No one sets back the advancement of black culture in the UK more than Jason Roberts and the Black Lawyers society.  Black players in this country must be cringing going into this weekends fixtures thanks to these self promoting idiots.

No doubt the media will be called by other meddlers up and down the country with stories of racist abuse during the upcoming matches and set relations back even further.

He wasnt referring to a black person Freddie , he was referring to a player. Roy Hodgson doesnt look at Townsend and see a black man first and everything else second. He sees an English footballer who is having the week of his life and in front of the rest of the experienced players and squad tells a tale that implies he is the man for the occassion.

The only people who see a black man in this 'story' are the naive cretins trying to make out something its not. Perhaps you should take a good look at yourself Freddie because unless you are on a wind up you clearly cannot separate a mans colour from his standing as a person.

This story obviously hasn't had the effect the Sun wanted it to have. What with it being almost unanimously discredited as a completely ridiclous non-story on social networking sites, plus Townsend himself and Rooney coming to Roy's defence, all in all it's made the Sun look pretty stupid.

They've gone from yesterdays headline story, front page news to it barely warranting a mention in todays paper. you'd have expected the 'England manager in race row' to have at least had some kind of follow up, but no they appear to have moved on already. Can't think why?!
Report freddiek October 18, 2013 10:10 AM BST
wallis, im not the one in the wrong. You don't refer to a black man either indirectly or directly as a monkey in this day and age. So either u accept that woy has been insensitive or we give him a pass cos he's old

as i said already you can't say anything that can be construed as racist or racially insensitive when you're in his position

he's supposed to be a safe pair of hands and he's now caused the biggest furore since Hoddle's comments
Report wallis October 18, 2013 10:19 AM BST
Perhaps we should strike all primates from the dictionary then Freddie. Roy hasnt caused any furore, the person who has done is the brave man who gave the story to the newspaper. I wonder if this 'champion of black people' was paid for his story ?? because if he was that offended Im sure he wouldnt have been trying to make some financial gain out it (that was sarcasm).

If Andros Townsend cant understand what the fuss is about then how can you possibly level racist allegations at Roy Hodgson - are you the injured party ? have you found his comments insulting to your way of life ?  somehow I doubt it.  Roberts and the lawyers are just self promoting and doing nothing other than whipping up racial hatred which is allegedly what they are trying to stamp out.

Freddie , is the anecdote a tale about how the famous, glamorous and popular people are being outshone by a lesser known therefore continue letting him do what he is doing ? or is it a racist slur on black people ?

Once you can answer that honestly that should give you everything you need to know about how stupid this whole thing is.

I feel sorry for Townsend because this was one of the best weeks of his life and its been ruined by PC idiots and someone inside the England setup  that has stabbed him in the back for the sake of trying to undermine Hodgson and make a few quid.  As said earlier on the thread How long will it be before some idiot starts monkey chanting at him the next time he plays football ?

When I take my daughter to the zoo I will be on my guard to look around for any black footballers, lawyers or journos before saying 'look at the monkeys' as we approach the enclosure. Heaven forbid it could be misconstrued.

I mean fancy referring to a monkey as a monkey. We all now know that when referring to an actual monkey we should use the term 'the animal formerly known as a monkey.' That way there is absolutely no room for doubt.

Thank God Roy didn't use a blackboard too to demonstrate his point or the poor fella would, as we speak, be stripping down to his undercrackers for a public flogging outside FA HQ.

The great paradox is such nonsensical cries of racism actually stir race divisions amongst the mentally weak. Crazy

wallis, you don't seem to want to criticise woy in any shape or form. You don't think he was tactless even?

hes alleged to have said "no offence" after the monkey reference, so he probably knows he's effed up and is intelligent enough to know that saying something like that can be taken as offensive. I can understand his frustration that this has been leaked but ultimately its his fault. It came from his mouth and anything else is just blaming the messenger. theres been dressing room leaks before.

Freddie, such apologist drivel is the reason why the PC brigade run riot. Roy is a lot of things but is certainly no racist and trying to twist his words to suit an agenda epitomises all that is wrong with 'kick it out.'

All it does is invent a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. As a multicultural society most people treat each other as human beings and this is not subject to skin tone. But we are continually force fed the myth that racism is prevelant in English football.

It isn't, we are not in Poland or the Ukraine.

I totally agree Charwell. This countries record compared to Europe as far as racism goes is exceptional. Why people feel a constant need to keep fueling a fire is beyond me. It does nothing but create problems that were not there.

Im dropping out of this as Freddie clearly has issues with Hodgson or at some point will claim he is fishing to save his embarrassment.

The correct approach should be to get the person who leaked the story in front of a camera and ask them :

1. What exactly did you find so offensive and can you explain your position on racism ?
2. Considering you were so outraged you leaked it to a newspaper did you get paid for it ?

First of all, it's an old joke about the monkey being more intelligent than the human so the monkey does all the technical work and the human is only there to feed the monkey.
Seems Roy felt that Townsend was doing all the work and was telling the other players to feed him (give him the ball)

charwell, would u tell the same joke around black people?

you could quite easily tell that joke around black people as it contains absolutely nothing whatever that black people might find offensive.
Of course if you were a racist and thought of black people as monkeys then you probably wouldn't tell that joke around them.

Looking through the squad i'm starting to think it was Defoe.

The journo in question (Gordon Smart) has said it was a player that went directly to him after the game and was offended by it. Smart used to edit the celebrity gossip page of the Sun and would no doubt know Defoe who's often moving in celebrity circles due to his various ex's.

So if there was a market for this, my money would be on him.

If you're offended by a comment, you should have the b*llocks to go and speak to the person that's offended you. Even more so when they are your boss. Running off and bitching about it is embarrassing. I hope we find out who it is and they get plenty of stick for it. The squad doesn't need players like that.

Charwell , Fat Frank ? I dont believe it.  Its not as if he has an uncle who would be interested in the England job should Hodgson be sacked. He is hardly a bitter relative that only a few weeks ago slated Roy and the selection system just before Hodgson and Englands biggest match of the season.

And its not like the paper that broke the story happens to be the same one that employs said uncle to write a column for them. Or that its the paper that printed the article claiming Stuart Pearce was a racist for saying something 20 odd years ago to scupper any chance Pearce had of getting the job. You would have to be mad to suggest that they have been putting up the Uncle as "the peoples choice" for the last two years.

Besides , why would Frank do it ? He was only hauled off in the first game and benched for the second one and clearly will be missing out come next summer. Im sure he would have taken that with dignity and not be on the phone to the family first chance he got...

The England player who leaked the Roy Hodgson space monkey joke is angry at Andros Townsend for backing his manager, says the journalist who broke the story.

Gordon Smart, editor of the Scottish Sun, has confirmed that his source is indeed an England player rather than one of their associates. He has also claimed that the player was one of several who were offended by Hodgson's joke.

During his half-time team talk for England's World Cup qualifier against Poland last Tuesday, Hodgson encouraged his side to pass the ball as often as possible to Townsend by using a NASA joke including the line "feed the monkey".

Smart revealed the story on Wednesday night, with Townsend taking to Twitter the next day to insist he had not been offended. Wayne Rooney also defended Hodgson by saying the situation was "ridiculous".

"He [the source] was angry about Andros Townsend tweeting the following day [to say he was not offended] because he assures me Andros was upset by it," Smart said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme.

"The following morning [after the Poland game] I got a call from an England player who wasn't very happy at all about what had gone on in the dressing room.
"I said to the player, 'Do you think this is a good idea to go public? Is there not another way for you to go through with this? Should you not go to the FA about this? Have you spoken to Roy?'
"He said no, he wanted to go public and that he wasn't the only player who was upset. They had agreed they wanted to go public with it.
"I called it in to the office and during the day more than one player did corroborate that Roy had made this remark, that it was taken the wrong way. Across the board everyone did agree it was taken the wrong way.
"I don't for one second think Roy Hodgson is racist. I just think he chose his words really unwisely and misjudged the room.
"As I understood it, it was Roy speaking to Chris Smalling and telling him not to muck about with it and to feed the monkey. There were a few extra words in there that I can't repeat at this time of day on the radio.

"It was taken the wrong way and I know that one senior player and Gary Neville looked at each other and at that point said to Roy: 'I think you better explain what you have just said there'. That was when he explained the NASA anecdote."

When quizzed about the identity of his source, Smart was adamant it was an England player, but refused to confirm whether they had featured in Tuesday's clash with Poland. He said: "One hundred per cent direct from the horse's mouth, an England player speaking to me direct.

"I've got to be careful about jigsaw identification," he added.
"If I go in to detail about whether they played or whether they didn't play that would lead to it narrowing it down who it was, so I can't say either way. It's only fair that I protect my source on that."

So Hodgson , without any preamble about NASA , just pointed at Townshend and said 'Feed The Monkey!' Scared

Thought smart was gonna name n shame the grass.  Gradually trying to distance himself
Like I said at start of Fred woy used the story to cover up calling andros a cheeky monkey. Harmless but not good
Still don't know for sure but think we agree viva. Neville sticking his snout in the trough like billy big balls again
I started off liking the guy on tv but he's getting smuggler by the day
fergie has been using the press for decades and all the contacts are still there
Now it's all starting up about his stinking book never heard so much hype about a book he didn't write anyway or if he did he's got the fastest wring in the west
Still going small here

Interesting, Biscuit. As soon as I heard it, I thought Tottenham. Why? Because Harry had been using the press to stick the knife into Woy ahead of the qualifiers. 'Arry plays such great attacking football after all - he says so himself. Who wants to remember a long history of tedious 0-0 draws, such as against Stevenage in the Cup... but I'm not bitter! Cry

So, I immediately thought, this is someone loyal to Mr Pockets Full O'Cash, who doesn't get a game under Woy, who thinks he should be playing and who, lets be honest, is black. Defoe ticks all those boxes. Plus, he's someone who appears close to the press for a number of reasons.

Smart hasn't been so smart
Reckon he  wishes he could go back and keep quiet. Been made to look a mug and will eventually have to reveal the facts. Not these little brush offs he keeps doing
Rival papers are gunning for him and the player
Still was a dated and stupid thing for woy to do .
Who will be the first player to expose the grass. Rooney for me I like the guy more now never did before.i like his show of loyalty to woy more than Neville's slimy think you'd better explain yourself woy

How was it slimy from Neville? He's just letting Roy know his comment may have been misunderstood.
