Rory Gallagher - excellent shout. Saw Rory and the boys about 30 times - unbeatable live. Other great bands from that era Grateful Dead, Little Feat, Doobie Bros.

America has produced some good bands, but none as great as any of these (in my opinion].

America does iconic solo artist better though, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Madonna etc. Britain only has David Bowie.

The doors were the best band for me.  They don't have a massive repertoire of songs but their quality of musicianship and creativity put them a level up, imo.

The list above seems pretty fair. But i would swap the top 2 just because of The Rolling Stones longevity. They still had a decent album in 1981 eighteen years after their 1st.

Three former Beatles had great solo careers as well. I know it's not the same as the Beatles, but it confirms their talent. That's what swings it towards the Beatles for me.

ive no problem with the beatles being top of any list, but i dont agree that 3 of them had great solo careers

if u mean great, in terms of success, you have a point. but they could have sold anything as solo artists just because they were Beatles

its a generally accepted point that their solo work was middling/mediocre, certainly compared to what they did as a group

Granted some of Paul's work was cheesy, but John's and George's solo work was critically acclaimed and both have some classics to their name. "Imagine" is number one on a lot of peoples 'best song of all time' lists and "My Sweet Lord" isn't far behind either.

When i was growing up there were no bands, it was all house music. Stone Roses took 5 years to make their second album and then Oasis came about. 5 lads from fook all to everything. It made it seem like anyone could achieve there dreams. 70 million records sold. Knebworth, frightening and i love them

i was a big Oasis fan too, back in the day. all my friends were into them, i preferred them to Blur who were their rivals at the time, but they sold way more records than Blur did

but the third album, which their was so much hype about, was a big disappointment. Noel admitted as much, said a while later that they were doing too much coke and the quality-control had gone

it was the last Oasis album i bought. i ve liked the odd single they put out since. they ll always have the first two albums which were very very good

Fair enough freddie, we all like who we like, no point arguing about it. I liked Be Here Now and to sunnafy how good Oasis were. The Masterplan which was a B Side album is better than 90% of other albums ever made and it was a collection of B Sides. How many average bands sell 70 million records duncan?

Wonder, why nobody mentioned Pearl Jam so far. They´re rocking for 21 years now and still selling out almost every show.

I think one reason Oasis seemed good was because as someone said prior to Oasis it was all mechanical House music. Real people writing songs and playing real instruments seemed quite a novelty and they were good at what they did but hardly revolutionary groundbreaking stuff that changed the history of rock and roll. Just another good band who came and went like so many.

Pretty much every other band mentioned on this thread is better than them, which isn't exactly difficult to achieve.

i dont think record sales mean alot as lets face it, most people are sheep. they follow bands and like their songs because their friends do and the radio plays it alot. the smaller percentage of people who have a personality see past this and like better bands. truth hurts

anyone who's only been watching bands since 1992 is hardly in a position to make a comment on a genre of music which has been around for about 60 years.
You cannot compare modern record sales and concert attendances
with those of the early days when bands didn't have the benefit of huge marketing and advertising budgets of the record companies and even hugely popular bands would only be playing in town halls and dance halls.
Mention of the Spice Girls is actually relevant here as an example of how with sufficient hype and publicity a modern band can be seen as far better and important than they really are.

I agree, i was only using that example as someone said Oasis were average. How can an average band break every record going. If you don't like Oasis fair enough. It would be boring if everyone liked the same music but average they are certainly not.

We used to have these who's the best conversations in the pub and it always got heated until we agreed that although fun they were utterly pointless as people just keep choosing  their favorites.It's human Nature to do so.

Its safe to say they are the greatest rock n roll band ever.

It has to be The Beatles, they crossed all boundaries, nationality, race, creed, age group. Every new generation are into The Beatles and it looks like it will never end - hundreds of years from now they will still be listening to Beatles music.
