Very good (almost great) player |

Refuse to hear a bad word said against him.
Model pro imo and arguably the only player of his generation to always give 100% in an England shirt. |

as over rated as elvis Costello

As overrated as that Irish band U2 aswell shocking music barring 1 or 2 records

According to him he was twice voted 2nd best player in the world ??? Bizarre he was never even the 2nd best player at Man Utd.

effectively he retired years ago by going to america. Still he was a very important of a great Man Utd team and fair play to him. I ll remember him more so as a man utd player than as captain of England which was a soap opera with the media going overboard trying to make him into something he was not

Quite. A good player, nice guy. Nowhere near great. |

Chris waddle had it spot on earlier on 5live.
Good, not great, player. |

By:
SKY Sports news earlier listing his trophies they even included 4 charity shields, good player good career but we'll still be hearing all about him for the next 40 years. Typical Beckham hype

Marvellous player for Man United.
Couldn't go past them like Giggsy and his tackling was just about better than Scholes BUT what sets Beckham apart from ANYONE else was his ability time and time again in providing killer balls into the penalty area that even Andy Cole couldn't miss from!! Goalscorers always seem to get the credit but for me the hardest thing in football is having the knack and ability to create the assists that lead to the goals... and Beckham did that week in week out at Utd. Look at the 2 corners he whipped in to set up the goals in the '99 champs league final. Can anybody name me a better passer of the ball than David Beckham??? Some people think that just being a good passer of the ball isn't enough, If that player is Beckham then I have to disagree. |

Never seen so much rubbish written about one player - And that takes some doing, being as he's been around for the most part at the same time as Frank Lampard, who according to some of the geniuses on here is borderline morbidly obese, and has scored 200 goals that have all been mi****, shinners and penalties.
Beckham was the last player in an England shirt to make me feel like I gave a toss about the national team. He's no all time great, but those describing him as merely good are doing him a disservice. One of the great bandwagons for the pub bores of recent years was he was only a shirt selling tool once he left United. For a modern day British footballer, he seems a decent bloke too. |

By:
But you can't relax because he will be back on your screens in weeks.
Small talent spread extra thin. |
|
By:
also won about 30 caps more than he deserved
|
|
By:
agree with geos, would have been a travesty if he had beaten shiltons record
|
|
By:
Using Shilton as a counter argument for someone alleged to have still been accumulating the caps when past his sell by date is skating on thin ice, imo!

If anyone say Beckham was great, they either do not understand football or they are infatuated with him.
Greatness is a word bandied about way too frequently in sport but especially football, it is a word that should only be reserved for true great players, Messi is great, both Ronaldo's are great, Zidane was great, Ronaldinho was great, Figo was Great, Henry was great, Bergkamp was great - Beckham was not great, he was good, very good at a push, but not great. He won a lot of cheap caps towards the end of his career, most notably when the media put pressure on Mcalren to recall when he was clearly way past his best and effectively went into semi - retirement when he went to "the Galaxy", but during his best days I loved the way he played for his country, he never failed to put a shift in. Biggest problem with Beckham was he could of been alot better if he;d not bothered with all the media nonsense, that's why fegie got rid of him. The biggest disgrace however is the fact his retirement has received wall to wall coverage when just 5 days ago a player at least twice as good as him hardly got a footnote for retiring, i'll miss scholes as a player far more than 'becks' You do have to ask however - do you really think he would of had the career he's had if he looked like luke chadwick, no. |

A player should be judged on the silverware he has amassed.
USA trophies account for zero. If he was a great there is no way he would of gone to America because a big club in Europe would of wanted him |
|
By:
So Alan shearer can't be classed as a quality player because he didn't win much silverware?
And as for big clubs not wanting him, Real Madrid offered him a new deal but he turned it down. I'd also class AC Milan as a pretty big club too. Beckham is an icon and possibly the most famous man on the planet. Legend. |

i wonder who has sold the most shirts, not a measure of greatness but certainly helps the club and the sport in general

Great list of footballers Pete, sorry but still not convinced.... Lampard!! Give over
![]() I always used to wind up my United mate by telling him... imagine if Shearer would've signed for you instead of Andy Cole.. with Beckham out on the right pinging them balls in, Shearer would've been netting 40 a season and you would've won even more than what you did. |

A tattooed tw@t. As dull as dish water, a vacuous preening ponce obssesed with celebrity. Never has someone with so little made so much, a true Icon of our age.

People forget how good he was in his mid 20s. Anchored United to winning 6 titles in 8 seasons plus the CL. Terrific player he was back then.

To be fair to Beckham he never used to let England down and his technique was very good.
Couldn't beat a player though and was a little one tricked. Very good player not a great one imo. |

He nearly always let England down in big tournaments
David Beckham pointed an accusing finger at a mud-pack penalty spot when he skied his crucial kick into the stands and almost out of the ground at the Stadium of Light as England crashed out of Euro 2004. Sadly, for England's captain and national icon, getting his excuses in first may not be enough to stop him being on the end of some serious accusations at the end of a tournament he must view as a massive personal disappointment. Beckham's missed spot-kick, his third in succession for England, put them under instant pressure as they lost the quarter-final 6-5 on penalties to host Portugal. And as he retreated disconsolately to receive the support of his England colleagues in the centre circle, Beckham could not escape the simple fact that it was a moment that summed up his tournament. Of all the big players expected to deliver for England in Portugal, Beckham was the one who singularly failed to step forward. |

The most hyped player in the history of football. Why is his scoring record and assist record so w@nk for a so called great player ? He has started 16 games less than Giggs in the Champions League but has only 9 assists while giggs has 29 !All the bs about his great free kicks and passing...so why so w@nk scoring and assist record !?

No way did he let England down at tournaments he was always one of our best players.

sent off 1998
played poorly 2002, shouldn't have gone because he was injured but assured everyone he was ok, then jumped out of a challenge allowing Brazil to equalise. 2004 I've posted above, was absolute garbage and missed another penalty when England were leading France 1-0 before losing 1-2. 2006, poor again scored from a free kick and he said himself after giving up the captaincy Beckham was forced to leave the pitch against Portugal in the 52nd minute with an Achilles injury that will force him out of action for six weeks. That England went on to lose the game on penalties made Beckham's announcement even more emotional. He said: "I came to this decision some time ago but I had hoped to announce it on the back of a successful World Cup. Sadly that wasn't to be. "This decision has been the most difficult of my career to date. But after discussing it with my family and those closest to me I feel the time is right. "My performance during this World Cup has not been good enough I realise that but the team did their very best but that wasn't enough and both myself and all the players regret that and are hurt by that more than people realise. "I wish to thank all the players for their support during my time as captain, as well as Peter Taylor, Sven and all the coaches. "I would also like to thank the press and, of course, all the England supporters who have both been great to me and my team-mates. I want them to know for me it has been an absolute honour. "Finally, I have lived the dream, I am extremely proud to have worn the armband and been captain of England and for that I will always be grateful." |

Alias - funnily enough planet Earth.
Whatever corner of the globe you go to, whatever continent, you can pretty much guarantee that the majority of people there young and old, male and female will have heard of Beckham. There aren't too many other people in the world you can say that about. |
