Dont get me wrong Baines is a decent player but shouldnt utd be aiming a little higher ?

Given that he is 28 he isnt exactly a signing for years to come, i know man u need a left back.

Strange transfer target imo.

Don't think it's that strange. They have a couple of promising youngsters already. He could be in for the start of the season and at his peak for another 3 seasons. Also I imagine Moyesie likes the idea of bringing in a familiar face.
Report Crisp77 June 27, 2013 9:22 PM BST
Any move for Tony Hibbert yet?
Report Ibrahima Sonko June 27, 2013 9:29 PM BST
But moyesie bringing in a familar face the way forward for man utd ?

Im sure there are 20 better left backs than baines below £20m.
Report Can't Catch Me June 27, 2013 9:33 PM BST
Only if the familiar face is Utd class and Everton probably only had a couple, him being one. I think he's been the best left back in the league for a couple of seasons and no reason to thinkhe won't be for another couple IMO.
Report Can't Catch Me June 27, 2013 9:34 PM BST
Don't think they will pay anything approaching 20m for him. I reckon top price 14m. Which is probably the right price.
Report Ibrahima Sonko June 27, 2013 9:41 PM BST
Fair enough, i think he is light years behind cole who is past his best.

Good english left back, not seen him play really well for england.

Just think signing players like Baines is holding man u back in europe and not really the way forward.
Report Crisp77 June 27, 2013 9:42 PM BST
I agree Sonko. Looks like a safe short term purchase but they could find a decent youngster with great potential. Baines isn't even a regular international.
Report buzzer June 27, 2013 9:45 PM BST
It is understood United have made an offer to Everton for Baines, with reports suggesting their opening bid was between £10 million and £12m.

While that figure is way below what the Toffees believe is the market value for the 28-year-old, who is now challenging Ashley Cole as England's first-choice left back, the club consider it irrelevant as they have no intention of letting him go.

Manager Roberto Martinez, who succeeded Moyes at Goodison Park, is due back in the country tomorrow after his commitments as an American television pundit for the Confederations Cup are over.
Report Can't Catch Me June 27, 2013 9:46 PM BST
Each to their own mate and respect your opinion. But I've seen quite a lot of him as I always watch Everton half a dozen times a season or so live. And I think he's class. Better than what Utd have. Loads of top players havent performed well for England tbf so wouldn't worry about that! Agree there might be better in Europe, but they would be a much bigger risk. To sign a ready made Prem proven player at his peak is what the likes of Utd need to do IMO.

The only negative for him might be that he seems to have a slightly abnormal understanding with Pienaar and the two of them seem to be so much better when playing together. He might not click as well with anyone at Utd.
Report everton1978 June 27, 2013 9:48 PM BST
20 better than Baines under 20 million!? Ignorant and patently untrue. He's been the best in this country for the last 2 years by a country mile. His peers rate him and he figures highly in all the stats throughout Europe, not just the prem league.
Report toffee87 June 27, 2013 9:48 PM BST
United would get 6 years out of Baines at least - they were happy enough to pay £25m for an injury prone 29 yr old striker and put him on £12m/yr salary
They will get 3 years max out of RVP

I see what you are saying, all valid.

Just remember his england performances didnt excite me, but then again playing for england is rather worthless.

To say he is a country mile better than cole is...
Report Can't Catch Me June 27, 2013 9:58 PM BST
Cole at his best was definitely better for me, but Baines has been better recently. Probably wasn't that much between them season before last but Cole has waned a bit and Baines continued to improve.
Report Crisp77 June 27, 2013 10:00 PM BST
If it was a case of medals on the table Baines might see his League two champion medal trumped by Cole's haul Confused
Report everton1978 June 27, 2013 10:00 PM BST
You started it by saying he's light years behind Cole. The truth lies somewhere between. Cole has been exceptional but is on the decline IMO. Baines is getting better and really has been world class for 2 seasons. In terms of assists, set pieces, goals and link up play there isn't a left back to rival him. He's also a class defender btw

Is Baines going to improve man u by much and how much

Baines is probably going to be the no1 left back for england in the next 3 years.

my question was, does it improve man u ?

Given that man u are built on a spine, centre backs do the defending etc

IS. I think Evra had a reasonable season so don't think Baines is going to massively improve them. There would definitely be other priorities in the Utd side IMO. That's why I think there must be something in the Moyes wanting a familiar face theory.

But on the strict 'would he improve them' question, Id say yes.

Report Pandorica June 27, 2013 11:09 PM BST
Will signing him improve United? Yes... obviously. Because he'd be an addition (for the moment) rather than a replacement.
Is a decent left-back top priority, I'd say not but unless he's the only signing we make that's ok too.
The problem I have is a more general one of a manager simply signing what he knows. If Baines is the extent of that, fair enough. If we end up with Fellaini and half of Everton's backroom staff as well, that would be a worry.
Report themover June 27, 2013 11:26 PM BST
I think Baines is better than Evra and therefore I'd say it would be an improvement.
Report alexmillwall June 28, 2013 7:53 AM BST
Cole has been the best defensive fullback in the world for the last 5 years, if you watch him play he hardly makes an error, makes all the right decisions, is fit, fast enough to keep up with the fastest wingers... however he's lacking when he has to go forward, does some basic work but nothing exceptional and wont create a goal for the team all season- a part of baines' game that has really developed.

Obviously this is a strength of Evras game as well, goals/assists come naturally, BUT he can be found wanting when up against a decent winger. Baines is a combo of the 2, sound def and adds quality in atk, plus he has a v healthy attitude towards life and is loyal/ dependable which adds value in the long term, AND deserves a crack at the big time with a quality team.. gd move for both sides.
Report ours4keeps June 28, 2013 8:30 AM BST
Should be a good signing but as Pand says, it is a worry that the new guy seems to be trying to create a mini Finch Farm there. The only recent comparison I can make is Hodgson at Liverpool and that great left back he brought with him - Mr P.Konchesky.

Report HRH The Lager Khan June 28, 2013 1:03 PM BST
Baines would be a great signing for Utd. Think of the damage he causes for Everton down the left linking up with Pienaar, then magnify that by a team which generally enjoys a much higher share of possession and spends most of its time going forward. Definitely better than Evra and could enjoy 3 or 4 really good seasons at Old Trafford raking up the assists.
