ESPN reprimand commentator Jon Champion for describing Suarez handball as 'work of a cheat'
Popular ESPN commentator Jon Champion has been officially reprimanded by the FA Cup broadcaster for calling Liverpool striker Luis Suarez a cheat during Sunday’s game against Mansfield.
ESPN released a statement yesterday lunchtime admitting that Champion got it wrong during live commentary from the game Liverpool won 2-1.
The broadcaster was inundated with emails and tweets from angry viewers after Champion watched Suarez control the ball with his hand before scoring Liverpool’s second and said: ‘Well that, I’m afraid, is the work of a cheat. The arm goes towards the ball. Well, he can claim it was an accident but accidents seem to happen where he’s concerned.’
It is understood that Champion spoke to ESPN Head of Football Andrew Hornett who told the 47-year-old that he wished to release a statement.
However, ESPN’s decision to effectively castigate him in public seemed extraordinary, given Champion’s unblemished record as a respected commentator for BBC, ITV and ESPN.
Hornett did not hear the commentary live as he was attending the Swansea versus Arsenal FA Cup clash that took place earlier on Sunday.
However, he is understood to have been concerned after hearing Champion’s comments on playback later on.
Yesterday’s ESPN statement said: 'We take our responsibility to deliver the highest standards of coverage to our viewers.
'ESPN’s editorial policy is for commentators to be unbiased and honest, to call things as they see them. Inevitably this can involve treading a fine line on occasion, especially in the heat of the moment.'
The statement continued: ‘Comments during the Mansfield v Liverpool match caused offence where none was intended and we have spoken to our commentator about this incident.’
Champion last night commentated on the third-round FA Cup tie between Cheltenham and Everton and no further action will be taken against him.
However, broadcasters across the country may now have to think twice about what they say in live commentaries.

Fair play to ESPN for sorting that out asap, we just need the FA to address the issue of how many decisions their refs make against Liverpool and how many decisions we don't get, it's disturbing how "unlucky" we seem to be with decisions.
"we just need the FA to address the issue of how many decisions their refs make against Liverpool and how many decisions we don't get" - Excuse me but how old are you? Bad decisions happen to all teams its swings and roundabouts, that is FOOTBALL! Im only 23 and I know this, typical delusion Liverpool fan "we're crap now so it must be all the refs against us...waaaa waaaa!" PRICK.

Yes hapless all commentators should say just what they want about all players whenever they see cheating on the pitch. It's not like he's jumping on the bandwagon, only calls certain players cheats and gets it wrong or anything is it?

He's commentating. He sees something on the spur of the moment and makes a judgment call. No need to apologise. Shows you the mollycoddled world we live in. Pathetic from ESPN.

Guys Im all for freedom of speech, but having freedom of speech has it's limits and also a responsibility to carry with it. Im sick of the bias anti Liverpool FC sentiment that is on a the rise at the moment. It need to be stopped in it's tracks and only action like that above can bring change IMO.

Has anybody from Liverpool asked for an apology? Free speech is fine - anybody that thinks this is PC clearly needs to get out more. I suspect the lawyers have been on the blower as to call somebody a cheat when it is easy to prove that in this instance it was no such thing is slander (not that any action would be taken by LS but that doesn't really matter). If he had said that about a mansfield player then you lot would be castigating him for ruining a player's career! You carry on thinking it's pc though............

Spyker - If it was a Mansfield player who got away with a handball winner, the loons on here would label him a hero, & this place would implode with laughter smileys.

In my opinion it was a fair comment, he called it as he saw it. Nothing wrong with that. What happens when a ref gives a yellow card for diving? I'm sure I've heard on lots of occasions the commentator calling the player concerned a cheat, which is effectively what the ref is saying.

In that case, he's set a precedent for himself. When he sees defenders manhandle opposition strikers at corners & set-pieces, he now has to balance things up & call them cheats, because that's exactly what they're doing, & he needs to 'call it as he sees it'.

Mr Meaner spot on, in fact every live game should start with the comm saying.. you are about to watch a load of cheats try and win a game that in reality means NOTHING. by cheating.

This is why our countries commentators are poor and make blanket generic statements.
In America when commentating they are blunt and to the point. If a team is rubbish, or a player is a cheat, they call them out on it. They are after all, commentating on the game/teams.
I am fed up of analysts and commentators saying things like he wanted it more...Such a thing is going on about Bradford atm, they are over hyping them, despite the fact that they have won most of their games on penalties.
