Crewe won the first leg 1-0 and were fairly comfortable. Southend are claiming to have a large number of injuries for the game and have supposedly put most of their reserves on standby. Crewe are still without captain David Artell (metatarsal) and their best two players (Luke Murphy and Nick Powell) will have late fitness tests, but both are expected to play.

Its worth noting that away goals do NOT count until after extra time. So if the score is Southend 2 Crewe 1 after 90 minutes we will see extra time, but if there are no further goals Crewe would progress after 120 minutes tonight.

Anyone that saw the first game will remember it was a tight affair, with Crewe having the majority of chances, but without having very many clear-cut opportunities. That Southend have to attack will open the game up tonight, and I also suspect it may play right into Crewe's hands.

Crewe are unbeaten in 17 games and only have to make it 18 games to be on the way to Wembley. They will be confident of doing that, but I think there is every chance they could seal the tie in style with a win, and I have backed Crewe at an average price a little over 4.7.

More speculative punters may wish to join me in a FGS bet on Matt Tootle, 50/1 each way with Paddy Power (first 5 goals). Tootle is a right back by trade, and has layed primarily in a defensive role this year and has not scored. However, in the first leg manager Steve Davis employed him in a left-sided midfield role, and this enabled him to get well forward. Twice he was an inch away from getting on the end of a cross in the six yard box and I think he is well overpriced this evening.

marychain i have no doubt that crewe are the better more attractive footballing side but i really do fear for you tonite

luggy (sturrock) picked us up from the bottom of league 2 and achieved successive promotions with a small budget and you could never put your finger on it why his teams just won game after game when on paper they were no better than the opposition - he secured promotions at st johnstone sheff wed and swindon & although for various reasons it didnt work out in the CCC, tonites game will suit luggy to a tee - & i would take the saafend injury rumour with a pinch of salt - typical luggy - the fans expect them all to play

crewes unbeaten run is up against united's last 4 homes winning all scoring 11 and conceding 0

having said all that i cant see much value or many trading opportunities - ive had bits on 3-0 (22/23) and 3-3 (95)

marychain you going tonite ? if so bring a coat i was there at the weekend and it was bleddy freeeeezing

could be wrong but I thought away goals dont count at all in play-offs? (even after extra time)

just a thought Id welcome any comments, theres not a huge amount separating the 4 play off side, now tomorrow cheltenham can afford to lose the game by 1-0 2-1 etc whereas crewe have got to avoid defeat tonite to go thru in 90 mins - so why are the shrimpers 1.92 whist the gulls are 2.1 tomorrow ? the odds seem all at sea - haha

As noted by tommycockles completely wrong.
No away goals rule, it will be penalties if agg score is level after 120 minutes.

As a Southend fan, I would agree with the above on Plymouth (Peter Gilbert and Blair Sturrock will probably draw similar conclusions on too).  I'm trying to put my finger on how we're the division's top scorers when I've barely seen enough shots to score the goals we've scored in the games I've seen.  That said, I've not seen us lose at home this season or last against pretty good opposition.

I'm surprised that it looked like a comfortable win at home for Crewe to a neutral.  Sad to say it but our playing style is a lot like Stoke at the moment and we even got a bit of long throw threat going on in the away game.  Crewe started brightly but were nowhere near as good as I was expecting and I've gone from being pretty down on our prospects before to quite upbeat after a defeat.

IMO, to qualify market tends to underestimate home advantage in extra time and penalties but I think our Match Odds is a bit short so maybe not quite there.

The main thing I would say if you're trying to split the teams tactically is that if you don't understand phases of attack in the way teams play, I think you're going to struggle.  Southend aren't a team who camp men around the box much when they attack.  We hit the channels well and frequently deploy a centre back as a target man.  Most attacks happen long before the team get out of defensive positions.  I suspect we'll play 4-4-2 at home instead of the 4-3-3 variant we played away and to be honest that only seems to have been Sturrock's away tactic of choice recently to try and shore up our away defensive record a bit.  This will give us more to aim for and if Eastwood starts the movement and awareness will improve up front

Finally, if you bet in play, I suspect Crewe will try and press us at Roots Hall and if the tie is in the balance, I expect we will finish stronger.

Good luck

You are quite right about the away goals. Rule does not apply at all. Got some duff information off the fans forum. Still, my point was that away goals wasn't going to be a factor.

Green army, I respect Southend tonight but I go there confident. I fully suspect Southend's injuries to 'clear up' that was why I said they "claimed" they had injuries.

I also respect Southend's form, although none of the teams they have beaten recently have been upto much. Momentum I with Crewe, a few months ago Southend we're top and Crewe were languishing in 18th. That they have finished so close together highlights the differing second halves of the season the two clubs have had.

I have never seen a Crewe team with as much fight as this one and whilst I think Southend are a good side, we haven't been beaten in 17 matches, and now Southend have to beat us by more than one. If they do then they deserve to go to Wembley, but I think the game will suit our counterattack ing style.

hey coinflip hows blair doing ? hes not without talent but im not sure he would be playing league footie if it wasnt for his old man, his goalscoring record is hardly inspiring

is cougho a big influence ? - he was a giant of a player and pretty shrewd too

and marychain i want crewe to win, saafends my nearest ground for next season, its just that luggy knows how to come thru a task like this like no other lower league manager and he has succeeded on every previous occasion

Hey, I backed you guys to win the league and would say your end position has been an underachievement but just pointing out that you were playing pretty well when you came to Roots Hall and got beaten.  Indeed, you'd taken 7 points from 9 when we beat you at Gresty Road too.  And we've scored (correction) the second most in the league and kept 6 clean sheets in our last 8 games including the playoff game.  The away leg was a tough game for us and decided by a goal which came off our defender either before or after your guy headed it.

For all these reasons, I genuinely think that this side of the draw has the best two teams and the winner of this should be big favourite in the final.  Either way, I'm going to be down there cheering us on and genuinely expecting quite an intriguing playoff tie.  Last time in the playoffs we got Northampton who we'd already beaten 4 times that season so it was obviously a foregone conclusion.

Given all of our financial problems last season, I'm not even sure promotion is necessarily the best thing for us but then 4 up, 4 down means there's not a great deal between League One and League Two as we showed last time we went up to it and down from it.

I think it's fair to say that the fewer games Blair plays, the better the team's doing on the pitch.  I think he really doesn't excel in any area other than determination and this probably earns him goals at League Two.  Would probably say the same of Gilbert.  That said, if Barry Corr (top scorer last season) had been able to take any real part this season, Blair would be about 4th or 5th choice depending on formation.

Coughlan was mainly injured last year but for someone who could hardly run, he seemed to calm the defence down and I suspect he might have had some influence in turning Prosser from an error-strewn wreck in to an ok option in defence.

In the six years since we got promoted through the playoffs as 4th placed team, only one 4th place team has won the playoffs. Devil
