well David Sullivan reckons Payet is worth 3 times what they paid for him, making his value £30m, Sterling would cost more than that
You wouldn't get £30M for Sterling.

The thing for me is on the right he'd get into real dangerous areas of the pitch more often, closer to the goal down that side. He's not a player either side you want to see stuck to the flanks trying to cross the ball.
You ideally want him using his pace then cutting in and picking out someone in box/linking with a team mate to get into the box himself. The percentages would favour this scenario massively on his proper side. There would still be the issue of his composure but that's when you could really judge him at this level.
I don't know at exactly what point he was considered a left sided player, i must have dreamed of him on the right for liverpool

He's a good outlet and ball carrier one of the fastest players in the tournament. I'd still have him the team than not. He's one of the reasons why we looked so fast and dynamic last night.
What we lacked though is that German like clinical precision when putting the ball in the net.

We all know Sterling aint the greatest technically!
He is in the team because of pace and possibly carrying the ball here and there.
If he were to score a hat-trick he would need to composed\clinical and have 10 chances and\or shooting against Mignolet.

1TP when i'm saying vlinical, cutting edge i'm on about the final ball that should lead to a good chance. I mentioned we didn't create enough good chances from the balance of play.
The suggestion these players don't have the ability to play such a ball after the quality of some of the build up and knowing them for the domestic league is not on.When an average ball can't be made to create a chance it suggests a lack of composure more often than not.
Do we have enough players that have the bottle in these situations where it counts? In other tournaments including the last WC I thought we were horrific quality wise on the ball, last night i thought the quality was in spells very good.
Granted the opposition was not great but the keeping of possession (they did try to press) and tempo were better than i am used to watching us in tournaments.

striding , I think we will find out Russia are extremely moderate. The superlatives poured on England was ridiculous. Sterling is not international class. Sturridge is a far better player.

as ive posted before the difference between england and the big teams is that the full backs ,midfielders of the big teams are trying to get messi, ronaldo, muller etc on the ball in the last 3rd,we,re using or best players rooney, ali, etc trying to get walker and rose on the ball in the last 3rd ,we can have as much passing bright play as you like but 95% of the time it ends up with aimless balls into the box from in world terms 2 journeymen fullbacks, bit like alves having a 1000 crosses a season for barca and creating 1 goal

1st time , that's right. Rooney played well but he can't do what Wilshere offers. We really need the latter AND Vardy. I would even play Vardy if it meant Kane on the bench. but as you say the star finishers need the supply.

in defence of Sterling at least he does try and have a go.. that is take the ball and run at the opposition albiet it didn't come off for him yesterday, i agree.

If sterling and llananananananaaaa start against wales it proves roy is well past it there is no point having pace if u don't pass the ball and find space to use it llannanananananananana is nothing but a poser of a footballer who likes flicks and tricks but again no end product.

Sterling has the yips and he also has the habit of giving away needless free kicks. Had Welbeck been fit he wouldn't have played and it's debatable whether Oxlade Chamberlain would have took his place too. Andros Townsend should be in the squad.

Some reports today suggest that the same team may be selected for the Wales match; if so, and not a mis-leek, then definitely bus fare home time: and even a win should result in the same journey for some/one.

Don't often big up England but was one of the best matches I've seen them play.....Before the game Rooney and Stirling would never have got anywhere near my squad but thought they played well and we were very unfortunate not to win the match easily.....Don't agree with going negative when the team is in such control so would have bought Vardy on instead of Milner but I'm not in charge.....they surprised me...

Sterling has come out and said to the press he feels like the most hated player in England at the moment. Confidence must be low. It's a shame as I thought a few years ago he was going to be one of our brighter talents. The whole Liverpool business seems to have some how effected him ?

I dont think it is the acrimonious transfer to City that is the problem.
The lad simply inst top class , he is on a par with Shaun Wright-Phillips , just a decent player.
His reputation was gained when Liverpool had Suarez in attack, maybe the one of the worlds top 3 strikers ...causing absolute panic and mayhem week in week out.
Defences had to forget about Sterling from time to time ...giving him loads of space to run and dribble with space aplenty.
He looked fantastic.
Take the Suarez factor out and then you find out his true ability .

Sterling is the only winger in the squad (for whatever reason). Therefore he is pretty much guaranteed to play a lot in this tournament regardless of ability / form etc

Surely Man city have players of quality that would have allowed him to play his best at City? A poor season by their standards and he is low in confidence consistently playing down the left, from what i've seen and i keep banging on about it, he has a poor left foot and that will almost certainly always be the case.
I'm not buying this he needs suarez idea, sturridge was getting this too and his scoring ratio has been right up there without him too when fit. I'm not comparing these 2 either, one is a prolific natural goal scorer and the other struggles to maintain composure but was getting plenty of chances and causing plenty of problems for the opposition.
Personally I think Sterling is being made the scapegoat now, it's gone too far.

I just think Kane has been poor by his standards for the last 2 games, rubbish movement, caught offside when he should have been more aware. It's all right blaming everyone else but he has not played with a zest or intelligence needed in a tournament like this in last warm up game or the Russia game. I think looney people like Wright and Shearer also mentioned this (what would they know about forward play) but Sterling is getting all the flack.
But we can just say it's down to Sterling and not look elsewhere.
A scapegoat for England failing to be clinical is what i was referring to.

OnePercenter, I'm not sure Rashford has any experience of playing out wide. Not really as simple as being able to run fast. The same could be said for Vardy and he only seems to be half the player if he isn't played up front. Wingers still need to have a basic understanding of how to play the position, especially helping out defensively, especially at this level
Ashley Young should be in the squad - he can play either wing or either fullback and would be the best set-piece taker. They could have left the redundant Bertrand at home

You just can't believe how that performance has been described. Playing a weak team weakened even further by the loss of two or three decent players, we've scored from a free-kick and our centre-forward has been completely anonymous. I think stridingedge is right - although he can't be blamed for other people's failure to provide any fodder, Kane has looked pretty listless, hardly surprising given his workload over the last eighteen months, and should be taken out of the fray. Also, if you leave your best player - Wheelchair - on the bench, you're a mug. I will give Roy the benefit of the doubt as it was the first game, but if that geezer even dreams we can win a game that matters without JW in the side, he needs shooting.

sterling has always been over hyped like most ordinary young england players (alli, rashford, etc.) but most get found out eventually.
england can never accept defeat and always look for somebody to blame (remember beckham effigies being burned) so somebody will always be pointing a finger rather than admit the team just isn't good enough.
it does surprise me that roy is picking players who aren't even first team players, and players who couldn't handle pressure, instead of players who showed determination, ability and battling qualities all season.
better to pick players in form than just pick your mates and a few media picks. after all, that same media will turn on you the instant it all goes wrong.

I reckon Rooney will be pushed up into the left hand forward position and probably Wilshere will come into midfield so Dier can go more man to man v Bale.
As for Sterling, the over-reaction on here after one game continues to not surprise at all.
I fully accept I would say this but I'd start Sterling-Sturridge-Lallana as a front 3. They know each others' games well and it has echoes of 18 months ago when it was Sterling-Coutinho-Lallana as a mobile front 3 for Liverpool which looked really good. Sturridge is our best striker. He just is. He's better than Kane, Vardy and anyone else you'd care to mention. Lallana is just a great team player but is also talented, can create and get on the end of things. Had 2 good efforts saved v Russia. And while Sterling is being pilloried the lad still has amazing pace and great ability and can turn things in an instant.
For all the talk of Sterling here (how we love our scapegoats) I thought Kane was very poor. I'm not overly concerned if he gets another start (in fact I couldn't give a toss really) but if I was picking the team he wouldn't be in it.

The trouble with playing both Sterling and Lallana is that neither of them have sufficient end product. If the other frontman has a nightmare, as Kane did the other night, we're in $hit street.
The Man City fans who've watched him all season are less than impressed with Sterling for all the same reasons that people on here want him out of the team. He is most effective as an impact sub as in the recent friendly.
Whoever he drops, I agree that Sturridge must surely start tomorrow as he is the one with the composure in front of goal.
If Roy suggests starting with the same team he should be sacked on the spot.

Sturridge is good at finding space, it's weird at times it's like the other players just don't see where he's going and then he's in on goal. Kane has been superb for Spurs for 2 seasons, a great finisher no doubt but he has to do more than the last couple of games in terms of offering himself and his movement.
Whatever Roy does, I want to see him make changes if it's obvious something isn't working. We can't have another game where the forward seems virtually non existent.

I see the point in that. I think Lallana does have an end product and could easily have had a couple but his scoring record for us isn't the best all things considered.
I just think in terms of a front 3 as a unit, it could work better.

Makes sense to me too O4K, but then i would say that as well.
Would help Sterling too, they played plenty together and were good at linking for club.
LaLa would be in the next bracket of player IF he produced the end product he promised. I actually think he is more consistent for England but his scuffed dragged shot the other night just speaks volumes to me.

If my club could sign either Kane or Sturridge I would want Kane all day every day. Yes Sturridge is more naturally gifted than Kane but then again so is Ravel Morrison. Kane is a mentally strong player who hardly misses a game whereas even Klopp has questioned Sturridge's courage. It is just a pity Kane's form has dipped a little lately.

Outpost his job is to score goals with or without suarez he scores goals at a fantastic rate when fit.
I suggest you go back and look at the goals he scored in that season put in by gerrard/coutinho/sterling/henderson and of course suarez. he was lethal 1 on 1 and usually is.
I've nothing against starting with kane again, but if he's as redundant in this game after an hour he should be subbed, for all he's done in the league he has to prove it at this level in a tournament, I think he can and i hope he does but he's offered nothing in the last 2 matches, looked out of sorts to me.

Vardy is a sub for me later in the game especially if the opposition need to commit (like the russian game). He is much better when playing it longer imo and if there is space to run into he becomes a very dangerous player.

Kane didn't play well. He and Sterling were England's worst players. Everyone else played well, (granted Hart had nothing to do) particularly Alli, Rooney and Walker. Alli is England's best player, he makes the game look so simple, and you will see in the next few years what a good player he is. Already England's best player since Scholes, Becks and Gerrard. The difference is Kane has been playing well all season, so he's worth another chance. Sterling hasn't. As for why he is in the team, he's the only winger and the system suits him. His confidence is shot, for which the ex Liverpool players who hounded him thanks to the media must take some credit. At the end of England's qualifying campaign he looked England's best player so it has nowt to with Suarez making him look good.

The 'safe' widemen who rarely get to the byline or rarely take on their opponent and who can always hide behind the fact that they work hard get a relatively easy time from the critics.
Whereas the widemen who take risks get slaughtered every time the risk doesn't come off or if they are having a bad game. This is the English way.

Wingers have disappeared from the game.I saw George Best(amazing),Eddie Gray,Jimnmy jonstone,John Robertson,Steve Heighway etc etc.A typical wingman now, get's the ball, turns back and either passes infield or back, the ball ends up too often with the centre half. You go from a one on one winger v full back situation to nothing.Chance to create a goal has gone. Its all about possesion nowadays, especially since Barcelona emerged. Not surprised English teams have got worse in Champs League.Last proper side we had in champs League was Man Utd ....with width.Need to be more direct, more width,...maybe Ranieri knows! Sterling is clueless on the left,he just doesn't have the footballing brain to see things. If hes going to play then shove him on the right, hes right footed!tell him to beat full backs and get a cross in..its not rocket science for him that way.
