Undeniably an all time great, carried Liverpool for many years and would probably be in their top 2-3 greatest ever players.

Might not have won a league medal but won everything else and is the only player to score in the final of the champions league, UEFA Cup, FA cup and league cup.

Obviously time has caught up with him and he's declined in recent years but for a good few years (especially 2004-2009) he was one of the worlds best.

Funny, the last award you put up there - MOTM in the Cup final. This was the same cup final that Liverpool, with supposedly an all-time great midfielder in their midst, were losing to a Championship side until the last minute. One lucky strike later, the rest of the game is forgotten.

I would say Gerrard, however great or not so great you think he is, does hold one unique distinction. he is the only player I can remember who can be blamed almost entirely for his team not winning the League. One moment which changed the entire season, down to Gerrard. And please don't say they wouldn't have been in that position but for him, because Suarez put them in that position, as this season has proved.

England have always tried to shoe horn the eleven biggest names into a side to the complete detriment of everyone. Nothing any of our players have or haven't done in an England shirt over the last few decades makes any difference to my assessment of them as players.
Report jed.davison January 3, 2015 7:06 PM GMT
Well he got Argentina to the World Cup final last year, and he will play - hopefully - in another World Cup. But your broad point is true, he generally hasn't done what he can do in an Argentina shirt.

You could argue Lampard's case, no doubt. I do think however that he contributed massively to the England cause between 2003-2007, much more than Gerrard ever did.

As for the shoehorning argument, the real problem is that people were picked to play International football - to which they were entirely unsuited - on the strength of their performances in the Premier League, when the two are totally different tests of a footballer. And of course that England have been managed exclusively by idiots since Venables stepped down.

In 2004, Gerrard would have been about the fifth or sixth best player in the Premiership at the very best. Vieira was at his best in that year and the couple of years around that time. It is absolutely preposterous to suggest that Gerrard was a better athlete, more skilful, more influential and more anything than Vieira was at this time. Vieira had also contributed significantly to the French Euro 2000 victory. The only real debate was whether Vieira or Keane was the best player in Gerrard's part of the team. Henry and Pires, the maestri of the Invincible Arsenal team, were absolutely at their best in 2004

Greatness comes in no more easily measured factor than achievement. In 2004, when you claim that Gerrard was the best player in the world, while he was running around like Michael Brown on meth for Liverpool, Vieira Pires and Henry were doing the business on a much grander scale - an unbeaten top-flight season, the first in 116 years, in a beautiful style all of their own.

Gerrard also played like a prize lemon in Euro 2004. The back pass to Henry to give the French the equaliser when we're 1-0 up in the last minute was a great moment for the best player in the world at the time. In that tournament, even among his teammates, Gerrard was outshone by an 18-year-old.

So Zidane is wrong I'm afraid. However good he may have been.
