Having loudly assured the world that there was no such thing as a £40 million escape clause in his contract and who can forget those heartfelt words of apparent honesty from the manager? Now they blithely say that there was indeed the clause and essentially they told Suarez to suck on it. It'll be interesting to see how he reacts the next time the wheels fall off the rancid Anfield cart.

A player like Suarez should be at a team challenging for the league and CL every season.

He is wasted at Liverpool.

I don't get what happened in the summer.

So Suarez's contract has a £40m release clause. Arsenal bid £40m +1. Suarez wants to leave. What stopped him forcing an exit? Did his team not read his own contract? They must have known. I dont understand. If Liverpool receive a release clause-sized bid but can reject it, then what the **** does a release clause actually do?!

I thought the £40m figure in the contract was the point at which they needed to listen to bids from other teams not the point at which they had to sell him.  Probably not what Pep's brother thought and almost certainly 'lost in translation' somewhere down the line.
Report MrMeaner March 3, 2014 9:30 AM GMT
This is what John Henry said on the matter:

"He had a buyout clause of £40m. Arsenal, one of our prime rivals – this year we’re tied for 2nd … we’re actually 2nd because of GD"

A. "They offered £40m+£1. What we’ve found ... is that contracts don’t seem to mean a lot in England – actually, in world football."

A. "We sold a player, Fernando Torres, for £50m, that we did not want to sell, we were forced to."

A. "Since apparently these contracts don’t seem to hold, we took the position that we’re just not selling."

These things cut both ways. I reckon if Wenger hadn't have tried to take the pith with the extra pound, it's possible he might have got Suarez with a £50 million bid, & Arsenal would probably have had the league sewn up by now.

Wenger is a good manager, but he's no businessman that's for sure......Thank god.

Report Biscuit1979 March 3, 2014 10:09 AM GMT
I said it at the time and i'll say it again, if Suarez really wanted to leave he would've gone on strike and forced through a move. The fact that only Arsenal were in for him probably helped him make his mind up to stay. If the likes of Barca or Real had been in for him, we'd have seen a different outcome and he'd have gone.

Fair play to Liverpool though, stood their ground and have been thoroughly rewarded. Suarez hasn't exactly looked unhappy this seaosn has he?
Report mexicano March 3, 2014 10:13 AM GMT
agree with biscuit here, and would add that whoever thought it would be a good idea to offer the penny above the release fee must be off their rocker, surely they must have realised that all they would achieve would be to put liverpools backs up, and make them adopt a stance where they would never sell to arsenal.

or was that arsenals strategy all along?

the one thing i will say re the club, is that any latent sense of injustice suarez might be harbouring wont be helped by liverpool coming out and basically stating that they mugged the player off.
Report wallis March 3, 2014 10:48 AM GMT
A buy out clause means nothing. All it does is allow clubs to put something in that basically says a player cannot talk to another club until the clause is activated.  What Arsenal bid is irrelevant once they offer 40 million as it only entitles them to discussions. It is not (contrary to what people seem to think on here) a "buy out" offer.  The club and player still need to agree to sell and Liverpool dug their heels in believing 40 million to be too little.

Had Arsenal stuck 50 mill on the table like the Torres bid then maybe that would have been enough but 40 million plus £1 was seen as a p/ss take.

I think John Henry has now realised that contracts in soccer mean nothing unlike the U.S systems. If Suarez really wanted to force a move through then he would have done in the same way he had at Ajax
Report MrMeaner March 3, 2014 10:48 AM GMT

Wenger has only once, as far as I can remember, layed down a serious bid at the correct price the first time of offering, to make sure he got his man. Mesut Ozil. His precious attacking mid. Dont get me wrong I am still a huge Ozil fan as much as things havent quite worked out as they should this year (partly Wenger to blame for playing him too much). There was a very good article on the espn site back in september explaining the legal ramifications of a buy out clause SFTD.  It was written on the back of Uniteds botched attempt to buy a spanish player.  Woodward made a mess of it and didnt understand how the buy out clause worked so they didnt get the player.  I will have to try and find it because it explained how the clause in england means nothing other than it opens up dialogue.  But as Biscuit rightly says, for Arsenal to know that the clause was 40 million means that someone leaked the confidential details of the contract. That could easily have been Suarez or his agent trying to engineer a move though.

I think in Spain the player has to pay it ? So Suarez in spain could pay 40 million , get himself out of the Liverpool contract and then get Arsenal to pay him all that money back again. But there are some tax implications in doing that in Spain and that caused the problem Woodward had.

What we have here is a poster who comes with with a sensationalist thread title to pander to other plastic sh!ts and hopefully make a few chums. Whereas real fans from all clubs would do nothing but applaud what the American owners did in the summer, and stop players and agents trying to dictate and hold clubs to ransom.

You had a situation where a player had been tapped up and wanted to leave a club who had stood by him through a couple of shameful incidents where he personally had caused damage to the clubs name. Then you had Arsenal clearly taking the Mick trying to embarrass LFC into selling their best player to a direction rival for a sum which indicated they had breached Fa rules and had already begun negotiations. Then you had Liverpool digging their heels in and refusing to be made mugs of.

Only the bitterest of the bitters would be squealing about their part in that carnival to this extent.

Report mikenichols March 5, 2014 2:15 AM GMT
It's really basically very simple:

The truth is that Suarez did have a buy-out clause in his contract.

And Liverpool maintained that he didn't.

That qualifies as barefaced lying, so the club should have no complaints whatsoever if in future transfer deals no one takes them at their word, whether player(s), manager or directors.

All other issues, eg whether Suarez owes a debt of gratitude to Liverpool for supporting him - and by the way, they did this out of sheer self-interest rather than through disinterested, 'compassionate' motives - are actually irrelevant to the question of whether or not the club acted with integrity.

The view that this doesn't matter at all is down to pure self-interest, the emotional bias of a fan, which is only concerned with gaining an advantage, not with the truth of a legally binding document.

Anyone who thinks that this doesn't matter has no respect for one of the key fundamentals of our democratic system, the rule of law. And it's by no means a valid argument to cite other examples of disrespect for the law to justify ignoring it in this case. Just because someone commits a burglary and manages to escape arrest, doesn't justify someone else doing the same, or stealing a car.

If you're content with the standards of the gutter (as long as you're 'winning' of course) then you can ignore this, but don't complain if you're the victim of anyone's lies in the future.

Mike, what are your thoughts on tapping up?
Report mexicano March 5, 2014 8:10 AM GMT
one thing that mike [the goonie] nichols conveniently leaves out of his post is that arsenal were quite obviously involved in negotiations with the player in breach of fa rules and regs.

this coming from a supporter of a club who themselves and their fans want to "hoot the gaff down" when one of theirs gets tapped up.

Obviously Suarez and his Agent didn't have a copy of the said contract. Crazy

If you're content with the standards of the gutter (as long as you're 'winning' of course) then you can ignore this, but don't complain if you're the victim of anyone's lies in the future.

Outraged by everything, ashamed of nothing.

A pound and 40 mill was a lucky guess.  No evidence of "tapping up", no smoking gun, nothing to see here chaps.

Doesn't that also cover players signing a lengthy, legally-binding, contract, who then spit out their dummy not long after because another club has shown an interest & are prepared to offer them more money & a better chance of success ?

When they sign that contract they are effectively saying that they will commit to said club  club for X number of years. Are they not breaking their word then just in the same way a football club has ?

It cuts both ways mate. & John Henry was right when he said that footballing contracts mean jack-s**t. Get over your it.
Report efisio. March 5, 2014 12:52 PM GMT
If the contract meant that he was free to leave with a bid of over £40m, then surely if he had wanted to go to Arsenal, his agent, who must have a copy of the said contract, would have said,"don't worry what Liverpool say, just sign on the dotted line".

Eternal please do point out where i have supported (or indeed even stated what i think) about these 'actions' My point is that you are making an issue of this for no other reason than Liverpool look like they are in contention to win the league. This thread wouldn't exist and your hatred would be directed at 'ha ha liverpool are carp' threads if they were in say man Utd's position but unfortunately for you they are in contention so you have to express your hatred in this nonsensical way.
Perhaps i've got it wrong and you genuinely are so naive and wet behind the years that you don't know how things work and have done for a number of years at all clubs and indeed in society at large. Maybe you are either 14 or 108 - if 14 then fair enough but if 108 i've news for you there never was a bygone era of 'gentleman's word is my bond' etc!
I apologise that your innocence in these matters causes you to be so confused - maybe you actually think that an insignificant no mark such as yourself (or myself) has a voice. Maybe you are fooled by the 'join in the debate' nonsense that the meeja encourages, maybe you are a fool, maybe not..........

Eternal

There is no point in trying to debate issues such as this with the average football fan.
They are by nature tribal and can get quite aggressive even over the smallest of perceived slights..
no reason will penetrate and it can only end in confusion. Football fans, and even some Liverpool
fans must be included, are in the main working class and therefore likely to be incapable of logical
thought.

It seems that way. Rare is the supporter who holds their hands up and admits that their player or club acted poorly. I find my interest in the game waning by the year with the antics which are endemic seemingly at all levels. Other sports do have problems of their own but these days give me the honest sight of 15 or 13 rugby players belting shiit out of each other for 80 minutes without feeling the need to roll around, respecting the official and then coming off the pitch and generally behaving as decent human beings.
Report ours4keeps March 5, 2014 6:44 PM GMT
Absolutley EO. If you cherish honesty and integrity so highly as you appear to here then I can only assume you'll now forego the football forum totally and move on to something more trustworthy like rugby, snooker or specials.

The players union looked at the contract at the time and agreed with the club,so fk knows what this fuss is all about.
Report ours4keeps March 5, 2014 7:04 PM GMT
There is the possibility that JWH had had a couple of drinks and embellished what actually happened. Let's be honest, being the big man who refuses to buckle even in the face of a legally watertight contract sounds much cooler than having a team of lawyers scouring the small print for a way out. And given how many people investigated it and how easily Suarez's team gave up its a possibility. If his agents knew he was in the right they wouldn't have hesitated to take it further surely.
