Where to start? Supreme talent...we all know that but it is a shame my enjoyment of a perfectly good wonder goal has been spoiled by the hyperbole around it. Best goal ever and the like...trevor sinclairs was better, as was rooney's...shame they didn't have more exotic names.

It should come as no shock that he gets 4 goals in a meaningless friendly against an inexperienced backline and multiple changes. It's fairly typical of the man.

The crux: With the level of talent we see every once in a while he should be at ronaldo and messi's level. As it is he's probably just in the top 10 strikers in the game today and there's not even that many good strikers about! He is, without question one of the most overrated specimens I have come across.

To finish on a positive....what a goal! He is without doubt the best youtube player I have ever seen (i.e. line up his highlights reel and he'd look better than messi and ronaldo put together).

R0y

Report fdunk November 15, 2012 10:42 AM GMT
@roy do you not think that the teams he played in may have started as 1st/2nd favourites because he was their main player? Do you think Barca would have paid 40m and Samuel Eto'o if there wasn't something about him? Then again, you must know more than them...

Look at his goal scoring records for all of those clubs, look at his individual medals and awards and have a real think of strikers over the last decade or so that are better than him. He is an amazing player and his arrogance clouds that occasionally, but you simply cannot question his ability

I think you should probably re-read it, Terry was described as one of the premier leagues best ever defenders. There certainly haven't been too many better than him over the past few years.
After playing over 500 games for Chelsea in 10-12 years and winning the following, that's a pretty fair assessment and certainly a lot more accurate than your claim that he is over rated.

funny that

RVP at the time of your thread was always an injury prone striker, not worthy of inclusion in the first place, including messi, even in the context you provided was ridiculous from the off, having said that I would always have Ronaldo in my team over messi, for reasons I cba to explain, totti agreed, ibra agreed, that's it.

If RVP had entered the champions league 9 times out of 10 (not to mention the other times) at the head of the champions of a national league and also at the head of a barcelona side including messi, xavi, inestia et al and not won at least 1 champions league I'd be thinking something does not add up and would look at it again yes.

I think it says volumes about the player that. And perhaps the leagues he's played in and their strength. Is he perhaps the ultimate flat track bully? Perhaps.

RVP at the time was injury prone and therefore not worthy of his lofty status in the game. If you review said thread you'll see his inclusion was not based on performances.

Messi needed to sustain his performance level (and still does) to be heralded as the greatest player of all time. It was far too early.

Sighs....I'm not saying its the be all and end all. I'm saying its odd that a player of this supposed calibre having won all these titles and gone into the champions league in title winning sides has not won the champions league once. Not once.

Has he even been in a final? Again I don't know. That can't be a coincidence. It is the highest level in the game.

With regards to his performance it was good, with 1 exceptional goal. Can't be great because A) England were poor defensively, B) It was a friendly.

My take on him

I'm of the opinion 90% of us thought he was overrated 2 or 3 seasons ago, thing is we saw him play 2 or 3 times a season. He was lays hyped up and never seemed to perform on the big games "went missing" problem is he must have been having 40 good games a season we didn't see. His record tells us this.
Gets a move to barca and although his record still nearly a goal every two with lots of these games from the bench. We all have that smug feeling when it doesn't work out and he's loaned out to Milan ."knew he wasn't all that, told you he was sh1t never seen him have a good game"

Thing is for the last 3 or so seasons hes been performing to all this hype in just about every televised game he's played in. And that never seen him have a good game label is long gone. The honest amongst us can accept we called it Wong for 8 or so years.
The pig headed amongst were still saying he was overrated before last night.

But if after last night you can't admit you were wrong for ten years then have a little word with yourselves. Tell yourselves is ok to make mistakes you can change your opinion about somebody. Otherwise you will keep on lying to yourselves and eventually sound like a muppet

R0y keane has for once made a point worth noting and at least questioning, this alone has taken me by suprise as his "thoughts" that he likes to note down on here often should be banished to the depths of hell where no man can read them..but thats another story for another thread....

Now the question marks over incredible talent has always resulted around the champions league and may have wondered why he never seemed to score enough...I will come back to that..

First of, no matter how badly Italian football has slipped over the last few years, it is still an elite league to play in.. Thinking football on the world wide scale and how many play it, to play in a top league you automically enter the tiny tiny percentage of elite players....in context of the global game would it even add up to 1%? So here we have a player who has year on year dominated in an elite category, season by season consistent but I disagree with you Roy when you say just a youtube player popping up scoring wonder goals every now and then..The way he plays he is a constant annoyance because of his strength and fight, link up play, he does have every string to his bow.

Now when it comes to the champions league he admitted himself when he was younger he was not bothered when he lost as he believed he would win it again. As he has gotten older I think as well as many others its not the same man when playing, he is to tense, dropping to deep often playing as a playmaker linking the play for both milan clubs in the comp just to be involved. At Barca it didnt work out...But to judge on champion leagues alone is incorrect. Over a season at club football is the best and toughest judge of a player imo and he has been consistent year in year out. Is he up there with Messi and Ronaldo...well he's not far of and imo has almost as much natural ability as Messi and much more than Ronaldo.

lol are you a bit dense? how is that a contradiction, he obviously wanted to score - which means hitting the net - but it a lucky because it was an empty net with no defence and like I've said before 999/1000 he would of missed, that's lucky he got this one, if you can't understand that than I can help you.

Rooney's goal was better because the ball was coming to his feet at pace and had to connect with it in a tight angle surrounded by quality defenders - I already aid even his wasn't that good because it came off his shin but better than Ibrahmovic's, if you can't understand that I can help you.

That's not a contradiction that is you doing what you always do because your argument is always wafer thin. Totti I don't rate for starters the rest I do, he has won the award in a league that is not up to standard - even their fourth champions league place has gone to germany, he's been cack every time he's come to England (bar once)and never made a great impact in Spain, scored a few goals but the quality was evident to see in comparison with his teammates, why did he he stay in italy for so long? he would have been found out in the top leagues - not fixed/ scandal ridden leagues like serie a, it suited him.

It's very simple biscuit, but because you so dense you need explaining to over and over again.

People are praising him all day long and I'm pretty sure they've never seen him in more than 10-20 full games in their livesLaugh, can't do it in the champions league where the big boys play either.

Some think it's a great goal, others not.

Some think him a great player, others not, but ffs change the record.

Is he up there with Messi and Ronaldo...well he's not far of and imo has almost as much natural ability as Messi and much more than Ronaldo.

Pmsl. DZA...don't know where you frequent not to see he is totally overrated but this is the sort of gibberish you read time and time again.

He should not be mentioned anywhere near Ronaldo and Messi....not even close.

Does he have as much natural ability..? That is a closer question but then you could start including the likes of Berbatov as the most talented in the premiership...does not make him the best.

Zlatan grossly overrated. This is as close to fact as opinion gets.

Regards,

R0y.

Berb and him, to even suggest they're comparable shows a total lack of understanding for the game. One is an elite champion player, the other performed at Spuds, and while at Man U were if he had it in him he would have starred but he simply didnt. Berb is a big fish in a small pond, Zlatan is a big fish in a big pond.

However, I would wager big money you have never really watched him apart from the glancing European games and

Report R0ykeane November 16, 2012 2:50 PM GMT
If you try making sense I might be able to respond.

Re the berba/zlatan comparison it's fairly basic stuff.

Berba did not fail at utd based on his talent. There is a strong argument that he has more talent than Rooney for example but will never be the better player.

If you can digest this simple notion you may be worth speaking more to on this subject.

If he had it in him......ie fight, spirit etc,

re berba/zlatan is not basic stuff. Zlatan has been a game changer for a number of top level clubs his whole career, berba performed to that level at an average level spurs team and now at he seems to be doing so at the might of fulham hth's but DID NOT have it in him to truely fight to make it at Man U.. Are you telling me the if Zlatan was at Man U, he would not have the fight, the spirit to make it as he sure as hell does have the talent.
Report R0ykeane November 16, 2012 3:08 PM GMT
I'm not making a direct comparison.

I'm simply stating ability alone does not make a player.

Nobody sane can dispute the boy has ability but he's not even remotely as good as he should be with that ability.

His cult following however are happy to feed off the scraps they get.

I'm basing my opinion on around 40 full matches in various leagues, in various sides and various competitions over various years. 40....more than enough to work out how good a player is. Perhaps I've just managed to catch his 40 worst performances. I suspect not though.

Well seeing as he was Serie A's player of the year for 3 years running that he played there, set a Barcelona club record, scored the winner in a classico, made the Euro 2012 team of the tournament and is currently the top scorer in France i'd suggest that probably isn't far off.

I never said it did, I even agreed with you on that as why Berba failed at United yet to decided to jump the gun on on without really reading my post it seems.
Well you're trying to tell us you watched 40 games with him involved and he in that time did not have a good game? Startling revelation when you consider his personal awards for season performances throughout his career.

The problem we English have is we see a foreign player with a fancy name, with real skills that has never played in England and we like to cling onto any ledge we can and call them the over rated foreigner..If he played in this league he would destroy every defence in it, including every tlented foreigners worst nightmare......the cavemen from Stoke..He would laugh at the likes of Wilkinson and Shawcross as they lay crumbled into bits on the floor around him  once he had crushed them. It is however unlikely he will move now considering his age and contract but it would have been a joy to watch him perform every week in the premiership
Report Biscuit1979 November 16, 2012 3:40 PM GMT
Good point Oracle, most of his detractors are probably the same people who used to say that Messi wasn't the worlds best because he'd never played here and how would he cope against Stoke. Well i think we saw the other night how Ibra would cope against Shawcross!

The same people who think Falcao isn't one of the worlds best strikers because he hasn't played here. Even though he absolutely destroyed an English team last time he played against them.

THAT'S GUNNER HURT ... Zlatan Ibrahimovic poses in Arsenal shirt - but he felt snubbed by Arsene Wenger
By CLIFF HAYES

THIS is how close Arsenal came to signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The super striker posed in a No 9 Gunners shirt 12 years ago after meeting boss Arsene Wenger to discuss a move from Swedes Malmo.
But Ibrahimovic, now 31, revealed: “Arsene gave me the No 9 shirt with Ibrahimovic on it and I was so pleased.
“So then I waited for him to convince me that I should join. But he didn’t even try.
“He never actually made me a serious offer, it was more, ‘I want to see how good you are. Have a trial.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
Arsenal had agreed a £3million fee with Malmo but Ibrahimovic was so angry he stormed out of the Arsenal training ground.
Ibrahimovic went to Ajax instead and Arsenal signed Francis Jeffers from Everton for £8m. The rest, as they say, is history...

Someone like Aguero who is a significantly better striker does not have nearly the same hysteria around him. It's laughable really.

Never did I think I'd see the day when I'd find myself in full agreement with R0ykeane, there have been times when we've disagreed that the sky is blue and grass is green just for the sake of itLaugh but the fact we're coming at this from the same angle speaks volumes.

I would put my life savings on the fact that most people putting him up on a pedestal with genuine footballing God's such as Messi, Ronaldo and Henry - have never seen more than 20 full games of his, they've seen snippets here and there and because it's fashionable - they're jumping on the "Ibra is World Class" bandwagon after one poxy game in a friendly against a genuinely shyte England team including the likes of Shawcross and Cleverely.

Don't quote stats of his, stats can mean whatever people want them to mean when it suits them, player of the year in Italy ? try being player of the year in Spain or England in leagues where you have to put a shift in to actually look good. Try winning the champions league and starring in that winning campaign, try putting in world class performances for Swende against top side in a world cup, Not swan around for 85 minutes and pop up with a wonder goal. Greatness is in consistency, there are no great inconsistent players - not genuinely great players anyhow.

By a fair distance Wayne Rooney. Rooney can be patchy but over the course of a season he'll give you far more than Ibra.

Put it this way, if you lined up the 100 best coaches in the game and asked them to pick one or the other the voting would be something like 71 versus 29.

Which again sums up how overrated he is. No one is talking about Rooney as being the best striker on the planet or in the same sphere as Ronaldo and Messi.
