It looks very bleak according to Medellín Police Gral. José Acevedo: "We think there are 75 dead"

if that's the case then most if not all of the team are dead as only 81 on board

Chapecoense, the Brazilian team on board the plane that has crashed in Colombia, were in the middle of a fairytale season before the tragedy struck.

Live Colombia plane crash: 76 killed, 5 survivors from plane carrying Chapecoense footballers – latest

This should have been the most glorious week in the history of the club. Associação Chapecoense de Futebol, relative small fry in the ecosystem of Brazilian football, were flying to Colombia to take part in their first continental final when the plane crashed carrying 81 people, 76 of whom have died.
Report BARNEY15C November 29, 2016 1:08 PM GMT
Virtually the whole team wiped out. Brazil's Man Utd tragedy. Awful.
Report sixtwosix November 29, 2016 2:56 PM GMT
Very sad story .
Torino lost their entire squad except an injured player in 1949 on Superga , they had won the last 3 Serie A titles and in 1946 , 10 of their players represented Italy in a single match.
Medellin is featured heavily in the drama Narcos about Pablo Escabar.

This ForçaChape twitter page has some heartbreaking photos. https://twitter.com/hashtag/For%C3%A7aChape?src=hash

Amongst others there is a short video of one the players (20 years old) being told he is going to be a father, taken just a few days ago...really makes it hit home even harder.

Nacional have asked Conmebol to declare Chapecoense champions

Truly heartbreaking story. Great gesture from Atletico National. Chapecoense had an Argentinian striker who was injured so didn't travel. How the hell must he be feeling???

Great gestures all round.

This game which was due  tomorrow  is  the same as   our Europa League final

This plane was used for Argentina i believe yeah?

Remember Messi complaining about the facilities

During the tournament, Messi labelled them a ‘disaster’ due to their lack of organisation and professionalism which resulted in the team staying in poor accommodation with sub-par facilities.

In the caption below, he said: “"Once again waiting in an airplane to take off...  What a disaster the AFA is, for God's sake".

Terrible tragedy. RIP.
Report BARNEY15C November 29, 2016 9:19 PM GMT
But Messi probably expected to fly club class on an Airbus or 747, his compatriots were used to roughing it having much more humble expectations.

Just horrible news - it was great to see Chape doing so well - this is tragic. The club has asked that people still attend the stadium at match time for a candle lit vigil. Nice gesture and Nacional's gesture is excellent. RIP

I swore I would never fly again after all the cost-cutting and my last trip to the US. It just occurred to me when I was last over the Atlantic, there was nowhere to go if anything went wrong. Maybe you get a bit scared as you get older. I think this will happen more and more now. That said, my heart goes out to the relatives, what a horrible way to go. Rest in peace, all.

Something about a plane crash that is worse than the thousands dying every day, it just kills me.

The plane which crashed in Colombia killing most of a Brazilian football side had run out of fuel, according to a leaked audio recording.

A pilot can be heard repeatedly requesting permission to land due to an electric failure and lack of fuel.

The leaked conversations between the flight crew and a Colombian air traffic controller give a glimpse of the frantic, final moments of the doomed plane.

The pilot and can be heard warning of a "total electric failure" and "lack of fuel".

Just before the tape ends, he says he is flying at an altitude of 9,000ft (2,743m). The plane slammed into a mountainside near the Colombian city of Medellin late on Monday.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFm5aOJbiSQ Beautiful show of support from Nacional fans in Medellín tonight.Skip to 1:50 the announcer says "Football doesn't have borders, support to Chapecoense and the people of Chapeco".Over 50,000 Nacional fans then sing vamos, vamos Chape

http://www.ole.com.ar/futbol-internacional/Piloto-permeable_0_1697230311.html Recordings have been leaked to the Colombian media.Evidently the cause of the crash was pilot error.

The plane was flying at its absolute maximum distance, without enough additional fuel.
Aparently, it should never have been allowed to take off from Santa Cruz in the first place due to the distance.

They were forced to do wait at Medellín airport due to another plane reporting mechanical difficulties.Looks like the pilot failed to convey the severity of their situation to the controller until just before they crashed.

Report Davy December 1, 2016 5:02 PM GMT
Apparently Kaka and David Villa too.Brazilian clubs have offered to loan players to Chape and have submitted a proposal to CBF that would see them exempt from relegation for three years.
Report scandanavian_haven December 1, 2016 5:10 PM GMT
They should be exempt as a mark of respect but also because it will take the m 3 years to rebuild their squad properly.

Brazilian club Chapecoense have been awarded the Copa Sudamericana by South American football confederation Conmebol after most of their team died in a plane crash en route to the final.

Colombian opponents Atletico Nacional, who asked for Chapecoense to be awarded the trophy, have been given a Fair Play award to acknowledge their "spirit of peace, understanding and fair play".

Chapecoense will be given the $2m (£1.57m) in prize money while Atletico Nacional will receive $1m (£787,000).
Report Wakeley Gage December 5, 2016 7:09 PM GMT
So Nacional's great gesture will cost them 1 million dollars. Good on them, some things are worth more than money...
Report tobermory December 5, 2016 7:12 PM GMT
Incredible seemingly they just filled up with the fuel necessary for the journey to save money , only had a reserve worth about 10 minutes.

Another plane had a problem so they were told to stay in the air for that 10 minutes
Report scandanavian_haven December 5, 2016 7:13 PM GMT
not just that, Chapocoense get into the Main Continental cup next season as winners.
Report Wakeley Gage December 5, 2016 7:25 PM GMT
Nacional had already qualified for the Libertadores anyway.
