"The bottom line is that this is turning more into a political election than a sports award"

Can't argue with that. Joachim Low voting for Ozil and Neuer was laughable. I think the Argie manager voted for 3 Argentinians. All a bit silly.

But Messi still out performed Ronaldo and broke numerous records.

If the goals tally was reversed and Ronaldo had got 91 goals and Messi had still beaten him then Roy would have a point.

If you gave all the clubs , fans , managers an opportunity to have Ronaldo or Messi at their club then Messi would win it hands down. It has nothing to do with popularity he is simply the better player.

I liked the Algerian manager voting for Karim "of Algerian descent" Benzema as the best player in the world. :)

Diego maradona was no-saint, but no-one said he wasnt the best. i dont accept what you re saying Cursor, at the end of the day this award is given to the worlds best playerthere isnt a more obvious thing in sport that Messi is the best at what he does

Freddie, the Ballon D'or is given to the best player of the year, so if you guys are saying since Messi scored more goals than Ronaldo even if his team didn't win any relevant titles in 2011 you should admit Ronaldo deserved it since he scored more goals than Messi only winning a Copa Del Rey.

that doesnt make a whole lot of sense cursor. you re leaving out the contributions of all the other players involved!

Cursor.

In 2011 the goals tally was almost identical. 60 to Ronaldo, 59 to Messi.

Ron won the copa del rey. Messi won la liga, champions league, super cup and world club cup. Surely you can see that Messi had the edge there.

In 2012, yes Ronaldo won the league and super cup, and Messi only won the copa del rey but Messi broke every single goalscoring record going, so this would give him the edge individually.

Ronaldo is a very good player but lacks that indefinable quality that makes a truly great player

I disagree. Ronaldo is a truly great player. He's just unfortunate to be playing at the same time as Messi and the Barca golden era.

I just think people are looking at the number of goals for the defining factor for this award and I fear some deserving players will be overlooked if this trend continues. Sneijder the year Inter won everything more than deserved it for his role on those titles.

id agree with that cursor. bisco i watched madrid at weekend, ronaldo cant pass a ball 5 yards. that is not a truly great player

To be considered one of the really great players in history you have to have extreme talent.
But also there has to be something different, something individual about the way you play.
This is why players like Best are in some ways greater...they had not been seen before!

Likeability I think is what you are looking for LFC.

Maradona was widely liked and his antics only added to his story, woeful example.

I don't think there has ever been a top top triffic player as widely disliked as Ronaldo. Hated in south america, most of spain, england....etc.

Roy as usual you are just making excuses for not being correct. You are trying to find reasons why Ronaldo didnt win it rather than accept that he is not the best player in the world at the moment which is what the award is for.

Are you suggesting that more clubs would prefer Ronaldo than Messi ? of course not and thats because Messi is the better player. Defending deep , back tracking , not likeable enough , poltical voting are just excuses.
By:

Roy not necessarily likeability although Best for all his foibles was someone who was naturally so
To be great you have to be unique...Best Pele,Cruff, Muller, Puskas Maradonna (and Greaves, i have to include!)
These players are different.A great artist has his own unique style.

Whilst you can't against Messi being the better player, one of Mourinho's good points from the interview is that Ronaldo has now played in 3 countries and been the star of 2 major sides. Messi has only ever played in his Barca 'bubble' with players he's known for his entire adult life.
By:

True. In Ronaldos case he moved upwards to a better club each time and got better as a player but any change for Messi is going to be a step down.

Interesting stats.

1. Out of 162 national team captains that voted, only 15 chose the exact winning combination; ranking Lionel Messi 1st, Cristiano Ronaldo 2nd, and Andrés Iniesta 3rd.

Surprisingly, none of the captains of the 40 top teams in the world (according to FIFA), voted for this winning combination. Likewise, only 19 coaches (also out of 162) voted for this combination"

2. Four captains and two coaches did not think any of Messi, Ronaldo or Iniesta were worthy of appearing in their top three

3. In total, 44 voters did not mention Messi in their top three at all; 18 international captains, 13 international coaches, and 13 media representatives.

4. A total of 141 voters did not include Ronaldo in their top three. These include 58 international captains, which means that more than a third (35 percent) of captains omitted Ronaldo from their top three; 47 international coaches, and 36 media representatives.

It is never a downward step to break away from the norm and challenge yourself...Sadly, the expense of his transfer may rule that out and his desire to stay there, but I am sure he has at least thought about it.
