effectively he retired years ago by going to america. Still he was a very important of a great Man Utd team and fair play to him. Couldn't go past them like Giggsy and his tackling was just about better than Scholes BUT what sets Beckham apart from ANYONE else was his ability time and time again in providing killer balls into the penalty area that even Andy Cole couldn't miss from!!
Goalscorers always seem to get the credit but for me the hardest thing in football is having the knack and ability to create the assists that lead to the goals... and Beckham did that week in week out at Utd. Look at the 2 corners he whipped in to set up the goals in the '99 champs league final.
Can anybody name me a better passer of the ball than David Beckham???

Never seen so much rubbish written about one player - And that takes some doing, being as he's been around for the most part at the same time as Frank Lampard, who according to some of the geniuses on here is borderline morbidly obese, and has scored 200 goals that have all been mi****, shinners and penalties.
Beckham was the last player in an England shirt to make me feel like I gave a toss about the national team. He's no all time great, but those describing him as merely good are doing him a disservice. One of the great bandwagons for the pub bores of recent years was he was only a shirt selling tool once he left United. For a modern day British footballer, he seems a decent bloke too.

Using Shilton as a counter argument for someone alleged to have still been accumulating the caps when past his sell by date is skating on thin ice, imo!
If anyone say Beckham was great, they either do not understand football or they are infatuated with him.
Greatness is a word bandied about way too frequently in sport but especially football, it is a word that should only be reserved for true great players, Messi is great, both Ronaldo's are great, Zidane was great, Ronaldinho was great, Figo was Great, Henry was great, Bergkamp was great - Beckham was not great, he was good, very good at a push, but not great.
He won a lot of cheap caps towards the end of his career, most notably when the media put pressure on Mcalren to recall when he was clearly way past his best and effectively went into semi - retirement when he went to "the Galaxy", but during his best days I loved the way he played for his country, he never failed to put a shift in.
Biggest problem with Beckham was he could of been alot better if he;d not bothered with all the media nonsense, that's why fegie got rid of him.
The biggest disgrace however is the fact his retirement has received wall to wall coverage when just 5 days ago a player at least twice as good as him hardly got a footnote for retiring, i'll miss scholes as a player far more than 'becks'

So Alan shearer can't be classed as a quality player because he didn't win much silverware?
And as for big clubs not wanting him, Real Madrid offered him a new deal but he turned it down. I'd also class AC Milan as a pretty big club too.

People forget how good he was in his mid 20s. Anchored United to winning 6 titles in 8 seasons plus the CL. Terrific player he was back then.

To be fair to Beckham he never used to let England down and his technique was very good.

He has started 16 games less than Giggs in the Champions League but has only 9 assists while giggs has 29 !All the bs about his great free kicks and passing...so why so w@nk scoring and assist record !?

That could be contested, but in any case it's a different thing from saying he's "possibly the most famous man on the planet."
As someone said, the problem with Beckham is that his fame has always outdone his footballing ability. As for "legend",. A decent player and in all likelihood a decent person, but never a great player. He just never had enough.
