Its was all this stuff that was in the news. If they've arrested them now then the investigation will have stemmed from this. They cant arrest them when they're sitting in Singapore but they nap them at the airport when they got back here!

Unscrupulous individuals wait for the players after games, offer 5-10k to make sure a games goes one way or anther. Thats a lot of money to players at this level.

You can get 10's of thousands on these games on the asian bookies. It was similar to the Finnish betting scandal where they tapped up a club (ROPS i think it was) and they were just betting hundreds of thousands on their games.

Look,

If you are a professional player playing in a top league, why on earth would you take a bung to chuck a game?  You have far too much to lose long term.  You could be dropped, missing out win bonuses, your transfer value decreases etc.

At conference level, it's a different story.  I am certain players are at it or have been at it for some time.

Broomwagon, in the article it mentions this:

"The fixer asked us for €60,000 [£50,000], which he said was to cover the cost of paying the players"

I doubt that cash is just for 1 or 2 players, probably shared out between the team.
Report Ove November 28, 2013 9:53 AM GMT
The news I watched last night said it would cost £70,000 to pay all the players in one team, and the fact that they "only" earn £5,000 a month, makes it very likely that a lot of them would be tempted in earning  £7,000 for two hours work. They referred to the Conference league by name. These bets are placed at Asian bookies, usually illegal ones, but they can bet in millions, so paying £70,000 to fix a match would be peanuts to them.

Report Biscuit1979 November 28, 2013 10:12 AM GMT
As someone said earlier you wonder how some of these asian bookies make money.

First you get the spot fixing in cricket. Now if you're a bookie and someone came to you and said i want 300k that so and so will bowl a no ball in the 6th over, would you take that bet? Or would you think, hang on a sec, perhaps this bloke might just know something.

Likewise if some dodgy bloke from Singapore came to you and said i want 250k that Hyde v Nuneaton (for example) will be over 4.5 surely it'd set alarm bells ringing somewhere.

Why do they take these bets?
Report reb November 28, 2013 11:11 AM GMT

Report The Leopard November 28, 2013 11:28 AM GMT
Wouldn't they split the bet up between numerous bookies?
Report Biscuit1979 November 28, 2013 11:36 AM GMT
Even if they split it between 100 bookies, the question still applies, why would any of them take a bet on something that would only be bet on if the punter had inside knowledge.

If a guy from Singapore goes to an asian bookie and wants cash on a high goals market in an English non league game, you'd surely be asking yourself, why? It's not Barca v Real!

The spot fixing in cricket is worse though. Why would anyone take a bet on a no ball in a particluar over. Ridiculous bet that wold only be punted on if someone knew something.

Not sure the spot fixing is as clear as betting on a no ball. The bowlers were using signs to show when they were about to bowl a no ball, etc. If you knew the signs you could make a fortune on here just trading the ensuing odd changes on the match odds market. It would barely be noticeable when upwards of £20m is traded on an IPL match.

Report Biscuit1979 November 28, 2013 12:01 PM GMT
Spot fixing can include betting on no balls though, i'm sure it comes down to betting on when one will be bowled. Bit like betting on when the first throw in or corner will be in football

Gary Simpson has revealed he reported a game to the Football Association because he suspected it had been fixed.

"I was involved in a game, I don't want to say where it was, but there were two penalties given against us. I was told there had been an irregular betting pattern on it during the game and before the game.

"I flagged that up. We heard from the authorities that it was correct and there had been an irregular betting pattern in the game.

"We lost the game and we ended up having a player sent off. To this day it's the only game I have been involved in where I have thought there was something wrong. This was not while I was at Lincoln City."

presumably it's this game:

http://uk.soccerway.com/matches/2011/11/25/england/league-two/barnet-fc/macclesfield-town-fc/1119308/

someone filmed the two penalties:

A match between these same two teams was the subject of a "fix" discussion on here 10 months earlier:

Now look at this fellas tweets on November 7 this year where he's trying to tell anyone that will listen about fixed match details being sold on Facebook:
