Its quite funny, not 1 footballer will be nominated yet practically the whole of the UK worship them week in, week out. The Olympians & Murray are rarely in the spotlight yet will have all the votes, a bit strange if you ask meConfused

There's been some amazing achievements but I think Murray winning Olympic gold and the first ever Grand Slam by a Brit for over three quarters of a century will have to be the winner for me.

Amazingly an Olympic gold or two won't be enough this year.  It's between Wiggins and Muzz who have a gold plus incredible, massive other achievements.  Either would be deserving but I'd go for Murray.
Report delpiero7 September 11, 2012 2:41 AM BST
Maybe they can retract Giggs' award from a couple of years ago and award two SPOTYs this year?

So many sportspeople who could have won it easily in other years that won't even make it onto the shortlist of 10 this year.

5 multiple Olympic Gold medalists
Mo Farah
Sir Chris Hoy
Jason Kenny
Laura Trott
that woman what won in the horse dancing

6 Paralympic multiple Gold medalists
David Weir
Sarah Story
Ellie Simmonds
Hannah Cockroft
2 horse dancing ladies

Plus notable single Gold medallists such as Jess Ennis and Ben Ainslie

Bradley Wiggins with the Tour de France and Olympic Gold

Then two major winners in Rory McIlroy and Andy Murray (who obviously also won an Olympic Gold Medal).

Plus a load of people I've forgotten about or can't be arsed to look up at 3am

And not forgetting Joey Barton.

Good luck getting a shortlist out of that lot.

Or Wiggins winning the first ever Tour de France by a Brit ever, and the first cyclist to ever win the Tour de France and an Olympic gold in the same year.

Or Mo Farah winning the first ever Olympic gold 10k by a Brit ever, going on to do the double and being only the sixth of all-time ever.

Murray's achievements are fantastic but they've been done before by other Brits, Wiggins achieved something no other cyclist has ever done and another that no other British cyclist has ever done - he even got in a time machine to re-write the first Brit on a podium in the Tour. Farah also achieved something that no other British athlete has done before and then bettered it.

Murray in any other year would win, but not this year.

You forget that Murray is playing in the most competitive era of Tennis ever and is up against 3 of the all time greats.

The tour de france is a bit of a joke in my opinion.

I saw one stage where Froome was ready ti kick on and he didnt cause he didnt want to detatch Wiggins from the pack.

Team orders a bit like in F1 dont lie well with me.

Bradley Wiggins for me as he actually has a personality.
First Briton to win the Tour de France is a phenomenal achievement. Rest of the choices look rather gay in comparison.

how can you call jess ennis gay. she`s hot stuff
unless ur gay?

Wiggins for me hands down. The first ever Briton to win the Tour de France. To even complete the TDF is the most staggering athletic performance a human can achieve, never mind to win it.

I did a 65 mile bike ride over hills on Sunday and still cant walk, and I've been in training since March to do just one stage of the Tour next July. These guys ride 100+ miles over mountains every day, for three weeks.

Not only that but he won the Dauphine, Paris-Nice and Tour de Romandie. Winning those three stage races and the Tour has never been done before by anyone. Then he gets the whole thing rolling in the Olympics by winning gold in the Time Trial. Brilliant.

Murray has done well, but ffs he gets four majors a year. Its hardly as impressive, and anyway, its only tennis.
Report Outpost September 11, 2012 7:08 PM BST
unfortunately for wiggins it's not the forum vote that decides.

the great british voting public are about as interested in cycling as they are with horseracing, so it will almost certainly be an olympic athlete that wins.

probably ennis for all the TV exposure or murray as he won an olympic gold and has just become the first brit to win a tennis major.

Have you been watching the sky atlantic doc MC?

I expect we can argue you should, who could and who will win till we're all blue in the face. Fact is it's a public vote and a lot will depend on how each event is highlighted on the night. Murray's win last night was on Sky, I still think that makes a big difference to say a sport covered on terrestrial TV. Add into the mix fanatics voting in volume like last year, it's a real tough one to call from a betting perspective.

I wouldn't get bogged down with the 'personality' aspect, it's just the name. Didn't Princess Anne and Red Rum both win it once? There'll be a wave of new support for Murray, like my mum for instance who couldn't stand him right up till the point he started crying at Wimbledon and now thinks he's great. There'll be thousands of people like her.

Probably the first one I'll tune into for a few good years now.

Murray's win last night was on Sky

I do agree here. If that had been on the Beeb, I think Murray's chance would be severely improved.
Report BARNEY15C September 11, 2012 7:13 PM BST
One thing for sure, at least there will be a winner or a shortlist of candidates who actually deserve the award. Can't say that has happened for a few years.
Report jockie4 September 11, 2012 7:14 PM BST
road cycling is drug induced and drug infested. Can't see past that in my opinion. Who was that US cyclist that conquered the Tour so many times??? Or what happened to Contador or Schleck! Too dodgy for me! Give me dour, honest clean sporting heroes. Or maybe we just attach rubber bands to the trophy so it can come bouncing back just like Lances' did.

I wouldn't get bogged down with the 'personality' aspect,

Why do so many people go on about the personality thing of Murray or whoever else?

It's "Sports Personality" not "Sports" "Personality" ffs Crazy
