Kirk Broadfoot, 20, a St Mirren defender, was facing a jail sentence last night after he and John Barr, 24, both of Drongan, Ayrshire, were convicted of attacking a man and breaking his jaw in a post-match brawl in August 2003. Broadfoot assaulted Thomas Roney after watching an amateur game. Sentencing was deferred until next month. He got community service for that after his manager spoke up for him while the victim got a metal plate in his face. He got off on a later assault charge on a 'not proven' verdict and once was injured while microwaving an egg. |

What is wrong with being a loyal UK citizen?
We have been bombed by all sorts over the past 30 years in London and it is natural for people to be bitter about scum murdering innocent people including women and childeren. The real bigots and vermin are the people who murder innocent UK citizens. The Irish hate the Brits for historic reasons and about time these people sang the National Anthem or head to pastures new where they can be happier. |

He told McClean that Rangers never died in 2012. The FA had to make a stand against such an insane statement.
They also inserted a confidentiality clause to save Broadfoot from being pointed at and laughed at by the general public. At least no more than usual. |

This may come as a surprise to you but the English are under no obligation to like anyone from Ireland, or indeed Scotland. If Broadfoot made this clear to Mclean I don`t think it should give us pause for concern...the English are a tolerant nation but Mcleans behavior shames not England but himself, his family and his own country. |

I have no problems with anyone from our 4 Nations who are loyal to Queen and country. Maybe McClean would be happier playing for one of the plethora of Dublin teams. If he is happy to take English money then he should show more respect for our traditions, culture and tolerance towards people who come to live and work here. The way McClean is carrying on, you would have thought the UK people let the Irish starve to death during the potato famine not saved them. |

ffs lads I'm a ex squaddie but if you look where the lad comes from all he is doing is being respectful to his community where no doubt he has family and furthermore will settle once his career is over.
while his views differ from mine I respect his stance knowing full well he will be slated,quite a brave individual who if I was going into battle I would like someone like him by me side. cut him some slack ffs. |

He is only brave because he is living and working in England...would it be so safe for an English footballer to behave in such a way in Dublin or some of the more bloodthirsty parts of Belfast or Derry.
He would not be so bold and impertinent if living in Germany or France, China, Russia or most other countries....it is bad manners if nothing else to presume on the good nature of the English. |

Vlad - makes valid points. The people in Derry City have little tolerance for the British flag. Maybe McClean would be better off playing in the US. Or maybe he should do what other catholics do when playing for Northern Ireland who lower their heads when the anthem comes on. Don't have to turn ur back and create hassle for urself

He is quite entitled to go and play football in any country in the world, however while he is in the US, or Dublin, or Spain or Russia he is duty bound to respect that countries flag...it is hypocritical, cowardly and dishonest to take the stance he does.

We all know the reasons and he is quite entitled to have those views, he is not entitled to disrespect a nations national anthem...it is a problem for England in that kindness can be mistaken for weakness....an Englishman in Derry, or Belfast or Dublin would not be so sure or arrogant.

As an ex-squaddie who was in NI the year after Bloody Sunday and someone who lives close to Birmingham where more innocent lives were lost I must admit I'm biased and had, and have, no respect whatsoever for the IRA and their affiliates. I also support the team he now plays for.
I do however respect Irish people, and Ireland, in general and would not think of demeaning their flag or national anthem. Time has passed and McLean is doing more harm than good by his stance. |

ps my tour was west belfast when the gibralter 3 were shot by the SAS and furthermore their funeral was attacked ........not to mention the 2 lads who left my base and went into the back of a funeral cortage and were killed for their troubles.
