Great point from the True Geordie. Howe has had plenty to spend. He took over with Joelinton, Murphy, Schar in place and then brought in Isak, Bruno, Tonali, Gordon (getting massive backing from the owners).

He leaves with all those players gone and Joelinton, Murphy & Schar still in place.

Its staggering how bad he was at broadening the depth of the squad. You are left with geriatrics like Burn, Murphy, Schar, Joelinton even Livramento all looking like they'll get a hernia reaching for the remote.

2 DOFs in Ashworth and Mitchell left soon after being appointed. Maybe just maybe the beloved they saw something was wrong.

Exactly. The reaction from fans is utterly bizzare. None of them are what I would term world class. Bruno has done the best but he is a limited player. Not the quickest and always struck me he would go missing in tough games against the best teams. Definite badge kisser from the start. He brought his newborn out during the lineup at home to Liverpool one year. No serious club would allow that 5hite.

Tonali has been one giant disaster. The club should thank the heavens Spurs were willing to spend 100m on him. He is a total wet wipe. Everytime he was interviewed on club TV, he had the wife in tow. The fact he was banned for gambling tells you he has issues outside of football.

That leaves the best till last....Anthony Gordon. One of the biggest helmets I have ever seen on a football pitch. The dictionary definition of a stat padder. At one stage he went a full calendar year in 2025 without a single open play goal in the league.
He had just joined the club in 2023 and was playing away at Brentford when Howe subbed him off and he threw a strop. They were 1-0 down and Toney had missed a pen. Muprhy came on and they came back to win 2-1. That should have rang the alarm bells for Howe but alas no. He instead decided to play him as a 9 when Isak left. Probably the worst 9 I have ever seen in a Newcastle jersey. His best position might be left back (Hall is better than him though) as he is so limited attacking wise and just makes direct runs at the full back. He routinely runs in to crowded areas and loses the ball.

We've signed a manager who could be anything, got to give hime 5 years, he's young for a manager, done well so far in lesser leagues but lets not forget that Wenger came from a Japanese club and that Keegan had never managed before, so its a chance worth taking.

Players come and players go, but to let Bruno, Tonali and Gordon go and Ramsdale to return to Southampton, release Trippier and Krafth and then replace them with 4 youngsters, two of which will be no where near the first team this season will make life hard. Obviusly we need to bring in two quality midfielders before the start of the season or we could do a West Ham, who knows. Bring the season on for me and lets see where we stand.
Report steerforth August 5, 2026 4:06 PM BST
All the pessimism is getting hard to take. People are forgetting how bad we were last year, how awful Gordon was game after game, how Tonali hadn't played well for a year, how often Bruno got knocked over, his total lack of pace, his frequent habit of giving the ball away in his own half. His inability to do a captains job and galvanise when we went in front or his volatility in adversity. He is not a leader, I'll never be convinced that he is.
And the icing on the cake is Howe's shocking record with bad team selection, one dimensional tactics, failure to influence outcomes an an absence of tactical nous. The team was shot to bits, the odd win against West Ham, Palace, and (hardly any) others, patched up the points return when we could easily have gone down.
On the flip side we've netted £250m for failing so called stars and got a coach who could be anything, but what he won't be is worse than the Howe/Tindall disaster. They were living on past credit, which I will admit was due, but were totally found out.
We need a strong leader and that should be priority number one to sign asap We might not be winning much any time soon, but I can confidently predict that there is no way we'll be dropping 27 points from winning positions, that we won't be shipping goals every game due to one of the worst goalkeepers I've ever seen, and we'll see some raw talent improve on the complete shambles of the last 18 months.

What I'm not saying is that Bruno Tonali and Gordon were never any good. What I'm pointing out is their failings. Maybe if Gordon had rolled his sleeves up at the Etihad instead of asking to come off, we might have got a bit closer to the final than we actually did. Champions League? We were lucky to be in it because we failed to guarantee the place at home to Everton, a game we should have been so up for, and so set up to win, that defeat could not be contemplated. Thanks to Man U and dodgy refs decision we sneaked it.

Fair enough - Botman in particular worries me to the core of my being. I was singling out the ones that carry the reputation and have moved on.
My view is that we've done well in the trades because what was on display last year wouldn't bear repeating.
As well, we know what they are, and we should never fall into the trap of believing imported footballers are fans. They are hired hands and that's the way the game works.
As for Bruno, there is only one thing worse than the modern mercenary footballer, and that's the modern mercenary footballer who pretends not to be one.

I agree with all of that but it doesn't necessarily exclude failure with what was available. It does set limits but we never got near those limits after the cup win.

From the BBC website: Crazy

Lukas Hornicek, signed earlier this week for £25.7m from Benfica, is expected to be new head coach Mattias Jaissle's new number one, with the highly-rated 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen signed from Reims earmarked as an exciting prospect.

Despite his towering 6 ft 6in frame, 24-year-old Hornicek's ability as a 'sweeper keeper' is one of his valuable attributes.

As shown in the graphic above, he is happy to exit his penalty area. Only five goalkeepers in Europe's top 10 leagues last season recorded more keeper sweepings than Hornicek (45).

The Czech Republic international cleaned up on all 45 occasions, meaning his 100% success rate is only bettered by Barcelona's Joan Garcia (52/52).

Such data points to clear decision making when tricky moments occur around the penalty box.

In the Primera Liga, Opta data shows Hornicek ranked second for successful passes (846) and fourth for passing accuracy (75%) of goalkeepers in Portugal's top-flight last season.

A new number one was a priority for Newcastle this summer and, with an enforced squad rebuild after the departure of Eddie Howe and several key players, a change in goalkeeping style at St James' Park is also very much on the cards.

What exactly did Woltemade or Osula do wrong?  Howe threw Nick under a bus so he could protect his favourite helmet Anthony Gordon. The same Gordon who wouldnt show a semblence of team ethic and give Wolte the 4 pen in the Champions League. Even Trippier was calling him out.

The same Gordon who stat padded through the whole season with Penalties. Awful player on every level. No open play goals in an entire year ffs. AWFUL.

Osula done great and was far better than most of the squad including these big names.

A good manager will rally this squad. Theres a basis of talent there and hopefully a fresh hunger to perform. Howe will end up where he deserves....West Ham or some Championship outfit probably.

Champions League knockout stages for the first time in their history before securing a second consecutive league title and further European progress in the UEFA Europa League.

FIRST INTERVIEW: Watch Matthias Jaissle's introduction here
After joining Al-Ahli, he quickly transformed the side into one of Asia's leading teams, securing qualification for the AFC Champions League in his first season. He leaves after leading the club to back-to-back AFC Champions League titles, becoming the first coach to achieve the feat.

Matthias’ ability to develop players, build resilient, cohesive and high-energy teams, and contribute to elite high-performance environments has distinguished him throughout his coaching career.

Just as importantly, his football philosophy and leadership style are strongly aligned with the direction, ambitions and culture of Newcastle United.

The club’s sporting director, Ross Wilson, said: “Matthias’ leadership style and football philosophy are strongly aligned with our sporting vision. His teams play high-energy football and we could feel his passion during all of our discussions throughout the recruitment process.

“He has consistently demonstrated an ability to improve players, build cohesive teams and create elite performance environments in his coaching career.

“His successes at Salzburg and Al-Ahli underline his ability to deliver results while developing a clear football identity. We believe he is uniquely positioned to build on the strong foundations already in place and help take Newcastle United forward.”

“My teams are built on togetherness, hard work, intensity and a passion to improve every single day. I will bring full commitment, full energy and a determination to give everything I have to help this club achieve its ambitions.

“I believe there is enormous potential within this squad and throughout the football club. I am excited to work with the players, staff and leadership team to help take the club forward.

"I cannot wait to get started and will attack this opportunity. I give my complete commitment and total energy to bringing further success to Newcastle United."

Newcastle tried to run before they could walk.

Instead of signing pricey players like Isak or Tonali, they firstly should have broadened the depth of the squad and spread whatever budget they had out on more players.

Once thats bedded in then you can maybe look at adding a few pricier players to the fold.

Instead you end up with the farcical situation where after 5 years, they have lost Tonali, Isak, Gordon and Bruno and still are left with Willock, Murphy, Joelinton, Krafth etc...

It looks like they now understand this and are correcting the mistake.

It also doesn't help when the manager you had goes on about only signing (Expensive) players with the right "Character". Good managers can deal with all types of characters.

That character would be the 80m gambling addict or the bellend from Everton who in his first few games throws a strop when the manager tries to sub him. The same bellend spent his last season chucking it in the league and learning Spanish.

Newcastle United can announce that Bruno Guimarães has joined Arsenal for an undisclosed fee.

The agreed fee represents one of the top ten highest transfer fees ever received for a player aged 28 or over, and a record fee for a player of his age and position combined.

Bruno departs St. James' Park after making 195 appearances and scoring 31 goals for the Magpies.

Bruno said: "This is one of the toughest decisions of my life. When I arrived, the club was in a challenging position and I am incredibly proud of what we achieved together.

"I fell in love with this place. I really mean that. From my first day, the supporters, my teammates, Eddie and the staff, and everyone connected with the club made me and my family feel at home.

"I thank PIF, our chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and Jamie Reuben for everything they have done for me and for this football club. I also want to say thank you to David and Ross for the huge respect to me throughout this process. They did everything they could to keep me at Newcastle, and I am very grateful for our time together.

"This move is very tough because Newcastle means so much to me, but I wanted to experience something new in my life. I feel ready for a new challenge for myself and my family. I had a very positive conversation with Matthias Jaissle, and I leave knowing the club is in very good hands.

"To the supporters, thank you will never be enough, but I say it with all my heart. I will always be proud to have been part of this club's journey. Thank you for everything."

The club wishes Bruno and his family well.

Report Bish Bosher August 8, 2026 7:01 PM BST
Matthias Jaissle has named his first Newcastle United starting XI as the Magpies take on Valencia at Mestalla Stadium (kick-off 8pm BST).

The new head coach has been working with the squad over the last few days in La Manga, and will now get the opportunity to put some of his ideas into practice in the pre-season clash with Ches Blanquinegros, who finished ninth in La Liga last term.

He hands a debut in goal to Lukáš Horníček, who signed from Braga earlier in the week, while there's a first start in black and white for 21-year-old Serbian defender Miodrag Pivaš.

He arrived on Tyneside two years ago from Jedinstvo Ub and is joined in the backline by Leo Shahar, Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw, who is celebrating his 25th birthday and is named captain.

Lewis Hall isn't risked due to a knock, while Fabian Schär and Alex Murphy are ruled out. Tino Livramento underwent minor surgery earlier in the summer and Dan Burn reports back next week after helping England reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Summer signing Aladji Bamba is paired with Jacob Ramsey in midfield, with Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga occupying wide berths. Nick Woltemade and William Osula will be the central attackers.

Newbottle-born Henry Johnson - a teenage defender capable of playing at centre-half or full back - is named among the substitutes. He signed his first professional contract this summer. Dylan Charlton is also in the squad.

Joelinton, Yoane Wissa, Sean Steur, Bazoumana Touré, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, Rory Finneran, Sean Neave and Mason Miley are the other players hoping to get minutes to impress Jaissle, with the Premier League season kick-off just over a fortnight away. Mark Gillespie and Aidan Harris are the substitute goalkeepers.

Newcastle United: Lukáš Horníček, Sven Botman, Aladji Bamba, William Osula, Harvey Barnes, Malick Thiaw (c), Anthony Elanga, Nick Woltemade, Jacob Ramsey, Miodrag Pivaš, Leo Shahar

Substitutes: Mark Gillespie, Aidan Harris, Joelinton, Yoane Wissa, Sean Steur, Bazoumana Touré, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, Dylan Charlton, Henry Johnson, Rory Finneran, Sean Neave, Mason Miley

Aladji Bamba looks very decent. I do not understand why Woltemade drops so deep. He needs to provide an outlet and numerous times if Newcastle break he is in his own half. He shouldn't be allowed in his own half ffs.

Sickener for Elanga who looked the most lively player until going off.

Elanga was on side VAR would have overturned it Laugh was Osula taken out as well in the penalty box Confused

another match closer to match fitness for the new season and a win for the new manager on his 1st game; like the look of Bamba Toure and Steur; early days I know but winning is a nice habit to get in to

That was good. Got better the longer the game went on. All the new guys looked decent.

A few shrewd signings and the coach gets them all onside and this team could do far better than expected this year. Great to see Wissa dn Elanga up for it.

Only worry is why Woltemade keeps dropping so deep. It needs to be resolved.

First impressions and i know its a friendly but steur looks like he has something about him.Love the way he is always trying to pass forward and to feet of the forwards. Also Toure looks like he has that something different.

When I see that game, I actually get why they are being linked with Hojburg. Hard worker, not afraid to stick a boot in and technically ok.
He brings a backup/replacement for Joelintons physicality and agression when the rest of the midfield is young, not fully developed etc.. 10m is decent for that type of player

The full back needs covering as well. Osula was quiet as well so not all blame on Nick. Its that link up play between the wingers and central attackers thats the hardest to get done. I'd give Jaissle at leats 10 league games to begin to see some sort of progress.

Nick is a 9 imo not a 10. I was just staggered at times where he was on the edge of his own box. Lowest position he should be is just inside his own half. Would love to see him do well but worst case is he is soured by last years treatment and wants out. Genuinely hope not and he has a great season.

If Jaissles tactics are a little less physically demanding than Howes, there may be less injuries etc..

I have said it till i am blue in the face, until we get a proper centre forward we are toothless. All the good wing play and creativity just gets wasted.

Twas only a friendly and against 10 men for half of the game but some pleasing performances from the new outfield players nevertheless.

No sign of Jaouen or Pope with Harris being the keeper on the bench along with the hapless Gillespie? The new keeper didnt look great at all and of course Botman with his usual mistakes. Big Nick still looked lost.

Personally I wouldnt be in a hurry to sell Nick Pope just yet.
