Rule like Barca or liverpool?? Madrid was the only team that ever truly ruled europe winning 5 consecutive european cups in the 50s and bayern came close in the 70's winning 3 in a row. As great as all of the other teams who have won it like milan, barca, liverpool, united etc there was gaps in between winning it so they hardly ruled mate...they ruled the year they won it then someone else did.
Report lump0n May 8, 2013 5:35 PM BST
Liverpool won it 77 and 78

i know mate but its hardly RULING europe is it? superb acheivement getting back to backs don't get me wrong but like i said only Madrid have ever properly ruled europe for a great length of time
Report steview84 May 8, 2013 5:54 PM BST
4 times in 8 years liverpool won it
Report Wallflower May 8, 2013 5:57 PM BST
big achievement but it also means half the time they didnt win it - again, hardly ruling Europe
Report LordBobbin May 8, 2013 6:01 PM BST
Madrid pretty much organised the European Cup themselves, which was part of the reason why they won it six times in those early years.   The real question we should ask is why they're seen as such giants in European football when they've only won it three times in the last 47 years!   On that count, AC Milan (having spread their wins far more evenly) are the real European giants.

yes stevie like i said great achievment winning it 77,78 but its hardly ruling europe when 4 other teams won it aswell in that 8 years
Report Paddy Mc May 8, 2013 6:06 PM BST
jesus lordb i don't wanna have to get the measuring tape out! Was just pointing out imo barca or liverpool have never ruled europe though they've had great teams!
Report LordBobbin May 8, 2013 6:07 PM BST
It is true, though, that Man U have never been seen as the one team to beat, in the way that Barca, Madrid, Milan, Juve and, dare I say it, even Liverpool have been at various points.
Report LordBobbin May 8, 2013 6:09 PM BST
Sorry Paddy. Wasn't trying to tape things out. Just pointing out that Madrid's nine titles sound more impressive than they actually are.
Report Paddy Mc May 8, 2013 6:14 PM BST
not really i'm sure everyone wanted to beat them in 2000 after they'd done the treble and they were consistently for 8/9 years in the latter stages including a number of finals and semis so teams defo would have wanted to beat them.
Report Paddy Mc May 8, 2013 6:16 PM BST
oh and your spot on about madrid mate but it still says they won 5 in a row and 9 in total!
Report LordBobbin May 8, 2013 6:17 PM BST
Of course teams wanted to beat them. They've been a decent European name since 1999 (perhaps even before then to a small extent).  But Man U have never been the one team everybody else feared above all others or expected to win the CL.

Very strange few years for tyrants. Ben Ali, Mubarak, Kim Jong Il, Assad likely on his way and now Herr Ferg.

Report buzzer May 8, 2013 6:26 PM BST
Nottingham Forest and their rag tag bunch ruled Europe once upon a time. How many times have they been in the competition and how many times have they been victorious?
Report LordBobbin May 8, 2013 6:28 PM BST
Even Aston Villa won it one year!  Laugh
Report Paddy Mc May 8, 2013 6:31 PM BST
buzzer mate you have just give me the perfect example of the point I was trying to make yes clough did an amazing job even to get forest into europe let alone win back to backs but they hardly ruled europe did they! gonna leave this thread before i repeat myself anymore!
