Report Northofperth March 9, 2017 5:17 PM GMT
I had no financial interest in the game , and I have a soft spot for Barca . But I was underwhelmed at the end , because I think the 2nd penalty was a blatant piece of cheating . Suarez , you are a disgrace ( and not for the first time ). We saw a monumental comeback in this year's Superbowl . It was assisted by video playback to decide a call ( Endelman's miracle catch , I hope that's the correct name/spelling ). Last night , video playback would have ruled out the dubious penalty award . With all that cash sloshing around in football , some must be used to fund video technology .
Report Wesdag March 9, 2017 5:36 PM GMT
Incredible that football, the biggest & richest sport in the world, has the worst officiating.
Report Rider March 9, 2017 6:43 PM GMT
had video technology been available barca would have got another pen earlier which wasnt given in the second half (bt commentators said they thought it was a pen)
Report Coachbuster March 9, 2017 6:50 PM GMT
if it was set up then it was remarkable hpow they left it with 5 seconds to spare (with not the easiest of finishes)  Wink

football may be corrupt ,but it's not that scripted to that extent
Report everyone's a winner March 9, 2017 6:54 PM GMT
there's no way this was a fix, it's just one of those rare occasions where a long odds outcome does happen
Report roache March 9, 2017 7:09 PM GMT

Had video technology been available PSG would have had 2 pens that i can remember, the handball in the 1st half and late in the 2nd half when Di Maria was through on goal the same defender (cant spell his name) caught his heels from behind just as he was shooting and thats why the ball spooned up from his shot as he was fouled from behind.
Report Wesdag March 9, 2017 7:15 PM GMT
I don't think most are saying it was fixed, just very poor officiating which heavily favoured Barca.
Report Rider March 9, 2017 7:27 PM GMT
roache, no way was it handball, the ball was hit from a yard away and struck his hand by his side, di maria foul possibly a pen, i wasnt sure at the time but mascherano says today he did foul him though it could be a compatriot wind up, he seems to be the butt of a lot of jokes on twitter, home teams sometimes get decisions but of course psg had that advantage in the first leg
Report roache March 9, 2017 7:49 PM GMT
This will be the problem with video technology just like some refs will have given that incident as handball and a penalty other refs won't stating ball to hand so then it would depend on who reviews the video evidence, the problem with handballs for penalties is that there is too much ambiguity and FIFA really need to sort it out once and for all and come up with some clear rules for handball as the status quo is too much of a lottery or who can scream for a handball the loudest.

would have been a great night for football if the ref had given Suarez a second yellow for diving rather than rewarding him with pen....opportunity missed and cheats will continue to prosper (in fact, hope they go on to win it on the back of that pivotal dive, to really illustrate what a charade it's become)
Report GODSEND March 10, 2017 2:20 PM GMT
How was it a dive? If anything it was consistency, I remember earlier in the match he was given a foul against on marqinous when touching his back with his forearm and the ref gave it
Report wallis March 10, 2017 2:32 PM GMT
People only see what they want Godsend.

Moral of the story is , if you dont want to give away a pen then dont be so stupid as to push Suarez in the back in the penalty area.

Moronic defending and gave the referee a decision to make in a split second. He saw the shove , he saw Suarez go down , he gave the pen.
Report duncan idaho March 10, 2017 2:59 PM GMT
a dozen pens a game then...might as well just have a pen shoot-out at 3pm and go home
Report duncan idaho March 10, 2017 3:18 PM GMT
beggars belief people think Suarez didnt go to ground of his own volition= dive   Crazy
Report Wesdag March 10, 2017 4:02 PM GMT
Cos it gets in the way of a good story.

A 2nd yellow - the game's over.

Little wonder they get so many dubious decisions in their favour.
Report OnePercenter March 10, 2017 4:17 PM GMT
Suarez should have got a 2nd yellow instead of the pen.

PSG's defence was shambolic.
Report Rider March 10, 2017 4:36 PM GMT
how often do defenders go down softly with far less contact than suarez had and no one says a word? one touch and they go over particularly when they are shielding the ball facing their own goal anywhere in the last third of the pitch, its seen as good defending
Report OnePercenter March 10, 2017 6:08 PM GMT
I'm afraid defending Suarez's cheating is a losing game.
Report Rider March 10, 2017 7:01 PM GMT
what you should ask yourself is would a penalty be given if the attacker doesnt go down?

no

ask any striker and they will tell you 9/10 you can stay on your feet

so what should they do, stay on their feet or try to win a penalty for the club that pays them millions?

doh, they do what every other player trying to win a game of football would do, give the ref a decision to make

so looking at the suarez penalty

was there contact from the defender? yes
did the player go down? yes

its now up to the referee whether its a penalty, he gave it, he didnt give the more obvious one on messi earlier (for which real madrid man SM said was a pen)

if he doesnt give it some people think its automatically a yellow card, wrong, its a yellow card only if there is no contact coming from the defender
Report thelatarps March 10, 2017 7:36 PM GMT
PSG were weak
The ref was weak

There was the exact same incident in the game about 10/15 mins before it where Suarez barely touched Marquinhos with his arm and he went down.

Marquinhos for the penalty panicked as he was caught wrong side and without looking at ball tried to get across Suarez. Arm across him and slight contact with leg.

Sanchez went down easily but there was contact and Marquinhos **** up gave him chance to win the pen.

So he plays the game, lets barca win.
He gets the tin tack
Imagine the holy sh!t storm had he given suarez a second yellow, as i think most of us here would have wanted to see?
