I honestly can't see Martinez getting the job purely on fan reaction.  Even if he was their top choice they are going to have bold to give it to him now after the very negative reaction.

Liverpool owners cool their interest in André Villas-Boas

Former Chelsea manager not approached for interview
Louis van Gaal offered sporting director role

Andy Hunter

guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 23 May 2012

The prospect of André Villas-Boas becoming Liverpool manager has receded after the club's owners, who have offered Louis van Gaal the position of sporting director, cooled their interest in the 34-year-old.

Villas-Boas has been a frontrunner for the Anfield vacancy following Kenny Dalglish's sacking last Wednesday and hoped to hold formal talks with the principal owner, John W Henry, and the chairman, Tom Werner, as the Liverpool hierarchy settle on a shortlist for the post. The former Porto and Chelsea manager, however, has not been approached for an interview. While his candidacy cannot be discounted completely, he has seen his prospects diminish amid interest from Fenway Sports Group in Roberto Martínez, Brendan Rodgers and possibly the man they wish to oversee a new managerial structure at Liverpool, Van Gaal.

The Portuguese coach, who guided Porto to a league and Europa League double in his one season in charge before suffering an ill-fated spell at Chelsea, had made it known he was keen on Liverpool only to insist on Sunday that he was "still choosing the right project and that decision will take the necessary time". It has also been suggested that Villas-Boas knows a second failed stint in English football would cause irreparable damage to his career at the highest level, although his agent, Carlo Goncalves, has not ruled out a move to Anfield.

Roma have also approached Villas-Boas since he was sacked by Chelsea in March but are also keen on their former striker, now Catania coach, Vincenzo Montella. Goncalves said: "Liverpool and Roma? Well, what we are looking for is a [club with a] strong technical plan, that is solid and durable. Villas-Boas would like to return to coaching in these conditions, but if these conditions are not available, we would have no problems not working. I won't confirm or deny contacts with specific clubs. What we are interested in is a technical project, its outlook and a situation that has longevity."

Goncalves's words may fit with FSG's proposed vision for Liverpool but the new management structure envisaged at Anfield is still being put in place. Van Gaal has been offered a senior role at Anfield and, though he has not called time on his own managerial career and may ask to be considered as a potential replacement for Dalglish, is believed to be close to accepting the position of sporting director.

Martínez remains a candidate for the managerial vacancy and has held informal talks with Liverpool since they were granted permission to approach the Wigan Athletic manager last week. He has not met Henry and Werner in Boston for a formal interview and that process is unlikely to commence before the weekend. Martínez is on holiday in the Caribbean.

Another possibility for manager remains Rodgers, despite his public rejection of the offer of an interview last Friday. The Swansea City manager declined Liverpool's invitation on the basis he had no wish to be part of an extensive list that would then be whittled down, particularly as his work at the Liberty Stadium should be clear to FSG. Rodgers may be tempted if it was clear he was on Liverpool's shortlist and FSG are understood to be still interested in the 39-year-old.
Report dizzydavid1 May 23, 2012 10:46 PM BST
"What we are interested in is a technical project, its outlook and a situation that has longevity.".....what a load of old waffle. What he means is he wants to manage at a club which has enough money to give him a good chance of winning trophies, and he doesn't want to get sacked quickly again. AVB (and his agent) is such a pretentious tw@t.
Report Shaky May 23, 2012 11:18 PM BST
I wouldnt be surprised if the reason that they dont need AVB in for an interview is because they have already had him in for an interview.

Article for the Daily Mail from April, Whelan seems to have changed his tune since then!

Roberto Martinez is expected leave Wigan when his contract expires in the summer.

Owner Dave Whelan has already decided to freshen things up at the DW Stadium and has agreed with manager Martinez that they will not negotiate a new deal.

Martinez, who also played for the club for six years, has worked for Whelan since quitting Swansea in 2009 and survived relegation on the final day of last season.

He faces a similar struggle once again with only Wolves below them in the Premier League with six games to go.

Saturday's defeat to Chelsea was a first in five Premier League games but cracks are beginning to appear in the relationship between Martinez and Wigan and the owner was critical of his manager after last month's home loss to Swansea.

'That was our worst performance in four or five years,' Whelan told the BBC at the time.

'I will have a meeting with him on Monday morning and ask him some questions about the performance and his selection. We had three  quality players on the bench and I want to know why.'

Whelan: Martinez may reject Liverpool job

Friday, May 25, 2012 - 10:19 AM http://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan insists there is no sure-fire guarantee Roberto Martinez would take the Liverpool manager's job should it be offered to him.

The Latics chief revealed yesterday the Spaniard had taken a break from a family holiday in the Caribbean to meet top executives from Fenway Sports Group in Miami.

Martinez has always been one of the front-runners to succeed Kenny Dalglish, partly because of his chairman's habit of speaking so openly about developments.

There are still other candidates to consider as FSG were hopeful of drawing up a shortlist of up to five people to interview next week.

But even if Martinez is offered the job Whelan believes the new structure being implemented at Anfield, with a yet-to-be-appointed technical director overseeing general football matters, would not be appealing to the 38-year-old.

"A little bit will have to do with the attitude of the owners because I don't think they fully understand the game of football in England," he told Sky Sports.

"Roberto likes total control, from the youngsters at 16 to the first team.

"If he doesn't get that, I don't think he will take the job."

Whelan added on ESPN: "My information is that the new Liverpool manager will not be given full responsibility of the football department.

"The set-up on the football side goes well beyond the norm even with a director of football.

"There will be somebody else signing players and they might not necessarily be the choice of the manager.

"My advice to Roberto is to think very carefully about this, but Liverpool are a big club and I hope that they remain one of the big clubs.

"I've asked Roberto to make his mind up as soon as possible. If we have to lose him I will move very quickly to appoint a successor as I have ideas.

"Hopefully he will stay with us but we will wait and see.

"He has not said anything to me yet about what he plans to do but I have told him what I think about it, of course I have.

"I have told him it doesn't feel right what is happening at Liverpool, but its for him to make his own mind up.

"If it's yes to Liverpool I will accept it and get on with life. But if it's no I'll be delighted.

"I hope he will stay but I told him I need an answer in the next seven days."

Whelan expects to be fully compensated should Martinez turn out to be Liverpool's choice.

"He signed an extension to his contract so Liverpool would have to buy out his contract," he added.

"You are into £2m to £3m minimum. Whatever the contract is worth I am sure Liverpool would honour that and buy it out."

Martinez has been offered Liverpool job but faces more talks, claims Whelan
By Sportsmail Reporter

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan claims manager Roberto Martinez has been made an offer by managerless Liverpool but will await a further meeting before making his decision.
The Latics boss met with Liverpool's principal owner John Henry in Miami on Thursday to talk about the vacant Anfield job after interrupting a family holiday in the Caribbean.
It was expected Fenway Sports Group would speak to other candidates on a short-list in the coming days but Whelan suggested developments had progressed.
He did, however, say Martinez - who would be expected to work under a technical director - wanted to negotiate a greater degree of control of footballing issues.
'I think what he has said is, "Thank you for your offer but I only work under the following rules: I have to have complete control of football"', Whelan told Sky Sports News.
'That's normally the way in England, that's how we all work.
'I think they're considering his request and Roberto's considering their offer and they're going to talk again on Tuesday.
'Hopefully he stays with us but wherever he goes, he's 100 per cent dedicated to that football club.'
Liverpool have declined to comment on Whelan's claims but captain Steven Gerrard said that while he was unaware of any developments, Martinez would have his full support if appointed.

It was anticipated the process of finding a replacement for Kenny Dalglish would have picked up pace next week with Henry and chairman Tom Werner likely to travel to England.

Martinez remains the favourite with the bookmakers, although that could have something to do with the fact he is the only contender publicly confirmed as being in the running.
Former Porto and Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas appears to have dropped out of the reckoning but it has been reported the Reds have not ruled out a second approach for Swansea's Brendan Rodgers after he declined their initial invitation to open preliminary talks.
Whelan, who set his manager a deadline of June 5 to decide his future, said yesterday he was not convinced Martinez would take the Liverpool job because of the structure under which he would be expected to work.
Former Wigan and Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland believes the Spaniard would regret not seizing the opportunity should it arise.
'What he'll be thinking to himself is: "Will I get this opportunity again?"' said the 31-year-old, who had three seasons under Martinez at Wigan before agreeing a move to newly-promoted npower Championship side Sheffield Wednesday this week.
Kirkland added in the Wigan Evening Post: 'The Liverpool job is still one of the biggest in the world - and it doesn't get offered to you every day.
'It's a massive job and it will be a massive opportunity for somebody.
'Whether that will be Roberto remains to be seem.
'But my gut feeling is that he'll go - there's been too much speculation for far too long for something not to be happening.'
Martinez has failed to ignite the optimism of Liverpool fans, many of whom believe a more experienced manager should be tasked with getting the club back into the Champions League.
Former striker Peter Beardsley hopes the Spaniard, if appointed, will be able to win them over with his style of football.
However, the former England international believes FSG rushed into the decision to sack Dalglish after the club's eighth-placed finish this season.
'I think they panicked by getting rid of Dalglish,' Beardsley told talkSPORT.
'I think they should have given him another year and seen where it goes.
'But Roberto has done well at Swansea and Wigan, he's come through the system and his type of football will appeal to the Liverpool fans.'

Liverpool target Roberto Martínez to announce future on Tuesday

• Wigan Athletic manager has held talks with Liverpool
• Steven Gerrard pledges support to 38-year-old

guardian.co.uk, Sunday 27 May 2012 11.41 BST

Liverpool's hunt for a new manager could be over after it emerged that Roberto Martínez was set to announce his future plans on Tuesday.

Wigan will hold a press conference this week in which Martínez is expected to announce whether or not he will stay at the club.

The 38-year-old met Liverpool's owners in Miami on Thursday to discuss the managerial vacancy and was not put off by the huge challenge that would face any new manager.

However, it is understood Martínez has not made up his mind completely whether to accept that challenge and has given himself until Tuesday to do so.

The Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan claimed on Friday the Spaniard had received an offer from Liverpool's principal owner John Henry after their meeting in Miami on Thursday.

Doubts emerged over Whelan's interpretation of the situation, with Liverpool refusing to comment amid the general belief no formal offer had been made.

Martínez's appointment would doubtless divide opinion among Liverpool supporters, some of whom may have been expecting a bigger name to be recruited to replace the sacked Kenny Dalglish.

But the captain Steven Gerrard, on England duty, has already pledged his full support to Martínez should he get the job.

"We'll have to wait and see," said the midfielder. "I'm aware Roberto Martínez has been talking to the club but all I've heard about him is positive. If he is going to be the manager, he's got my full support."

Throughout the process, Whelan has insisted it was not a foregone conclusion he would lose his manager to the club's north west rivals, claiming there were still some issues – mainly surrounding working under a technical director – to be overcome before Martínez would even be in a position to accept.

"He went to Miami and had a very constructive meeting with the owner of Liverpool," the Wigan chairman told Sky Sports News.

"They're going to talk again on Tuesday. They've made Roberto an offer and he has agreed to consider it.

"He's said, 'What are my responsibilities?' These are American owners and the rules and regulations are a bit different from what we English set down.

"Roberto is a seven-days-a-week, 12-hours-a-day worker and I don't know whether they realise how hard he works.

"He has rules and regulations to be fully in charge of football and I know he won't move anywhere unless he is fully in charge of the football.

"I think he'll give it fair consideration. Hopefully, he stays with us but, wherever he goes, he's 100% dedicated to that football club."
