the Barca clan don't seem to have much respect for him do they
Messi don't rate him in the Top 4 players in the world either |

it is amazing, i think pepe with an emotional development of an 8 years old boy, will definitely struggle outside his comfort zone of barca. i would be laying any team outside barca managed by him.

Well lets get this straight I'm sure he does but other factors have meant he votes otherwise. |

Pepe will be a gamble for whichever club he next goes to. Could be amazing but could just as easily fail.

yes and ronaldo also doesnt track back even wen loses the ball. i had them backed v city at home, he lost the ball and stood with his hands on his hips.

Well according to the comments, this is misleading, which I would think is highly likely.. Before the ceremony Pep Ronaldo and Messi were joking around. He brushes against Pep and puts him hand on his shoulder to apologise....Would make more sense than blanking him, surely he's not that big of a baby but then the Catalan blood is thick so you never know....

They didn't score the same, Messi scores more. They don't even assist the same, Messi completely bosses him in that respect as well. If Ronaldo was this winger that Mourinho claims then he should be out assisting Messi, but he doesn't because his primary role is a goalscorer Way over your head this stuff. He may not have scored as many as Messi (I don't have the stats)but I am sure his record was freakish especially when you consider, as Mourinho states, that he plays in a deeper role than Messi and has more defensive responsibility. Messi is a false 9, dropping off the front and instigating play in the final third..I think you'd expect a false 9 (especially playing for Barca) to have more assists than a winger....It's not like they hit the byline in spain and whip the ball in is it? Most of the creation comes from inverted wingers, playmaking 8's or tucked in 10's round the corner as Brendan would say. Ronaldo was the key figure in a madrid side that broke all records overturning 'the greatest team of all time'scored in 6 el classico's in a row and had a majestic euros. Messi did not have an international tournament to play in. Based on this calender year Ronaldo deserved it, there is no doubt about it..but people seem to be voting on who they think is the best player. Might as well give it to Messi in advance for the next few years because unless he gets injured no one will be voted ahead of him because people are clearly not understanding what the ballan door is about. |

Mourinho does make some good points but also some poor ones.
I think he's wrong to call Ronaldo a winger. He's most definitely not a winger any more. Since when do you see him taking a defender on down the line and getting a cross over? Hardly ever. He is nearly always looking to come inside for a shot. The old fashioned winger is rare in football these days, nearly all the top sides play with a front 3 and Ronaldo has license to play across the forward line wherever he chooses. And so what if Ronaldo comes back to defend set pieces? He's over 6ft, not much point in midget Messi coming back is there? I also hear people going on about trophies won over the year. The Ballon D'or is an INDIVIDUAL award for the player deemed to have performed best over the year. Messi got 91 goals, broke muller's world record, the la liga goalscoring record, hat trick record, champions league record for goals in a game and in a campaign, there was no one better INDIVIDUALLY. No one can deny Ronaldo is an amazing player and one of the best of all time, but individually he didn't perform better than a guy scoring 91 goals. And it's interesting you point out the international tournament, because although he performed well, most people were left with the overriding feeling from Ronaldo's euro performance is his ego costing his country. He demanded the last shoot out penalty because he wanted the glory, then watched it all come crashing down around him as portugal were eliminated without it even getting to his 5th pen. Excellent work. |

It looks like he just knocks him, apologises then there's a bit of awkwardness when they realise who the other person is. Doesn't look at any point as though Ronaldo actually offers his hand for a shake. |

hardly a "classless move" then, dear oh dear.

One or two minor good points cookie ruined by some gibberish at the end.
The good: I think he means more positionally than actually playing the role of the traditional winger. The significance of this (and having to come back for set pieces) is that it is taking away energy away from his attacking efforts. He obviously does not track back as effectively as a regular winger because that would be a total waste of his ability but he still has to get back into shape and do some defensive work. Ballan door should be an individual award but if you look at the history of winners it has always been tied up with winning things. History shows how hard it is to win without performing in the major tournaments and your team winning things. Everything you list is obviously impressive but Ronaldo boasts comparatively impressive stats in the context of a record breaking la liga winning season...doing it in all the big games. You're talking as if Messi has scored 91 goals and Ronaldo has scored 10. I don't know the numbers but I'm sure its very high from a deeper role. 'Champions league record for goals in a game..' You're stretching a bit here are you not...who was that against? Dead rubber group game? The gibberish: His ego cost portugal Based on what? Your perception. So lazy. This penalty thing was non conventional but we have no idea the dynamic behind that decision. He took the winning penalty last against England a few years back and not much was made of that. Judging by the way Nani went and sent Alaves back it looked like a mess organisation wise but I guess that was down to Ronaldo too. |

Gareth Bale @GarethBale11
Another hat-trick for Ronaldo! I think he's the best all round player in the world right now #ballondor2013 :p Just seen this tweet from Bale from last night. I think that puts that to bed. Thanks for coming lads. ![]() |

Biscuit sums it up. Deeper Role? I bet if you studied heatmaps of the players they'd be similar in terms of forwardness. Ronaldo plays off the front man from the left and is constantly driving forward attempting efforts on goal whilst Messi might be positioned more advanced at kickoff but drops to create play so there's no reason to expect him to score and assist more.
The fact that Messi broke the record whilst in a Barca team that didn't win La Liga/CL just makes it an even more remarkable achievement |
|
By:
messi blew the whole thing out of the water by breaking Mullers record. he is the one player above all people would fork out any amount of money to see in a one-off game
its why hes considered up there with geniuses like Maradona and Pele, while Ronnie as great as he is, nobody is putting him in that company and i ve never heard a journalist or commentator say that hes better than messi, that just wouldnt be taken very seriously |
|
By:
Last year Ronaldo scored more than Messi and didn't win it supposedly because he didn't win any titles. This year the roles where reversed and the outcome was the same.

Roy - Does Ronaldo play a much deeper role? Messi quite often comes deep to dictate play too. I'm not sure you could argue either way as both have a free reign to go wherever they like. It's why they're so good and score so many goals.
The CL record was in a knockout game against Leverkusen who had earlier beaten Chelsea and Valencia and currently sit 2nd in the Bundesliga so not exactly no hopers. The ego thing was based on what Nani said after the game. The portugal manager tried to say that he chose the penalty order but Nani came out and said that wasnt true and that Ronaldo himself decided and he wanted the glory of taking the last one. If it'd gone to a 5th pen then fair enough but it seems to me another case of the player putting himself before the good of the team. And i think that's ultimately what separates them. Messi is a team player, Ronaldo isn't. How many times do you see Ronaldo throw his arms in the air frustrated when he doesn't get a pass or someone else messes up. He very rarely celebrates when someone else scores a goal. He threw a major strop when he found out that a couple of team mates didn't vote for him in the ballon d'or, he even gave up his voting rights to Bruno Alves to sneak an extra vote in for himself. Me, me, me. And that is why despite his brilliance, people don't take to him. But overall throughout 2012, no one can argue that Messi didn't perform better. 91 goals is ridiculous. |
|
By:
Seconded.
Surely the most ridiculous thing about the Balon D'or is that Ronaldo claimed to be "injured" and so couldnt vote. This allowed Bruno Alves to come in and vote for him. That sums Ronaldo up , its all about "me me me me" as his penalty antics at the Euros also showed. Messi is by far a better player and the Ronaldo backtracking and defending theory has nothing to do with it. Thats just a convenient excuse for Ronaldo fans to excuse why their hero isnt winning the award. |
|
By:
Oh by the way all those harping on about the muller record get your facts right...When the votes were actually cast back in the fall he was well short of the record
![]() I know you don't like it..but the bottom line is that Messi is far more likeable than Ronaldo and suffers from that MASSIVELY. |

If you put up a heat map of their average positions over the course of a season Ronaldo would be further left and significantly deeper than the more central and advanced Messi. Why do people try and argue black is white? I can't take you seriously going forward with this sort of drivel. |

The question here is that lately the vote isn't going to best player of the season (witch is the point of the trophy). If it was so, Sneijder should've got it in 2010 and Ronaldo in 2011 (scored more than Messi, if that's your main reason for Messi winning it this year).
The issue here is that Messi has the image of a saint while Ronaldo is the arrogant one. There's lots of images of Messi trying to hit opponents deliberadly and dissing teammates (Villa anyone?) and you really believe that Messi thinks Aguero is better than Ronaldo? The bottom line is that this is turning more into a political election than a sports award. |
|
By:
Like I said bicsuit, your post sums up why Ronaldo has no chance even before he's kicked a ball. And this goal record thing is another excuse. When the votes where cast it was not in the equation. A narrative to fit the outcome.

Messi has got it 4 years in a row because people are voting politically and also voting for who they believe is the best player in the world...not who has been the best player for the period of time in question. There is a significant difference. |

Diego maradona was no-saint, but no-one said he wasnt the best. i dont accept what you re saying Cursor, at the end of the day this award is given to the worlds best player
there isnt a more obvious thing in sport that Messi is the best at what he does |
