Anyway, was about to post about this.
So the match fixing is bigger than they thought according to the BBC with hundreds of officials, players and club officials involved and it all leads back to the Asians.

There is nothing in that article that is really surprising. I know we always hear this no match fixing in England, it's an Eastern European problem - but does anyone truly believe this?

The Champions League thing doesn't surprise me either, you get a lot of dead rubber games or teams to be winning to go through. Eg. teams needing to catch up about a 7 goal difference. The English teams are often already qualified by the last game in group stages, and have suffered some bad losses in those games - are they taking their eye off the ball, or is something more sinister in action.

You'd have to be very naive to believe that the world's most watched league that is extremely popular in Asia, has never had a match fixed by an Asian betting syndicate.

there have been previous cases of floodlights going to get games abandoned. I also remember an incident involving a Charlton v Liverpool game years ago when the floodlights were again supposed to go out mid-game but the syndicate were stitched up when one security guard went to the police.

It's absolutely impossible to beleive that the South Korea v Italy game at the 2002 world cup wasn't fixed. Nothing that day was going to prevent South korea going through.

The ref that day was suspended from football later that year when after signalling 6 minutes of stoppage time in an Ecuador league game with LDU losing, he allowed them to score after 99 and 101 minutes and blew straight after the winning goal.

Match-fixing: Champions League tie played in England 'was fixed'

A Champions League tie played in England is one of 380 matches across Europe investigators say was fixed.
European police did not reveal the identity of the match they believe was corrupt in England.
But Europol did say that they had uncovered an organised crime syndicate based in Asia that was co-ordinating the operation.
Some 425 match officials, club officials, players and criminals are suspected of being involved.
At a news conference in The Hague, Netherlands, Europol claimed:
The fixed Champions League tie in England took place in "last three or four years";
The identity of that match cannot be revealed due to "ongoing judicial proceedings";
Other "corrupt" matches included World Cup and European Championship qualifiers and "several top football matches in European leagues";
In Germany-based matches alone, criminals wagered £13.8m (16m euros) on r!gged matches and made £6.9m in profits
Officials fear this is as the "tip of the iceberg".
Rob Wainwright, director of Europol - the European Union's law enforcement agency, said:"This is the work of a suspected organised crime syndicate based in Asia and operated with criminal networks around Europe.
"It is clear to us this is the biggest-ever investigation into suspected match-fixing in Europe. It has yielded major results which we think have uncovered a big problem for the integrity of football in Europe.
Analysis

Gordon Farquhar
BBC sports news correspondent
"These gambling rings are basically having to bribe people to play badly or to fix results and then they are wagering large amounts of money, often in Asia, on the outcome of games knowing that they can cheat the bookmakers because they have inside information.

"It's easy to imagine how you can fix something when it is one person against another. When it's two teams of 11 it is more difficult and presumably you need collusion from more than one person. Referees can give penalties and things can be ruled offside when they are not, but you would imagine they need several people to be sure."

"We have uncovered an extensive criminal network."

Europol, which has been investigating for 18 months, said suspected matches included World Cup and European Championship qualifiers, two Champions League ties and "several top football matches in European leagues".
In addition to the £13.8m wagered on Germany-based matches, payments of £1.73m are thought to have been paid to those involved. The biggest payment to an individual was £121,000, according to investigators.
Europol believes a crime syndicate based in Asia was liaising with criminal networks throughout Europe. It believes match-fixing has taken place in 15 countries and 50 people have so far been arrested.
In total, 30 countries and close to 700 matches worldwide were examined. Many of the allegations involved matches in lower divisions around Europe.
Criminal convictions have been secured in Germany, Finland, Hungary, Slovenia and Austria following investigations.
Asked specifically about the allegations surrounding the Champions League tie held in England, Wainwright declined to identify the match because of "ongoing judicial proceedings".
However he did say it happened in the last three to four years, before adding: "The focus has been on other countries, not the United Kingdom. However we were surprised by the scale generally of the criminal enterprise and just how widespread it was.
"It would be naive and complacent of those in the UK to think such a criminal conspiracy does not involve the English game and all the football in Europe."

It's not even just the top level either. Take say League 1 and League 2 games, there is not a lot of focus on these leagues, the players are not earning that much.

Report Biscuit1979 February 4, 2013 12:08 PM GMT
People would probably argue that premier league players are too rich to bother taking bungs to fix matches. But when you've got a multi millionaire like John Terry willing to take 10k bungs to show someone round the Chelsea training ground, i'm sure he could be bought off for 50-100k to help fix a game.

And what if a syndicate targeted someone like Etherington with a known gambling problem and huge debts. I'm sure he wouldn't have needed much persuading.

Shows you how naive the general perception of match fixing "couldn't possibly exist in this country" is. The English game has a white image that is too white too believe. Every time something remotely dodgy is mentioned with regards to an English team it is immediately squashed or rubbished by the authorities. And it's exactly that sort of attitude which will lead to nothing being done about it.

Betting in running must have been a great invention for match fixers, cos theres less time for other things to influence the thing you have fixed

I guess key positions for a fix are the GK and the referee, as they have the best chance to alter a game or result

The problem Biscuit with saying the ref in Barce vs Chelsea was just outright trying to fix the match for Barcelona as I believe you are suggesting (maybe you are not), is the terrible red card decision against Abidal. If you are actively trying to help a team to win you don't send off a player on their team.

This tends to make me think it was just a bad ref well out of his depth, because where would the fix be? You can fix overs as a ref by giving dodgy decisions, it's a lot harder to fix unders style bets though.
