I seem to remember people saying before last season that Spurs had had their day. When will people begin to realise that this Tottenham squad is actually very good

Last seasons Spurs squad was very good, but you appear to be forgetting that this seasons Spurs squad is likely to be minus Adebayor and Modric.
Report berto77 • June 28, 2012 9:40 AM BST
Good first 11 and 15/16 players, but you need a bigger squad to sustain it.  Not enough options in the front and wide areas to cover for injury, form and suspensions.

Spurs are early 3s to finish in the top 4.  I'd lay that.
Report blackburn1 • June 28, 2012 9:40 AM BST
Adebayor?
Report berto77 • June 28, 2012 9:43 AM BST
That's not meant to sound as an attack on your club.  Just my opinion as an impartial observer.  Spurs are great to watch and hope they do well.  Just can't see it unless you make 4/5 top quality signings.
Report blackburn1 • June 28, 2012 9:43 AM BST
Jury out on AVB for me but most of the forum could manage the Spurs squad to top 4, Redknapp did it working part time, he's won 1 trophy in 30 years, Jol nearly did it too.

If Mourinho managed this squad they'd be joint favs to win the league
Report jed.davison • June 28, 2012 9:43 AM BST
Exactly blackburn.

Adebayor is a non-trier of the first order, and massively over-rated. Spurs would have finished higher if his starts had been dished out between Pavlyuchenko and Defoe, and he had stayed in the stand at the Etihad.

Modric is a decent player, but only an idiot would contend that he is some sort of world-beater.

We will miss Modric more than Adebayor, but neither of them is irreplaceable.

Adebayor is a useful player desperate to stay at Spurs, if he does it will be for a massive pay cut. Theres about 50000 blokes in the country who could chuck a ball to Adebayor, VDV, Bale, Modric, Walker, Sandro, Lennon etc etc and expect them to finish top 4 minimum. Its an endictment of Redknapp that he almost managed to phuck it up, they finished 4th despite bigmouth.
Report Biscuit1979 • June 28, 2012 9:51 AM BST
He got 17 goals last season, was the leagues 4th top scorer.

I'm not saying they're world beaters but i'd have thought it was fairly obvious that Spurs would be weakened by him and Modric not being there.

As for whether you'll be a worse team, who knows, depends who you sign obviously. I agree with most though, 4th last season is as good as it gets for Spurs.

I'm going solely by what I see on the TV, so as a Spurs fan you'll know way better than me, but just about every time I see Modric play he's immense.  Why is it that you don't consider him as one of the top midfielders in the game?
Report berto77 • June 28, 2012 10:00 AM BST
Modric is the kind of player who is most appreciated when he's gone.  As other top clubs have found, notably Liverpool and Man United.

Should score more goals though.
Report jed.davison • June 28, 2012 10:03 AM BST
Rob, please note that I'm not knocking Modric, far from it. He is a lovely little player, with superb ball skills and unusual strength for a man his size. He's just not the player a lot of people think he is i.e a game-changer. I would keep him and add a game-changer given the choice, but Redknapp was right to think that £40m should have been trousered in exchange. Only Levy's intransigence denied him his move last pre-season, and it is to Modric's immense credit that he went about his business seemingly unaffected by his natural disappointment.

Defoe - 11 in 25 games
Adebayor - 17 in 33 games

No idea on actual minutes played.

I don't care if Defoe got a goal every 10 minutes, there must be a reason why Harry didn't play him. And in any case that's still irrelevant as my point isn't about how good Defoe is, it's that you'll be a weaker squad without Adebayor. Only a fool would argue that the leagues 4th top scorer (and 4th highest assists too) won't be a loss to the squad.
Report jed.davison • June 28, 2012 10:09 AM BST
He would of course be a loss to any squad in numerical terms, but my point is that at the prices and wages quoted, he is about as much of a bargain as the Trident missile system. Spurs will of course need to buy two-centre-forwards before the start of the season anyway having lost Pavlyuchenko and possibly van der vaart, and spending so much of the budget on a guy who puts it all in about twice a season makes no sense whatsoever.

Problem with anyone like jed who watches a game on tv is an expert who fail to see what the tv doesn't show.

Modfric is THE GO-TO player in the prem,i.e.he turns defense into attack without giving the ball away which is something you can not say about anyone else in the prem.

not sure why that would qualify the opinion to be any better than others.

There is no doubt Modric is an excellent player...but he's certainly not irreplaceable in the team. For me he's a quality workhorse.

If Levy can get a good fee for him (which he will if he go's then fine)...the statement has been made with Bales new contract.

AVB is a brilliant acquisition, unlike the ill fated Ramos situation. He's not tied to another club so no compensation needed and no doubt Levy has negotiated a good (cheap) exist strategy should things go wrong...

Brilliant signing if it happens. People forget how intelligent he is. He was Jose's trusted sidekick for many years. WHat he did at chelsea is best forgotten, theyre a different club to others, a club where the owner has close relationships with the players. That doesnt happen at other clubs.

If Modric wants to leave then he should,I dont think Spurs will suffer, and I look forward to what AVB can do in charge.

He was exactly that, he did the deep homework for Jose, the true tactical research. Jose and him fell out when AVB decided he wanted to go alone, and what he did for Porto was amazing.

We had coaches like Joe Jordan, in the past Chris Houghton. I'd happily take a tactical, intelligent genius any day.

I couldn't ask for a better manager to come on board (given all the variables)and if it pays off this is the time Spurs will move forward.

If it doesnt work, I suspect AVB will be gone in 7 or so months with a small pay off.

Harry did a great job....But he was never the man to take us that next step forward. AVB represents an ambitious young winner.

Take his ill fated chelsea stint out of things....and this is potentially the signing of the season (if it happens that is)

Why would you "take his ill fated Chelsea stint out of things"?

It's just as relevant as his success at Porto.  I felt a bit sorry for he way he seemed to be treated at Chelsea, but ultimately his man management - the single most important trait in successful managers - was found wanting.

I've watched Modric live plenty of times and on the TV too. I have long held the view that he is the most over-rated player in the divison. He is a good player, don't get me wrong. But he isn't this world-beater, I just don't know where it comes from.

He often goes missing in games against big sides, especially away from home. Against poor sides or weak midfields, he can dominate. He doesn't score many and gets very few assists. Contrast that with the likes of Pirlo and Xavi, these players get lots of assists. And then he isn't particularly good defensively either. He recylces possession and moves the ball forwards well. IMO, that on its own ain't worth mega millions. We probably won't find a direct replacement for him, but I would sooner have Bale, Adebayor or VdV in the squad than Modric, because these players actualy provide tangible worth.

(And before anyone is tempted, don't give me some pseudo-intellectual balls about Match of the Day players).

I'm glad we didn't sell to Chelsea, just because it's Chelsea. But the £40m on offer was an incredible price, way over the top.

Berto if you'd read my post before, you'd have seen that it is my opinion that at Chelsea they have a different set-up to any other team, in that the chairman has a personal relationship with many of the senior players ( JT, Frankpard etc), and so he was undermined there. At no other team would this have happened.

As much as you'd like to forgive/forget his stint at the chavs it was an unmitigated disaster, at the end of which he had pissed off both the team and the management before committing professional suicide with the immature interviews he gave to speed up his dismissal.

He was a sidekick, as much Jose's protege as Igor was Dr Frankenstein's. His high profile owes more to the Russian paying the exorbitant release fee (although he was advised to appoint Hiddink) than anything he's achieved himself.

His record at Porto was played 51, won 45, drew 4, lost 2. That isn't down to exceptional management, that's down to a ridiculously dominant team in a Micky Mouse league. The Micky Mouse epithet applies equally to the Europey League.

AVB's appointment is a big risk and every opponent in the first few games are going to try to pile on the pressure because he has to come up with the goods immediately.

2009/10 3rd with 68 points
2008/2009 1st with 70 points.

last season 1st with 75 points.

His year in charge he did the treble and the only time in history porto have gone unbeaten. You can put it down to it being a 'Mickey mouse league', that is an opinion not a fact. The stats show the  team were far superior under his management.

There no doubting his time at chelsea was a disaster, and he is a risk to an extent, but he is a good risk to take, and we should be enthusiastic out this appointment, and not taking on a 'mr reliable' such as moyes.

And disagree that his profile was down to the fee...it was the nature of his career. He and Jose fell out when AVB decided to go it alone, as Jose knew he was integral. I know who's judgement i'd back out of Jose's and the AVB knockers.

Who knows what AVB will do at Spurs, to say he failed at Chelsea is nonsense, they were 5th and in both cups when he left. They finished 6th, who knows what would have happened in the cups.

Yep, its a massive risk, listening to some people on here he left Chelsea in 20th after a players revolt

ANDRE VILLAS-BOAS will lose nearly £11million when he is named Tottenham’s new manager next week.

The Portuguese coach, 34, did not receive a lump sum pay-off when he was fired by Chelsea last March just eight months into a three-year contract.

Instead, the Blues agreed to keep paying his £100,000-a-week salary until he got another job.

He has so far received three months of payments up to the start of July.

But if he takes the White Hart Lane post, Chelsea supremo Roman Abramovich will turn off the cash tap and AVB will miss out on another 25 months — worth £10.8m.

Either every word of that is a lie or the man is an egomaniac

I think that, over the years, The Sun have proven themselves as a reliable source of information.

It takes up the whole of their back page.

If it's not true then some sort of action should be taken against them.

He can't really afford to sit around for another 25mths after the Chelsea debacle, he has to get straight back on the bike and hope not to crash it again. Crazy

well exactly. he's not gonna sit around counting his money for 2 years before taking another job if he gets a good offer

I know he looks a shoe-in for the job but something still isn't sitting right with me; I'm expecting a twist in this saga

Assuming there's a smidgen of truth in that story why risk a guaranteed income when you've got a young family?

If he got sacked in October he'll lose something like a guaranteed £8m over the next 2 years.
Report Can't Catch Me • June 30, 2012 8:56 PM BST
Because he is confident in his own ability?

He must be worth a good few million already. I don't think it's surprising at all.
Report AllinR1 • July 1, 2012 10:25 AM BST
If the pay-off situation is true, then it pretty sums up what kind of a man AVB is. Instead of sulking and getting paid a fortune, go out there and prove you worth.

Sounds like a rare winners/fighters mentality.
Report blackburn1 • July 1, 2012 10:28 AM BST
Yes if this is true it's good news for Spurs, essentially he's taking a massive pay cut to join

As I say on the Spurs files he has to hit the ground running as even some Spurs fans want him to fail

^or if the geezer just sits around after what happened at chelsea,he knows his stock will fall even more and lets be honest he will probably earn a decent amount at WHL.

If I'm not mistaken, Blanc could not have spoken to Spurs before today, the day his contract expired. I don't think it is a coincidence that AVB hasn't been named yet and it has also been quoted that Levy intends to speak to several candidates before making a decision. Whilst I'm resigned to AVB coming there is nothing that has happened yet that has 'totally' convinced me it is actually true. He is the only one who has been confirmed as having an interview but if Blanc is/was in the frame then only from today could that happen... I'm still a layer/trader on the market, whilst praying AVB is not selected as I see him as no more than a gamble.

AvB could not be named before today because of the terms of the restrictive covenant in his contract with Chelsea.  Expect the announcement to happen today or Monday.

He's already a multi-millionaire. By all accounts, he lives and breathes football. If the right job (in his eyes) came up, I don't think he would worry about money from Chelsea. Spurs aren't exactly going to offer him £250 a week, I'm sure his kids future will be secure!
