well done to Crewe, Cheltenham will walk away with alot of regrets, hit the crossbar with a screamer, two amazing shots cleared off the line, muhammed who would find it easier to score than hit above the bar (twice) and a one on one with he keeper, hit straight at him

Overall Cheltenham have had the better chances, but havnt taken them, their own fault!

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Amazing day out yesterday, and the right result. Felt a bit sorry for Cheltenham as they gave it everything but made up for the players and team. I went to Plymouth away at the start of September and we were bottom of the league at that stage. To end the season 19 unbeaten and to win at Wembley with a team of Academy graduates is something really special.

It will be a few days until my voice comes back but for now I'm just grinning from ear to ear.

it's a shame tho isnt it that a growing team ..and a good one, will prob lose some of the best players to the 'bigger' clubs, so that promotion may turn out to be a waste of time if u lose them and then struggle in the higher division, if only u could keep them all and thered be a chance of back to back promotions.

course they should celebrate, its my admiration of this group of players which has prompted me to post, its more a seethe that the bigger clubs will ruin them

marychain - congratulations mate, you're a proper football supporter.

Tony broke - i don't think it's a case of the bigger clubs ruining them, clubs of Crewe's size need to sell to survive, it's what they rely on. Selling someone like Powell for 3-4m probably pays to keep their academy going for another couple of years which in turn could help them to churn out another bunch of first teamers.

Fair enough Tony, wouldnt it be great if there really was a chance that a team like Crewe, with a fantastic youth development programme could rise through the divisions....
Incidentally, since Crewe continually produce a wealth of talent through their youth programme and must operate on a very small percentage of the budget of even the smaller Permiership teams - why doesnt someone either copy the entire set up or poach all their staff?
in comparison with some of the transfer fees thrown around this would still be peanuts surely?
PS - I hope this never happens, but just tryiong to work out why the big $$ seems to ignore.

@watchit ha ha ha ha ha - very good, not a bitter Vale fan by any chance are we? Laugh

9 of the 11 that played were academy graduates, and none of them would even be there if it wasnt for Dario. He isnt even moderately well paid compared to most in football, and has done an amazing job. He could easily have got far more money with some of the offers he has turned down. He has stayed because he loves the club, for no other reason.

@Tony Broke, it's right that players will always move on, but that is the way of the world. The great thing is, now the academy is back in full swing even people like Nick Powell arent irreplaceable. We have Max Clayton and Shaun Miller, two more extremely highly rated academy graduates, waiting in the wings for a game. Clayton played with Powell in the England u-18s and from what we've seen so far could be at least as good. Miller scored 25 goals for us last season and in the first two months of this one before being injured and losing his place to Powell and AJ Leitch-Smith. Those two will do us proud in League 1, and the Powell cash will keep the academy going for a few years.

@fibonacci, Steve Holland, who was in charge of Crewe's academy for years before an unsuccessful spell as manager when Dario first stood down, is now assistant manager at Chelsea.
