Ok i am going to get replies saying you do whatever you have to do to ensure you win and i can accept that but his antics during last nights penalty shoot out where a disgrace. He was going on like a schoolyard bully, i guarantee he would not have gone on that way have it been Zidane stepping up or someone like Duncan Ferguson. Then why the referee allowed him to continue with these antics throughout the whole shootout is a joke, then much better for FIFA to have Holland in the semi finals rather than Costa Rica (Argentina v Costa Rica hardly has the glamour of Argentina v Holland).
His antics left a real sour taste here and i am praying they get what is coming to them, i can't decide whether i would like Argentina to do them or maybe it would hurt them more if the Germans done them in the final, either way i now have an interest in the rest of the comp and it is praying that prick does not get a winners medal.

Clearly it would be worse for the Dutch if the lost to their age old foes Germany. People who think England-Germany is any kind of rivalry have no idea.
Not to mention it would be their 4th World Cup Final defeat

krul iwould give it to zidane, he doesnt care who it is
i can see you are clearly partial from your pic donny but you're entitled to your opinion
Maybe England players should try a bit more antics during a penalty shoot out and we might actually win one.
im not saying its right, but he has done it before
him and van persie have history
him and van persie have history
Did it to Stevie G too.
Not that it bothered Gerrard of course.

wasn't the most edifying behaviour
but thought the actual dutch pen takers were clinically efficient

agree with that, thought their pens where excellent
All three penalty shoot outs so far have been excellent penalty taking. But Dutch right up there, especially given their record in previous shoot outs.
Classless. Not just Krul, either. Hope the Argies smash them.
i know they didn't look great last night but with Robben flying around with seemingly boundless reserves of energy & continually posing threats i just have a feeling they're gonna see off messi & his boys & what's more i just can't see germany not beating brazil
so,in summation not only will we have the 1st non S American side win in SA
but we will have a european final 2 boot

i have the reverse opinion, think it was always going to be brazil arg in final
Great comparison-Zidane and Duncan Ferguson
psychology won that shoot out,Van Gal by making that substitute,Krul was in the Costa Rican heads the moment he came on the pitch.

Nothing to do with psychology - well taken penalties by Holland - less so by Costa Coffee
of course it was but Man Utd fans will convince themselves it was all to do with Louis Van Gal's decision making
The hate van gall is getting is something similar to what fergie would get
i can sense the FEAR setting back in already

football, or should I say professional football, as a sport needs to decide whether or not it wants to define and enforce a set of boundaries on acceptable behaviour on the pitch
if not then it risks becoming increasingly ridiculed and alienating viewers
So, do you want to allow diving, feigning injury, signalling to refs with the invisible card, intimidation, encroachment, shirt pulling and many others to continue or not? Do these behaviours represent the values the sport wishes to associate itself with?
If the answer is 'yes' then carry on but if 'no' then it really is very simple to change the culture
Define the boundaries and enforce them with zeal. Players and coaches will soon adjust their behaviour once they start get red cards and extended bans.
They do not tolerate this conduct in rugby, NFL, hockey and all manner of other sports so why is there so much resistance to cleaning up football?

i totally agree.
sadly football has become in my opinion a masterclass in cheating techniques, embued by a hopelessly outdated officiating structure.
if you like no different from politics-ill from the chore outwards.

Mick Quinn summed it up perfectly, although he is too thick to realise the implications, this morning when he said:
"professional players will push the limits as far as they will go in order to win"
that is perfectly fair, take every advantage you can
therefore, it is the limits that are wrong, change what they are and players will only go as far as the new limit as Quinn says

unfortunately, altho' laudable sentiments echoed by many, just can't ever see it happening in reality
agreed, i thought it was embarrassing and cringeworthy. i am sure many dutch fans were embarrassed by his behaviour. this is the world cup, the whole world is watching, show some class for goodness sake.
sort of takes the gloss off van gaals tactical change for me, originally it looks like Kruls coming on as the better penalty saver but maybe it was because he's better at the sledging, of course plenty will applaud that like they did the bullying tactics against spain 4 years ago when they knew howard webb was weak, but it wont get the neutrals support
Teams who care about pleasing the neutral very rarely win, imo.
changing the rules and therefore the behaviour of competitors is not unprecedented
as I've said before, in recent years the International Judo Federation have implemented a whole raft of rule changes in response to various things competitors were doing
some for safety, some for fairness, some for the benefit of spectators, some for more technical reasons
and if you compare videos from even 2011 to today (there is a Grand Prix on today) you can see the players have changed their behaviour, they have had to because if not they would be getting DQ every match
nothing stopping football doing the same, if it wants, and getting the sport it wants

Good points judorick. I thought Krul was totally out of order and expected the referee to do something. It is one thing trying to put the penalty taker off by shouting and pointing while on the line but not to walk up to the spot and do it. If I was the taker and Krul did that to me I would have waited until he walked back to his line and then followed him and done something similar at close quarters.

wasnt the point i or anyone else on here was making, but as it happens brazil have always pleased the neutral and won 5 world cups - more than any other country, doesnt exactly fit your theory of "very rarely win"
brazil happy to kick with the best of them
their spin machine has been better than most
theres no plaice for sledging and gamesmanship in football but
the refs and fifa seem to encourage it

should have been a yellow card for unsporting conduct the first time he did it (preferably awarded after the penalty was taken so as not to increase the pressure on the taker) and another one the second.
of course the scope for such behaviour could be eliminated if the refs blew as soon as the ball is placed and gave a retake if the 'keeper wasn't on his line when the penalty was taken.
judorick makes some very good points imo.

the john terry anton ferdinand stuff showed what went on
that the fa was only interested in racism and not abuse/gamesmanship
shows that its ok for sledging as part of the game

the majority of football supporters want success for their team & do not care how its achieved - all the rhetoric about wanting fair play is merely that as laudable as it might be as an objective
but rugby, hockey NFL, martial arts etc fans do care
what does it say about football fans that they accept disgraceful behaviour from players?

I will be the first to lmao when the Argies knock their backdoors in
ali was master of all this gamesmanship and was praised for it
the aussie cricketers were praised for it
surely rugby players enjoy a bit of sledging too ?

Typical one eyed football fans who see nothing wrong with it if it's their keeper doing it,
But when it goes against them its an absolute disgrace!
Behave ffs it's part of the game.

You are right Cheltenham, unsporting behavior is now the norm
Quite simply, the total focus, and concentration required by the pen. takers was broken, and not just the once.I have never seen that sort of behaviour before, and hope to never see it again.Once the concentration is broken, and the pen. taker stops looking into the goal, then, as proved many times before, the chances are it will be missed.
As said above, wonder why the ref. said nothing.
Regarding van Gaal, very strange that he didn't want to bring Hunterlaar on earlier,in order to give RvP some support, and in all probability win the game for Holland.Perhaps he isn't, after all,a great tactician,as I don't class the Krul move as great tactics, just got lucky,as the other keeper MAY have saved a couple too.Time will tell, but if I were a United fan I wouldn't be getting too excited,as many big names have failed in the Prem.

Sledging is common in a lot of sports it's just that it isn't usually so visible.
Personally I loved what Krul done all about getting a mental edge. As for the fear of Van Gaal the man sat there like a cardboard cut out for 105 minutes before realising a change should be made. Fearing him at the moment? Chuck in Kuyt at wing back as well, I'm not
the key part is that a few people will discuss what a tw@t he was for a few days - i.e. like this fred
then, whenever this game is remembered by anyone, people won't remember his antics and will instead remember his game-deciding saves. therefore, why should krul keep to the "moral standards" of the game when not only does he know that his team might benefit, but that no one will think ill of him in years to come. it's a win-win
if refs started threatening to send the keepers off for what krul did last night, then it would stop. until then, they are going to push the limits to try and help their team win

would have made my world cup if the ref had given the koont a straight red
anyone know what happens if a keeper is sent off during a shoot out?
I just wish Krul showed as much passion when playing for Newcastle, 2/20 penalty saves. He's over rated, no issue for me if he leaves Newcastle close season.
surely a yellow card after his first infringement would have stopped any further antics as him getting sent off would have meant a dutch outfield player having to go in goal for the remainder of the shootout.
it looks ridiculous to me this thread has more postings on topic, than the one about the brutal attack on Neymar and his serious injury, which rather is filled with hatred on the victim

that was the result of both teams going in too hard in tackles which happens all the time. costa rica did nothing wrong in their game and this sort of thing doesn't happen as often

It was also the result of weak refereeing, as directed by FIFA, which led to both sets of players knowing they could get away with more fouls without being booked.
Should be a sending off offence to go within 10 metres of penalty taker pre-kick or to say anything to him !
I can remember the same debate years ago when Grobellar done his spaghetti legs
