thunderstruck who will you bet on if holland and spain both qualify... the tried and tested winners or the team who had one good game?

How can potentially losing 1200 be no biggie as far as a balance of 2000 (over the year) is concerned? That's over half the entire balance!

When was the last time a first-choice squad (not including dead rubbers etc.) got hammered like that in the group stage, and then went on to lift the cup?

robben and van persie top quality both over 30 need to stay injury free for the dutch to go far

at the last world cup spain lost their first game to the mighty switzerland

I know, but they weren't taken apart and ripped to shreds. The Switzerland match was a bit of a freak. But there were worrying signs in that game today that Spain isn't a side that can sweep through the knockout stages without taking a hit. Admittedly, the Netherlands are a superior side to Switzerland, but that was still one hell of a shellacking they took.

I suspect the odds on both sides are about right.
13s/14s in an international tournament suggests a team that could become a major contender, but that has a few question marks hanging over it. If the Netherlands end the group stage convincingly, including taking apart Chile, they'll probably become one of the favourites to win the tournament. 14 could come to be seen as good value. Then again, maybe this was a freak. That's why they're 14 rather than 6. Tournaments are where the hype and (to some extent) past form get pushed aside. Some teams will take to the tournament, and surpass expectations, while others will come to be seen as past their sell-by-date. Hard to tell yet whether today's thrashing was just a freak, or a sign that Spain has weaknesses that will prevent it from repeating the success of the last four years. |

This is what I wrote in my preview fred:
marychain1 19 May 14 20:29 Joined: 05 Apr 05 Well we've taken our positions, and we're entrenched. There's no point going over old ground repeatedly, but I wish to point out for the record my belief that Xavi and Iniesta are past their best, Spain will be found out by a more mobile outfit at some stage and won't win the World Cup. If they do I'll hold my hands up and say I was wrong. Won't be the first time after all. |

i still think it was a freak result and i think spain will come back strong. yesterday was a one off game with a one off result never to be repeated, even if they play again in this competition. however, it cant be ignored that spain have made it difficult for themselves.
they might want to think about dropping cassilas, he hasn't looked right for quite a while now. he was very poor yesterday even apart from his obvious clanger. football is very weird sometimes. i honestly believe that if rvp doesn't score that goal just before half-time, spain go on and win. |

The changing point in the game was the Spain goal. Spain couldn't cope as soon as Holland started to attack. They were the better team from that point on.

metaphor, agreed spain wont play as badly again and 5-1 is obviously totalyweird but it doesn't change he fact it was an accurate reflection of the match.if rvp doesn't score? if the other 4 goals weren't scored? a bit silly in my view.as mary said pretty much as soon as Holland started to attack they totally dominated.if spain hadn't scored at all it may have been different as Holland may have still kept it cagey but once thety realised that spains defence was so slow and cumbersome they just went for it

one things for sure ,its a wide open tourney, brazil could easily have lost to the croats and for 30 mins in the second half they were hugely second best.brazil at the very least showed they are beatable, spain have shown theyre not gonna be a patch on what they were, its now over to the argies to impress.this could be the year of the rag. we may just get a funny result this time.

there's a lot of people on here writing off spain. i think that is very naive. football is a weird game. it basically comes down to who takes their chances. you can dominate and lose. you can play terrible and win. spain weren't terrible, they dominated holland for large parts of the game but wasted many chances to score. holland by contrast scored with almost every chance they created - by that i mean while it was still a game. later on spain completely lost the plot and anyone who doesn't take that on board when assessing the match doesn't know football.
the rvp goal just before half-time changed the game. at the time everyone and their wife inc all the dutch fans were thinking 'business as usual, spain will cruise to victory' the dutch players and staff were thinking... 'oh well maybe we can still qualify if we win the other 2 games'. anyone who says different is either a liar or a fantasist. 2nd half spain were caught out by chasing the game too hard. not sure why they did that. not sure what possessed them to push so far forward and expose themselves to the superior pace of the dutch. it was all a bit weird - robben and rvp must have been amazed at the space in behind they were gifted time and time again. spain at that point played like rank amateurs. like i say... very very weird. maybe they were over-confident, arrogant even. maybe a good beating to bring them back down to earth is exactly what they needed. can spain be ko'd? yes of course they can. but i very much doubt they will ever play like that again. |

you are the boring one, you've made the same point about a dozen times on different threads
no one is listening to you so do yourself a favour and shush you can come back if Spain prove you right and tell us 'I told you so' but bleating on and on proves nothing at this stage |

the dutch would've won me over 10k in the final 4 yrs ago
instead lost a similar amount overall funny old game, isn't it?...the slings & arrows... Spain will NOT be winning this WC Brasil were hardly uber impressive it's their 4 the Argies if they can step up 2 the plate England may also surprise Italy could do better than expected wouldn't say it's wide open per se but doubt there will be an absolute stand out team unless it's Messi's boys BTW why is the England game on so late? |

By:
spain 4 years ago started off very slowly v the swiss.
no fluke result then btw. the swiss fully deserved it. looked like to me spains set up was all wrong. the chelsea fullback looks out of his depth....and so does alba. pique and ramos looked liked they had never played together before. they may need another pair of legs in midfield as alonso's and xavis have gone imo. stick martinez next to busquets and it should mean more covering available and then allow the fullbacks to get forward. |

I watched the game last night and it looked like Spain were cruising until the brilliant Van Persie goal at the end of the 1st half. In the 2nd half all hell broke loose when Holland threw caution to the wind and really went for it. I just think the Netherlands were very brave and went all out for goals, and if they continue to do that they can win the whole thing. I hope they don't go back into their shell because judging by that performance they could be the team of the tournament. They played with no fear, single-minded attack, adventurous, best CF in the world (RVP), one of the best attacking players in the world (Robben). The revelation was Daley Blind who was incredible last night. If those 3 play like that every game the Netherlands will take some stopping.
Of course it could be as Metaphor says and Spain were so bad they made the Dutch look like world beaters. Time will tell. |

Daley Blind plays for Ajax. I have a feeling he won't be there next season.
