I think the two questions are:

1)  Would this bunch of players have done any better under a different manager?  Brendan perhaps, but of course Suarez played for the opposition.
2). Would the manager have done any better with a better bunch of players?  France or Germany, say?

But he'd have got peters for being too dull.
