the poor performances were giving italy too much rope as has been proved they aint all that either and the general abysmal slow tempo of the first 2 games.

that was better today but completely pointless against a team that were already through

england should have won today, would that have changed anything ?
Report sageform June 24, 2014 7:27 PM BST
Only watched bits and pieces with the cricket and a race or two, but all Costa Rica needed to do was avoid red cards and injuries-and we still couldn't beat them. The top 6 South and Central American teams are a division above the Europeans apart maybe from Holland. Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Colombia and Chile-the finalists and winner are in there surely.

thats true sage

but the moaning should have been about the other 2 games which made this one irrelevant. say england took one of the chances (and they really should have!) and won the game, it still means nothing and everyone says CR are through anyway,

england winning this game meant nothing, the performance though better in terms of creating chances and pressing off the ball meant nothing too as CR already through couldn't be measured in same way as opening 2 games.

tbf to Woy, England normally set up like Iran at a tournament.  If they did this time they may have sneaked through.

Woy bowed to the English media and played an open game, maybe to prove to their media that their players are not good enough to outplay sides.

feel a bit sorry for the man, as he obviously set out his team for the media and fans against his better judgement.

"Oh, well, you know, I think I will just carry on with no culpability about the way we played, drawing a MASSIVE WAGE"

SECOND highest paid manager at the tournament.

First time England have failed to qualify out of a World Cup group.  EVER.

BOTTOM of the group.  FIRST time ever.

ONLY one point, Failed to score against COSTA RICA (Fair play to them though)

Del Bosque offered his resignation after the second game.  He's a bloody WORLD CUP WINNER!!!!  Man of Honour IMO.

Prandelli has just resigned.  Got to EURO FINALS last time.  Only just signed a 2 year deal before the World Cup.  Man of Honour IMO.

But no, Hodgson is just going to carry on.

Thoughts?

Complete and utter waste of space.  All he cares about is getting his £7 million for the next 2 years from his absurd employers to get England out of a qualifying group that they simply can't fail to do so, given Platini's expansion.  He will then fail again at the finals, and come out with how unlucky we are.

What a disgrace the man is.
Report jed.davison June 24, 2014 8:58 PM BST
He was entitled to be delighted, that was one one of his better results at the time.

No point talking about it for me. To see Lampard and Gerrard reunited in midfield for the last period, knowing Hodgson was gonna be in charge for another couple of years makes you wanna cry. If Hodgson was King, he wouldn't ever be able to step foot in England again after such an ignominious campaign. He'd be dropped off, exiled, at the Azores on the way home.
Report Java June 24, 2014 8:59 PM BST
And make no mistake, I imagine Hodgson will seek to build his team around Gerrard again.  Makes me want to cry.
Report stridingedge June 24, 2014 9:00 PM BST
i dont think he set up the way the media wanted

he played rooney on the left with baines and they were exposed time after time against italy, a shame we didn't pay the full price for that, a decent italian time would have had 2 or 3 goals witht hat set up in the first half.

pirlo was ruling the show AGAIN whilst our energetic pressing midfielder was sat deep doing jack, something he only did against us, and people were telling me its cos he's so hard to stop, well he isn't if the team presses as a unit properly and thats been shown quite clearly.

the thing i cannot accept is the poor pressing as a team and players not playing as a team in possession enough (ie pass and move), ultimately the manager has to be responsible if his players are not on the pitch set up to do even the basics.

you can rant on and on about the ability of the players

costa rica topped our group and plenty of other teams not full of world class players have shown more because on the pitch they show great effort and a unity on and off the ball, they do the basics right and give 100% effort playing as a TEAM.

we looked too lethargic in the games that mattered and some of the tactics
Report stridingedge June 24, 2014 9:02 PM BST

Not particularly wishing to join in the trashing of Hodgson (not a fan but our problems run deeper than which two he picks in central midfield).

However, I found his post match interview infuriating.  The only thing worse than watching a tepid performance such as that, is for it to be followed by a patronising assessment from the manager claiming it was a good performance when we all watched it and know it wasn't.  He's not the first to do it but I wish he'd just admit it wasn't good enough.

this game could easily have finished 1 or 2-0 but the negative pts about the manager in the games that mattered would still have been the same.

a win in this game would have meant jack

Englands only chance at a tournament is to play like Greece and get lucky.

Report Can't Catch Me June 24, 2014 9:25 PM BST
I can't believe sensible people think this its all down to the players. As Java rightly says, other countries doing much better than us have significantly worse players. You could make a decent argument for us being the worst team at the World Cup. There is no way we have the worst individuals.

Because previous Managers have also done badly as our national Manager, it's become the perceived wisdom that it must be the players.

Imagine someone like Brendan Rodgers getting hold of this team. I'm not saying it's ALL the Managers fault, as the whole structure of English football is flawed, but I think Hodgson should take the lions share of the blame for this World Cup.

If the Iranian league had all the money in the world and could attract some of the best players in the world then their players would look decent week in week out. English players are greatly overestimated.  Your lucky if there are 2 or 3 of them in your top teams.

In all the time i have seen england play, i can count on one hand the players who were comfortable on the ball, Hoddle being the best, but if memory serves he was lambasted as being a luxury player by your media.

I think it's ridiculous to say we don't have the players. We've beaten Spain and Brazil and drew in Brazil in recent times, put nine past Croatia in qualifiers. the issue is with the guy telling the players what to do, Hodgson.

said it a hundred times, put Mourinho or someone of that quality in charge and we would go close to winning a tournament. FA should ignore what the fans/media want, and just appoint someone short-term. if we paid Mourinho £2m to manage us for a month in Euro 2016 and we did well, nobody would care about his wage
