The Blyth Spartans story for me was the best ever..non League..
Blyth Spartans have reached the first round proper of the FA Cup 31 times; the second round 14 times; the third round 4 times, the fourth round once and the fifth round once. Blyth reached the fifth round of the FA Cup in 1977–78. Having beaten Chesterfield and Stoke City (who had recently been relegated from the top flight) in the second and fourth rounds respectively, they managed to beat Enfield, another non-league club, in the 3rd round. The club were then drawn to play away at Wrexham (whose victory over Newcastle United denied Spartans a tie against their North East neighbours) where they drew 1–1. The replay took place at Newcastle United's St James' Park where, watched by a crowd of 42,167, Blyth eventually went out, losing 2–1,[2] meaning they missed out on a home tie with Arsenal. In 1980, Blyth played Hull City in the 2nd round which saw two replays, the final of which was played at Leeds United's Elland Road. Blyth's next memorable cup run came in their first season as a Northern Premier League Premier Division club in 1995–96, when they travelled to high flying Division Three side Bury and won 2–0. In the second round, Blyth again were on their travels this time to Division Two side Stockport County where they lost 2–0. In 1997–98 under the managership of John Burridge, Blyth travelled to Second Division side Blackpool. A memorable game saw Blackpool run out 4–3 winners with a last minute winner. It was 11 years before Blyth reached the 1st round again, but finally in 2008–09 Blyth hit the cup trail again. Qualifying round wins against Whitby Town, Buxton and Sheffield FC saw Blyth reach the first round for the first time since 1997. A home tie against League Two promotion chasers Shrewsbury Town saw Croft Park host league opposition for the first time since 1981. The result matched the occasion as Blyth ran out comfortable 3–1 winners.[13] The second round saw Blyth travel to League Two strugglers AFC Bournemouth, who included Darren Anderton amongst their players. A hard fought 0–0 draw on the South Coast saw Blyth take Bournemouth back to Croft Park, where Ged Dalton put Blyth through to the third round with a last minute winner. Both games were shown live on Setanta Sports.[14][15] In the third round, Blyth played Premier League opposition competitively for the first time in their history when they welcomed Blackburn Rovers to Croft Park. In a game again covered live by Setanta Sports, Blyth fell to a 1–0 defeat with the only goal coming via a direct free kick from Chilean player of the year Carlos Villanueva in the 59th minute. A win would have ensured a tie with North East neighbours Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.[16][17][18]  |

Royal Engineers 0 Old Etonians 1. The Engineers were massive favourites for the semi-final tie in 1891, having won the two league matches between the two teams by an aggregate score of 17 goals to 0. The posh schoolkids were 80/1 in London bookmakers Ladbrokes of the Grove to triumph on the day, and most pundits were predicting a comfortable Engineers victory. Uunfortunately for them, the resident tipster in the London Standard, Mr Munn E Tree, tipped up a Royal Engineers landslide, telling readers to "lump on" and coining the phrase "free money". Thus jinxed, Royal Engineers choked, and fell to a surprising 0-1 defeat.

Yesterdays wins for me .and i DO remember Coventry,Woking and Altrincham etc
recently non league Luton beat top flight Norwich away,although a makeshift Norwich team. - so in terms of league difference that eclipses yesterday . But that doesn't account for a lot . I think most folks reasoning is that Chelsea are way beyond average Premier league ,material - they're like Premier league plus - also, the Chelsea team of today would wipe the floor with the old 70s Leeds side for example,possibly by 3 or 4-0 , teams are MUCH more professional now and sourced from wider afield ,whereas lower league teams are still working on pretty much the old framework . Plus ,they scored 4 after being 2 down . So yes,yesterdays result was the biggest ever and probably by some distance - the only thging that takes the shine off it though is commitment . were Chelsea commited enough in the same way Leeds ,Coventry or Newcastle might have been all those years ago ? As for Wimbledon v Liverpool ,what the fook are BBC on ? Wimbledon were a decent top flight team ,not a non league side |

I was at the York V Arsenal game, 30 years ago this week. Around 200 York fans helped clear snow from the pitch to ensure the game went ahead.
Arsenal wanted the game postponed and Don Howe told the ref to 'go have a coffee and cigar and come back next week' (allegedly). Charlie Nicholas' mullet was the highlight of the Gunners side and Keith Houchen scored a last minute penalty to send the York fans wild. Drew 1-1 with Liverpool in the next round too. Happy days |
