And you say Bolasie is of that level, what level are Everton aspiring to be? A bottom half Premier League side? Of course we don't aspire to be a bottom half team but it's hard for clubs like Everton and Liverpool to attract players who will get you into the top 6. When you think of some of the players Liverpool signed in the last few years it shows how easy it is to fall into the Bolassie trap. Borini, Alberto, Aspas, Ilori, Lambert, Markovic, Moreno, Balotelli and Benteke cost a total of £100M and with one exception, unless you were a Liverpool fan you wouldn't know what's happened to them. They spent another £150M on Lallana, Firmino, Sakho, Sturridge, Coutinho, Mignolet, Can, Lovren, Origi & Clyne and finished EIGHTH last season. Getting value is not as easy as it seems. |

There will always be the odd "wonder goal" for that style of player because the 1 in 50 times he runs with the ball and comes up with a goal at the end of it it will look world class, until you realise he does that like once a season.

As bad as many Liverpool signings were, some of those you put in the bad pile weren't as bad as this.
Benteke, not really good enough for a top, top team, and especially the way Klopp is trying to play, but isn't actually that bad, he will go back to looking very good again if he goes Crystal Palace. Most the other terrible buys were at least relatively cheap bar Carroll. There was a lot of them being the bigger problem. You're never going to get any value buying from other Premier League teams, because no Premier League team has any pressure to sell so can just demand a top price for all their players. And the whole idea of "proven in the Premier League" is overrated anyway, Liverpool bought half their flops from other Premier League clubs. |

Miss W... not quite sure why you are lumping Liverpool and Everton together tbh.... One club has fared significantly better than the other for a significant period of time. And whilst I understand your point, I don't think the two are comparable in terms of their pull.

I'm comparing the two clubs because Liverpool have spent very heavily over the past few years and achieved relatively little - is it just a League Cup in the last 10 seasons? Bolassie is an example of Everton spending heavily and getting poor value as you correctly pointed out earlier in the thread - and you would know! I've lost count of the number and type of players that both clubs have been linked with but can very rarely persuade to join. Like it or not we both have to make do with second or third tier performers. The main difference is that we have accepted our place in the pecking order whereas many Liverpool fans (present company excepted, of course) are still delusional. |

You can still go places on a budget, just Liverpool spent a lot of that money very poorly under Dalglish and Rodgers. I mean Liverpool almost went to the title and likely would have if the supporting cast around Suarez, especially defensively had been a little better.
But tbh nearly all the top Premier League teams are guilty of wasting money in recent times, it's a major factor why the teams haven't performed to the level they should have in Europe relative to the amount of money they are spending (the other main factor being weak tactically, which you'd expect to change with the level of managers that have arrived in the Premier League in the past year). |
