I have never got carried away with our chances in any tournament after Italia 90. Most of the hype comes from our stupid press who think we can win everything, this time it seems our fans have wised up to it. Say things enough and people will believe it, Scotland were going to win the world cup in '78.

I think you are reading too much into it buses and allowing your anti-England bias to muddy the waters of what was actually said. Gerrard was quite right; Sweden aren't anywhere near as good a side as France - surely you don't dispute that? If you think that was disrespectful, then I presume you deplore the quotes attributed to Jonas Thern.
Most people would simply come to the conclusion that Gerrard felt that England were quite justified in being happy with a draw against a side like France but if we are to have any hope of progressing beyond the group stage, probably will need to beat either Sweden or Ukraine. Don't see much controversial about that. |

sweden arent sh!t ffs. had any ofthose frankly sitters fallen to ibra the other night he'd have buried them.
england might break their duck against sweden tomo but to come out with 'they arent france' comments is quite unbelieveable. |

im not anti england, i like england, i have the banter on here when they lose like the op of this thread and i dont take it personally but this is me making a serious point now. if u dont win tomo they will be excuses, wait and see.

It was a fair comment by Gerrard buses - France are one of the fancied sides,Sweden are not.
Was Keane wrong to say that Ireland had a hope against Spain? |
|
By:
i don't know anyone that makes excuse's when england lose i do the opposite, and slag them off, like at the world cup it was a disgrace. Rooney should not have started one game he was playing worse than robbie keane normally does
|

By:
its a fair comment in relation to france elviss but the way he said it he assumed they should win even tho theyve never beaten sweden ever. i didnt hear keane but its a football match, anything is possible as seen with 10 man chelsea v barca but but he was wrong to say ''lets face it theyre not france'' as if to say if we put in a similar performance we'll beat them. either way its not important now. gl tomorrow, should be a good match.

alwaysswiming2000,
probably over-reacting, but jokes about the famine in Ireland are not funny. They were real people who starved to death; and the truth of the matter (as Tony Blair acknowledged and apoligised for) was that there was NO endemic shortage of food in Ireland. ENGLAND was more dependent on the potato than Ireland. But thousands of soldiers were barracked in Ireland to guard food supplies of meat, fruit, wheat, dairy products etc which were to be taken out of the country to feed the British population and British armies in the field. It does explain residual Irish dislike or distrust of the English, but in general most try not to dwell on it and have a deep-rooted desire to have good relations with our neighbours (who sometimes have a slight resentment for us not wanting to be British - but why, we just aren't). |

Gerrard not the best with the media - wary/shy whatever - don't think the English are assuming anything tbf - been bitten 2 many times for that.
Tabloids and media in England are to blame for all the hype in previous tourneys - then when things go tits up all hell breaks loose. Realistic expectations this time around and Sweden game is 50/50ish imo but no bet for me. Good tournament so far - apart from the Russian hooligans! |

The Irish when they're drunk are as bad as any and if you're english the ignorance abounds, the tribalism is everywhere, Celtic jerseys?
Once were Man U or Liverpool fans growing up?, suddenly realised the political divisions between Celtic and Rangers because one of their neandarthal pals told them all about effing history, remember that word "HISTORY" because thats what it is "history", forget about it ffs, its history!!, yet their ignorance drove them to buy a tribalistic Celtic jersey, Man U and Liverpool now secondary to their tribalism?. Grow the **** up! |

@ HIGGY Your xenophobic comment regarding England reeks of ignorance and hate, Im guessing you have an almighty chip on your shoulder
![]() I have lived in Ireland for most of my life and the tribalism associated with GAA in Ireland is unlike anywhere else! And lets be honest, Ireland played crap (even the RTE pundits were embarrassed). |

..................................................................................... You say the Irish are welcome in "nearly" every country. What are the exceptions, and why? As for "Brits" being hated by everyone, try asking any of the populations liberated by British forces in 1944-45, in particular the poor wretches incarcerated in places like Belsen-Belsen. As it happens, I'm a Scot who favours separation, but comments like the above, born of ignorance and prejudice, do no justice to the truth. |

One of those sitters did fall to ibra and he headed it against the post and wide, the sort of chance he scores every week in Italy. We broke our duck against Sweden 6 months ago, beat them 1-0. Only a friendly but that has far more relevance than any of the competitive games, when the most recent was 6 years ago and most of the others were back in the 80s-90s. And why is saying they're not as good as France so "unbelievable". If you asked 100 people who was the better footballing nation, i'm pretty sure most (if not all) would say France |

I don,t think that many Irish fans travelled across to Poland.
Most of them were Poles going home for their holidays. |
