Was chatting with my brother yesterday about Pardew saying how avoiding getting in the Europa league was a really good tactic
The run in is good with 5 home games against relegation strugglers, NUFC are perfectly safe and set to finish 9th or 10th which to me is better than 5th or 6th (I wouldn't wanna be in Europa)
Yet I understand there is talk he will be sacked? I don't get that. Compare it to Pochetino who is desperate to get in the Europa but doesn't care coz he will be off somewhere else (and the new manager will just have to cope with the Europa)
As a neutral I think it would be madness to sack Pardew, surely continuity is what you want? Yes, need to get some players in the summer but there's always loads of player movement in a World Cup year

Alan Pardew is prevented from signing stars while is forced to sell his best players. Mike Ashley has very short hands and is just hell bent on wringing out every last penny from the club before selling it on for huge personal gain. So long as Newcastle stay within the 'premier leagues cash cow', flog their best players and 50k+ loyal fans keep turning up Ashley will remain very happy and Newcastle fans increasingly disgruntled.

I'm not too up on the goings on up there
just saying, false expectation can lead to bad decision making what do you expect NUFC to do? top 4 every year? aint happening win a trophy every other year? aint happening finish 6th or higher? not worth it be happy with your lot, much better than it could have been, you could be doing a 'Boro or a Leeds, permanently stuck outside the EPL |

As much as they laugh at Sunderland or Boro, there are Barcodes in their 50s who have never seen Newcastle win any silverware, other than the Division Two title. |

That's why I've given up on football. I always thought that the point of the sport was to win things. Apparently, now as long as you finish 8th everything is alright. Especially when you not only lose to your fierce rivals but get absolutely thrashed by them repeatedly.

Making several public statements, where he outlined that the Club had sold by far their best player.....
Whilst technically correct perhaps or even definitely correct, its hardly motivational for the rest of the players to continually hear. Poor people management, in the day and age of the Modern Fotballer for me |

the Europa League is a dogs breakfast of a competition and widely seen as such, the format is terrible and half way through they bring in the losing teams from the UCL who have been playing Barca, Bayern etc

I agree the Europa League is a dog's breakfast. But modern day top-flight football is sod the FA Cup, sod the League Cup, let's just finish mid-table and be very boring in doing so. Like you say, Newcastle won't win the league every year, won't win trophies every year. No, they haven't won anything of significance in 59 years.

anyway, getting back to the point, what is Pardew expected to do between now and the end of the season?
What would be the point of sacking him now? Spite? Vindictiveness? Certainly not continuity and a long term plan NUFC are out of the Cups and not going to make top 4 or be involved in relegation, so why not focus on next season? Identify your transfer targets, prepare the players for next season and try to improve sacking the manager takes you back not forwards imo |

Is Alan Pardew really on the verge of being sacked? I would never discount anything from the circus that is Newcastle United, and less so the circus that is Mike Ashley. But I agree there's no point sacking him. I'd be very concerned about Newcastle's form but I always imagine any Newcastle manager under Mike Ashley is working with one hand (at least) tied behind his back. Newcastle seem to have had a good season until this last month or so. It's about time they had a long-term plan - one that looked remotely plausible when Pardew was given a six-year deal. Then, just then, would Newcastle have a chance of actually competing for some honours again.

barcelona played off with leeds united, the last winners of fairs cup for who kept the cup outright
you can knock it now, but back though late 60 s and early 70 s it was a big deal, aided by britist teams doing very well it was replaced, almost seamlessly, by the uefa cup silly rules like 1 city 1 club were not abandoned until the mid 70s |

Fairs Cup was often a stepping stone for teams on the up - we beat Feyenoord in our first European game - in 1971 they were European Champions when beating Celtic - many top teams won it & 12 games to play to win the competition

anyway, I would not want to be in Europa traipsing round shiitttty fcukholes like the Ukraine, Moldova, Israel and other basket case countries on a Thursday - and I've been to them
much better off out of it and focus on domestic cups and good home form rather than being knackered some of them games in eastern Russia kick off at 6pm UK time for the benefit of UK TV but in reality it can 10pm kick off over there, by the time they get back to UK it can be Friday evening and then they play Sunday no ta |

What option would you advocate
- Keep the Champions League as is, scrap the Europa League? - Expand the Champions League and have it as the only European-wide competition? - Keep the Champions League as is, and try yet another format of an ailing Europa League? Or, are the Brits the only country who don't get the Europa League? |
