Seems like Utd are betting the house on him. They are club 'owned' by people who used loans to buy it now up against other clubs who have backers willing to throw money at the game because they can afford to, not just at home but in the European competition too, and their answer to staying at the top table is to pay that much to Rooney? Either I missing some part of their thinking that will turn out to be genius or it is utter madness.

Exactly.  He's past his peak already, quite what he's done to suggest he'll be going strong at that age is beyond me.  And Fergie.

Rooney and his agent have been f*cking shrewd here. They hold all the cards. They know the situation at United, might not be in europe next season, will struggle to attract the top players and therefore can't afford to lose their best player.

On top of that United know that if he did leave, they would have to spend the best part of 40m+ to replace him and pay that player 150-200k a week. So they're f*cked really, they have to give Rooney what he wants. Mind boggling wage but looking at the bigger picture, it probably works out cheaper than the alternative. Ridiculous wage though, no wonder Colleen stuck by him!
