. I'm really excited to get started."

'Defensive and attacking qualities'

Born in Zelle am See, Austria, Amar's early footballing years were spent with LUV Graz and Sturm Graz. He made the switch to Red Bull Salzburg's youth academy in 2015 and went on to sign professional terms there four years later.

He spent time with their feeder squad Liefering, where he first played under Matthias Jaissle, and also enjoyed a loan stint with Wolfsberger AC, before returning to Salzburg to earn his first-team debut and go on to make 95 appearances in all competitions for the club.

Amar had a loan spell with French giants Marseille during the 2024/25 campaign, making 10 appearances in Ligue 1, before joining Benfica on a permanent basis last summer. He featured for the Portuguese side at St. James' Park in last October's UEFA Champions League clash.

Newcastle United have agreed to purchase the land on which they intend to build their new £190million ($259.1m) “world-class” training complex — and hope to move in by the start of the 2029-30 campaign.

The Athletic reported in January that Newcastle had identified land in Woolsington, near Newcastle International Airport, which is five miles north-west of the city centre and near to where many of the first-team players live, as the prime location.

The club have now completed the land-purchase deal for the Woolsington Hall estate, which covers 260 acres south of the airport and include a derelict listed country house and parkland, and will formally apply for planning permission with Newcastle City Council in “early 2027”.

Sir John Hall, a previous owner of the club, purchased the land in 1994 and had intended to build a club academy facility there. Newcastle claim “that vision has been revolutionised” and that “an elite, integrated performance environment (will) be created to deliver sustainable on-pitch success”.

Newcastle intend to “carefully restore” the site and then move their men’s team from their current Benton training ground and the academy from their Little Benton base by the summer of 2029. There is the “flexibility” for the women’s team and their academy to be moved across to Woolsington, too, although Newcastle may retain their present men’s first-team site, renamed “The KNOX” last month, and repurpose it for the women.

“This phased approach ensures investment is both immediate and sustainable,” Newcastle said in a statement. “The club is committed to delivering the project sustainably and responsibly, and will work closely with the local community and local authorities as plans develop.”

“Subject to planning permission, our proposed performance complex will create the world’s best performance environment for our teams,“ David Hopkinson, the club’s CEO, said. ”We’ll develop purpose-built facilities that are geared towards developing sustainable success in the future, where players, coaches and staff can perform at their very best every day.

“We will be submitting a detailed planning application that not only demonstrates our vision, but also how we will preserve and enhance an historic estate, its biodiversity and wildlife habitats, and how we’ll be a great neighbour.”

In the late afternoon of 16 February 1909, a terrifying explosion tore through the Burns Pit at West Stanley in County Durham. Sheets of flame erupted from the pit shaft, while underground, 168 miners were either incinerated instantly or were choked to death by coal dust and carbon monoxide. As was typical in mining disasters, there was no shortage of volunteers prepared to risk their own life and limb to look for survivors. Among the first to brave the collapsed mine was a respected local union official called Frank Keegan. Thanks to the efforts of Frank and his comrades, 26 miners were found in a pocket of clean air and safely brought to the surface. A postcard published after the event shows the volunteers, including the dapper and diminutive Keegan smiling underneath a bowler hat and a mop of dark curly hair, above the caption, “local inspector to whom the 26 rescued men owe their lives.”

Frank’s grandson, Kevin, grew up hearing stories of the heroic acts from his father, Joe, but thought of them as merely exaggerated family lore. The truth of what he had heard only dawned on him while playing for Newcastle United in the Eighties, when he was first shown photographs of his grandfather and his fellow rescuers. And when he returned to Newcastle as the club’s manager in the Nineties, he proudly unveiled a memorial to the disaster.

Born in 1951, Keegan started his career at Scunthorpe United before playing for Liverpool and then Hamburg, where he was affectionately known as “Mighty Mouse”; he, certainly had the muscular physique of a miner, but perhaps courage and tenacity were inheritable too. As one Stanley native explained to me: “Frank Keegan went back into the mine to rescue people. He was a local hero. It ran in the family.” Those qualities defined Kevin’s football as much as his character. He was never the tallest, strongest or most naturally gifted player on the pitch, yet he played every game as though it might be his last: harrying defenders, chasing lost causes, refusing to accept that any contest was beyond saving. “In Keegan we saw a man who had the one thing we wanted, apart from his ability: his natural enthusiasm,” observed his great mentor, the Liverpool manager Bill Shankly.

Matthias Jaissle will hand competitive Newcastle United debuts to three players in Sunday's Premier League opener against Liverpool, with Lukáš Horníček, Amar Dedić and Sean Steur all set to make their Magpies bows.

United entertain the Reds on Tyneside, with tributes to Kevin Keegan - a legendary figure at both clubs - planned ahead of the 4.30pm BST kick-off.

And new head coach Jaissle has opted to give the trio their first tastes of top tier football at St. James' Park on what is also the German boss' first game in charge of the club.

Horníček is in goal, with Dedić lining up in defence alongside Malick Thiaw, who captains the side in the absence of Dan Burn, who misses out with an ankle injury sustained in training and is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks. Sven Botman also starts, as does Lewis Hall.

Teenage midfielder Steur partners Lewis Miley in the middle of the park, with Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes on the flanks and Yoane Wissa further forward alongside Will Osula.

Three more recent arrivals are among the substitutes, with Ewen Jaouen, Aladji Bamba and Bazoumana Touré all poised to make their Magpies bows from the bench.

Fabian Schär and Leo Shahar provide defensive cover, with Jacob Ramsey, Joe Willock and Jacob Murphy also backup options.

Forward Nick Woltemade is also named as Jaissle's side look to kick-off their campaign with a home win.

Former United frontman Alexander Isak is in the Liverpool line-up on his first return to St. James' Park since his departure in the summer of 2025.

The 2 Liverpool full backs look atrocious. Add in Van Dijks lack of pace and playing on the break could work here.

One of these days just one of these days the referee will not play till Liverpool score in injury time We deserved the win unfortunately someone from the gods loves to rub it in against us when we play Liverpool; they say everything evens itself out so if that is the case; we will have a win run against Liverpool for about 10 games. Hopefully that will shut the doom merchants up who never gave us a chance today; thought Wissa was player of the the match and the Elanga goal will give him some confidence as well; a solid start for Dedic as well

To be fair ye could have played rubbish and won the game. The performance mattered and ye got it.

Not one of the young new players looked out of their depth. Bamba even looked great when he came on and Steur played well and both barely have 20 senior games under their belts. The keeper looked great.

Liverpool have serious questions to answer. £125m striker barely had a sniff. Their 100m playmaker hauled off and their 2 full backs wouldn't look out of place in the championship.

Where did they get 5 minutes injury time in first place, and ref had red eyes all game.
Ref started 5 second count down when Hornicek placed ball, but not when Allison placed ball, you take as long as you like son.

Can't really complain about result, but wissa as a 10 was great tactics.

Would have been happy with Desmond last season.

The game is being ruined with soft pens. Its so bad now you have teams using it as a tactic.

I watched Barcelona highlights tonight and yet again you have an attacker knocking it past a defender and running into them and falling for a pen.
